Yes they do but they are a product of their environment so its not completely their fault. i grew up around this. you know how messed up it is that when i was in 6th grade i was already accepting death? i knew dying was a real possibility every day when i was walking home from school walking through these neighborhoods. My there was a shooting in my school bus twice during my time in high school and so much more. Its much easier said than done when you're actually in the situation and not just looking from outside. Alot of things cause you to live this lifestyle. I do however agree with you because like i said i grew up around this and i made it out. From a young age i knew the only way out i saw was with education so i did very good in school and instead of being outside i spent all day studying and it paid off because i got a full ride to the University of Miami. we choose where we go in life but you have to understand that when you grow up and its all you see and know it becomes very easy to get trapped in this lifestyle.

What a great film! I grew up in East Oakland and saw how the streets attempted to take my older sister from my parents. They almost lost her to gang life and violence. After seeing how easy it was to hang around the wrong people and the possible outcomes, I decided to focus on the opposite of gang life: books, nerdy friends, band class ( I play the viola), alternative rock, and boys lol. I stayed away from any "friends" that would show slight gang-life behavior. We left The Town when I was 17 years old and it was the best decision my parents made for us kids.

I grew up in Florence and Compton in the mid 80s the scene in 0:44 It’s on Soto and Caesar Chavez. This short film is beyond the truth of what happens to lower class families. My father worked in a factory and got deported when I was in elementary school and my mother had to work all day so she could feed me and my little sister, usually coming home at 11pm. This film shows that even though it has been 30 years, nothing has changed. We raise children to later see them either in jail, in the hospital, or in a cemetery. That’s “la vida loca”. Every young person seeing this film I want to say that, choose the best option in your life, go to college even if it means going to a community college. Us as parents always want us to see their children have better lives as them so we dedicate our entire lives for them. So when a child dies before there Mom or Dad....nothing can describe that pain.

No shame in going to a Community College. First two years at a Community College is the same as the first two years at a State or UC or Private. Same qualified Professors and same nonsense opinions expressed about their own political views vice sticking to facts and just teaching. Keep on the straight and narrow.

I grew up at Bell Gardens & Commerce - city limits border. We always had an avocado tree where we lived in our backyard, played touch football in the street. We all got along, our music was a variety of Malo, Tierra & El Chicano, to Supertramp, Kansas, and Stevie Wonder, we lived on Agra Street, a cul de sac, off of Specht Avenue, next to the LA Riverbed & the Railroad tracks. But they ran us off. The organized Crime, card clubs, drugs, prostitution, vice in general... I got out of there for good in 1984, moved to San Fernando Valley for awhile. Then left S. Cali for good. I live in Rincón, Puerto Rico now... They destroyed S.E Los Angeles back then, between the PCP, malathion fruit fly spray, heinous crimes that go unreported. Because the system is so wicked. U.S is all about corruption. The banks always flipping out populations, to start the heist all over again. Most of my friends and family left for Mexico by late 1980's. They told me, if I could, to get out of the United States, they're shutting it down!!...

If you think about it, Alejandro and Ignacio were friends when they were kids. The scene where Juan is looking at Ignacio’s wallet and was prevented by Ignacio from taking out and looking at a second picture, show’s that Ignacio was hiding a secret. The fact that the second picture was behind the picture where Ignacio is with his younger brother Juan, a picture he cherishes, demonstrates that the second picture holds deep meaning to Ignacio. In my opinion, that picture we never see is a picture of Ignacio and Alejandro back when they were young friends, or “hermanos”. That’s why, at the end Alejandro tell’s Ignacio “we ain’t kids no more”. In my opinion, this short film is not based on Juan and Mateo, but in the hidden tragic story between Alejandro and Ignacio.

This film really hit me hard. I grew up in a neighborhood like that and it was so hard for most boys (some girls) to make it out alive. We played in a soccer team..one of our team members (12 year old) brother (20) was in a gang. Somehow he was in a shootout and another gang member got killed. Family left and moved to another city. 6 months later our friend (12 year old) got killed..stabbed 300 times in broad daylight. Also I lived in front of a HS. Shootings and fights every day after 7th period. Another episode...this one involved a white kid (16 years)- our goalie. He impregnated a 14 year old. He didn't want anything to do with the baby. She went and told everyone in school that he was the father. Knucklehead killed her and cut her to pieces and stuffed her in a suitcase. Middle school. We were walking from school to home and a car approaches us and one of the gang members pulled a shotgun and pointed at us..3 ft away. Another one...black kid beat up this Mexican (real Mexican not Chicano) kid (12 years). Mexican kid comes the next day with a gun and makes that black kid kneel and put the gun in the kids mouth. Late 80s..early 90s. Dallas TX. East Side Locos, AV Boys, Bloods and Crips, PGV..etc..etc... it's like a movie but living it in real time. No this are not lies.

Professional quality videography. Great story! As a person who was in the drug movement of the 1960s, I can relate to how natural the path is into negativity and destruction. Mine was a 64 Impala, but I loved seeing the 63s. I am now 74 years old. I became a Christian when I was 21. I thought this film would have been best if it ended with a clear message about the Lord Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of sins, and the new life He provides in His grace. Family, community, friendship, empathy for those who are suffering in this sin-filled world -- that is what God provides in His grace and mercy! Let's make a film that ends with the good news in Jesus! His grace is sufficient! God is working in our prisons and in the neighborhoods. Prison Fellowship, Kairos, and other programs are providing the forgiveness of sins, skills for dealing with the problems of life, new life, and hope for a better future in this world and the world to come!

@@freddygaulman5493 i agree but the thing they were just trying to show was that people that got nothing to do with the beef get caught in the middle. what i see as fake is that dudes just rolled away knowing their enemigas were right there. for them to bounce showed they were backing down. any real vato from a varrio wouldn't have reversed and drove away. come on now. also, if you're going to make the story about neighborhood beefs, why the fuck are you going to show nothing but shit hit up on the walls by nothing but taggers? the short story was not well made. no disrespect but it had me lost as to direction of the film.

The ending had me crying. Even gang members were once precious kids and were pure and innocent, only to be corrupted by Satan and what the elites shove in their faces on tv and the internet. Not to mention what they see growing up.

"If you live by the gun, you will die by the gun." I always thought it was interesting to watch and observe the Latino gangs, but at the same time I know that lifestyle is not worth living. You want to live a healthy life, don't ever join a gang. You put your's and your whole family's life in danger. Honestly, I would love to have a 60's impala though. This was real nice to watch, thought it was a documentary at first.
