I think the saddest scene is when Jose near the end of the movie in his old age picks up that small picture frame of Chucho. More time had passed since he died than compared to how many years Chucho actually lived. So Chucho basically represents a literal lifetime ago while everyone else grew up but Jose cannot forget

I've watched this move over 100 times!!!! One of my all time favorites. This really depicts the way Mexican families live. I, myself have a very large family and we have a little bit of everything but always at the end we love each other and accept one another despite our choices. As we get older, everyone is going their way, making a life and as happy as I am for my family's happiness it's sad that we are not as close as we use to be. But when we get together all the memories we made brings me so much joy. Through the good, the bad, the ups and down... I will always love MY FAMILY 🤗❤🇲🇽

Seeing that part made me want to cry because I just hate HATE how many of us chicanos don't appreciate the struggle our parents, grandparents, etc. have done for us. Pachucos were not cholos, they were portrayed as gangbangers by cops and white America in the 40s and 50s. they were the sons of Mexican Americans who went to fight in WWII. They didn't fit in Culturally and obviously white people their age (like 13yr old to early 20s) didn't want anything to do with them because of racism. They created something that was their own. Now what this turned into is a different story. And another thing...for those saying that they are not Chicanos, that they are Mexican and American I have news for you, you are a Chicano! If you were born in the United States and have parents that were born in Mexico your are Chicano. If you were born in Mexico but grew up in the United States you are also Chicano. Being Chicano is not a bad thing. But more than anything being Chicano is who you are mentally, it's your Ideology. And here is a fun fact. for you just incase you didn't know... The Aztecs called themselves "Mechicas" they were "Mechicanos". The Spanish changed it to "Mexicas" and called them "Mexicanos" and or "Mexican" That's how it evolved over time. Chicano is literally short for "Mechicanos" so we should all be proud Being Chicano doesn't separate you from from any other Mexican. Everyone should stop saying "real mexican". That's what cause separation among La Raza!
@Timelordwinterandsun8 жыл бұрын
They went to war during WWII and won the most awards during the war! Every single person that served during WWII are heroes but we fucking went to work. Look up all the awards Mexican Americans had during the war it will bring a smile to your face so proud of those men for doing all that they did.

+Uly DiazYou hit it exactly right I wrote a response but didnt add the meaning of Chicano the root of our blood is native as in Indian here is my response........... Not everything is black and white life has lot's of gray area many variables, that was a different time racism was not as protested no cell phone videos and the cops were ready to kill at will this story is part of our struggle my family went through it and many others have identical stories my family was here already we didnt cross the borders they crossed us. Many families in Los Angeles of Mexican decent were in the southwest and Ca. before it was part of the U.S. Arizona wasnt a state until 1912 and my great grandma was born in morenci Az. a mining town but was considered Mexican like her Mother and Father. She married and ended up in Boyle Heights where my Grandma and siblings were born.The kids back then were as american now as anyone else so how can we blame or judge how we have just as much right to integrate, my family has fought in both world wars Korea, Vietnam, and these new wars were a family of veterans and we still practice our culture but remember the word Mexican is a nationality so that is where the word Chicano came from we werent Mexican enough to Mexicans and not American enough for Americans so the right to self determination was born. Is it easier to understand that not everyones story is the same and nothing is black and white and life is very complicated that is why our best angle is always empathy and thoughts of understanding rather than thinking only one way applies to all. I also have Apache and Zuni blood so as an Indian my ancestors have been here for thousands of years. Show less

I can still remember my jefesito working in the yard tending to his plants .when I got out of prison he was cutting his tomatoes and we had a long conversation. that is when he convinced me to take care of my children and I did.you can really say that this movie was similar to my family's life.

Everyone has a story to tell, but I feel exactly like you do, got the exact thing that went on with my family but it was my grandparents that came from Mexico, father was smart but never in my life, grew up without him, funny thing I'm buying a home and have him living with me, took him off the streets. Trying to raise my 3 kids and I've been with the same girl since I was 13. He still tries to tell me what to do, often getting crazy with me. I'm like,"no dad, just shut the fuck up and let me be", I hate the way he is, but I love him, always will. I know I shouldn't be that way and I should respect him , but,it's so hard. He's been here 9 years, can't be around him 30 min without arguing. He don't care about what I do, sees life differently and puts my kids down so much they don't want to go play on the back yard where he stays. He stays in a storage room, gots electricity, refrigerator, AC, but still an ass, don't know what to do, what to say. The worst I've done to him was tell him,"my whole life, I knew I never wanted to be like you, I wanted to be the exact opposite of you, raise a family". He put me down on that to and told me I don't know how to raise a family. Then walked in when I started yelling at him, told him, "you never raised one so how would you know,"didn't have a come back and slammed the door. I forgive him every time, it's gotten so bad he tries to fight me, I'll never put my hands on my father but I will cuss his ass out and scare him, lol,I do love that man, just tired of his actions

@sungods-fh1xu2 жыл бұрын
Chucho in this scene actually said something true. In the US, money is what gets you respect, unfortunately, not dignity. Of course he meant this on financial terms and getting around society. If people see you working in landscape, they automatically associate it with low income illegal immigrants or just people that couldn’t get a degree in college or something, yet they don’t realize or remember that lawn mowing business, specially if run it yourself, can actually make you a good decent profit, but of course it’s hard work. But towards the end, he also said another true thing, and that is that it doesn’t matter how you get it, as long as you get it. Literally you can make 300$ in one day cutting lawn or more, yet you can also make the same selling illegal substances/drugs and walk into a nice restaurant with the same money and no one will ask you how you got the money that you’re about to use to pay the check, they’ll be just happy you came in and dropped money in their business. Basically Chucho made his choice to get his money illegally vs getting it by working hard.

With so many new fans loving this movie, here's a bit of movie trivia: Gregory Nava directed both Mi Familia (1995) and Selena (1996). Actors in both movies include: Jennifer Lopez who played "Young Maria" and "Selena", Jacob Vargas played "Young Jose" and "A.B. Quintanilla (Selena's Brother), Constance Marie played "Toni" and "Marcela Quintanilla" (Selena's Mother), Edward James Olmos played "Paco" and "Abraham Quintanilla" (Selena's Father), and the late Lupe Ontiveros played "Irene" and "Yolanda Saldivar." On a personal note, when I was 12, my mother took me to the Selena movie auditions in San Antonio, TX. I will never forget Director Gregory Nava introducing himself to the group of young girls auditioning and just thanking us for coming all the way out for the event and to just have fun that day

The scene where the 'white' family went to meet the Mexican one is very good. They went there quite willing to make friends with the Mexicans. After all, their daughter was already with a Mexican. They did not judge the family because Carlitos had been in prison. They were happy to try the Mexican food. OK, they were horrified with the naked boy. But the only one who insulted and was hostile to the Mexican family was Memo himself.
