足袋 (Tabi, pronounced ‘tah’ like “UTAH” and ‘be’ like “BE yourself” in case anyone cares 😂) socks and shoes are part of my culture (though modern takes on them are funkier and newer and young Japanese designers are pushing boundaries and having fun!), so it’s not really a “trend” in my mind. Tabi socks and shoes in certain styles will continue to exist even if westerners stop being interested in them. Maybe in the western world they’re a trend, I can definitely understand that perspective since it’s not common and there’s no cultural context! It’s interesting to me, though, when something that’s cultural and traditional and not meant to be silly or weird or anything is “trend-ified”. Fun video as always!

I felt like your discussion in the video was hinting clearly about exploring other cultural perspectives and that’s part of what pushed you to liking them more, which is so truly lovely! It’s totally fine for ANYONE to not like a style, like, not all Japanese people wear tabi 😂! I meant in a broader scope, I’m sure I’ve gotten into something I saw as a “trend” when it was taken from someone’s actual culture. America has that problem with LGBTQ+ and black culture in particular, from what I understand, and it’s such a complicated and nuanced subject. I love to learn about it, and expand my own horizons even if I don’t like a particular clothing piece. I love how you’re always learning and sharing your journey with fashion, it cannot be easy to put yourself out there and I’m sorry someone yelled at you for not knowing what tabi are! 🙌💕 We’re all learning here!

I had no idea the tabi shoes were related to the traditional Japanese footwear, despite knowing about the latter. I saw them and immediately thought animal hoof. I guess I’m just used to thinking of geta sandals and the tabi socks being separate entities, and not a single silhouette

@@khazz33 Jikatabi are a traditional workwear boot thing that many construction workers and people still wear today! It’s super fun to see construction in Japan 😆 The hip, heeled tabi shoes that are now a popular “trend” shoe I don’t think have a long history, but I love people taking tradition and changing it up to bring a fresh spin and to interest younger generations and other countries. 💕🙌 Alexa had no way of knowing about this specific shoe and history when she first talked about it in that other video a while ago (nor should anyone expect people to know about far away cultures and their funky shoes 🤣), but I’m so glad she mentioned that she had learned more in this one just to shed some light on it 💕

Anyone who’s been to the bins sees the amount of clothes that gets thrown away. It’s pretty much the last stop for these items and resellers make it possible for someone like me to buy that vintage leather jacket for $40-50 instead of buying a brand new one for $200+. It’s also sustainable

That’s great, resellers are definitely a great way of getting second hand stuff for a lower price and at least it’s sustainable. It’s only annoying when they price items way above their original value or just way above what the item is worth especially second hand.

I feel the same about the body type thing as I do the color season stuff! Like I understand it completely from a color theory and aesthetic purpose, but people will literally be like. “Oh I love this color but its not in my season so I cant wear it.” LIKE NO please!!! Wear the colors you like! Dont let these rules dictate your style!

I really got into body types and color analysis probably about 10 years ago. It was super helpful to learn the language of clothing and color but I never pay attention to the "rules" anymore.

I like to use body typing and color theory as guides, not really as strict rules. However, I do find myself sticking to what is best for my own types anyways because everything outside of that just never looks or feels quite as good, even if I like the color or style lol

100%. I'm most likely an autumn and I gravitate to those colours because I like them anyway, so knowing they look good on me is even better. But I also wear a lot of black, which apparently is "too harsh" for all but one season, which I find ridiculous. It's black ffs, it will suit everyone lmao

Re: Midi skirts - I used to hate them too! Until I started wearing them with knee high boots. Total game changer. I wear mine with my UNIF trinity boots and it is the grunge dream I always needed.

I really appreciate you talking about resellers. I’m a reseller and it breaks my heart to see what people say on the internet about what I do. I would NEVER do anything that I believed was taking something away from someone else. I go to thrift stores that have so much stuff that they don’t know what to do with, they have half off sales the entire store multiple times a week. I am also very selective with what I pick up. I focus a lot on lingerie and vintage night gowns and that section where I live never gets touched, but people love it on Depop. I also make sure to sell everything at a very affordable price for everyone because I do this FOR people to be able to shop second hand and sustainably easier. So just thanks for saying something ❤️

Tbh it breaks my heart too lol I’ve literally been thrifting for over 10 years and there’s no winning 😂 I remember when I got all my clothes from the thrift store and thrifting wasn’t popular back then and I felt a little ashamed (ik I shouldn’t have lol) and then it became popular and I was so excited to talk about my thrift finds with so many new people but then we got hate again for reselling (I’ve been reselling for awhile as well) and it makes me so sad because one of my favorite places to thrift is the rag house and I just hate over consumption. Like why buy things from the store when you can most likely find it secondhand and you CAN ONLY find it secondhand because of resellers 👏🏽 PLUS most resellers are basically giving you an amazing deal rather than spending full price on an item at a fast fashion store.

To me, the obvious problem with the dress-for-your-body-type rules is that they suggest a pretty strict dichotomy between desirable and undesirable shapes and curves, and consequently teaches you to hide what is "not beautiful". They reinforce a narrow standard of beauty, where only long legs and a small waist etc are beautiful, and any other shapes should be hidden or manipulated.

I live in Pennsylvania, and I recently visited my sister in Seattle. She took me to her local Goodwill, and the prices were obscene for a thrift store. I usually go to thrift to find hidden gems for cheap. Not pay a brand new price for something that is used and may not be exactly what I want. Needless to say, the culture shock was interesting.

I’m 5’1 and my legs makes most of my height! So a midi is still long but not enough as a maxi; all in all i just avoid any long skirts just because i love my legs 😂😂

For people looking for fun sustainable brands: Big Bud Press, Lucy and Yak and Nooworks are all slow(er) fashion companies that make clothes in really fun colors and prints! Nooworks in particular leans into a very maximalist funky style and I'd recommend checking them out if anyone is looking for fun unique ethical pieces.

I try to encourage ppl being mad at resellers to look up the term "fashion waste colonialism", and the life cycles of fast fashion clothes and where they end up. about 15 million used clothes arrive at Ghana's Kantamanto Market every WEEK. i mean, like, a week days ago there was an article about how the pile of fast fashion in the atacama desert in chile is now visible from SPACE. (those are largely unsold, but still) i just feel like if you know about these things you can't be angry at some 20-year old reselling clothes for a profit anymore, because they're lessening the amount of stuff from being exported and eventually going to the landfill (also sorry about writing essays in your commentsl lol, i just feel kinds strongly about these things)

I completely agree. I resell things because they don’t fit or don’t work out and I obviously can’t return them to Poshmark on Mercari or Depop! And also I may just have that very special thing from the 80s or 90s that somebody has been looking for for a really long time or lost in childhood. I know myself I found nostalgic things that I used to wear back in the day and I’m so happy somebody has rescued it!! I think reselling is amazing I purchase as much or more than I sell!!

The problem I have with reselling is that the prices aren't affordable to everyone, most of the prices are only accessible to middle class and up. At least where I live in New Zealand, most of the prices of items sold by resellers are very similar to prices of retail. I'm really sick of hearing that buying clothes from resellers is an "affordable option", because of the prices it excludes a lot of people including myself. I buy from Op Shops and other second hand stores because I can't afford retail or prices similar. I'm not trying to bash anyone, just wanna share my two cents and experiences.

Love the reseller take as a reseller. A thrift store I’ve frequented literally pulls every clothing item once it’s been out on the floor for three weeks to be thrown out. I was so tired of literally so many excellent condition plus size items and NWT things being thrown out. I mean nice name brands in excellent condition being thrown out because no one in a size 22 came in that month and liked that item. Most of the thrift stores I shop at are in poor areas that support very needed local charities that need resellers to not only fund their mission but also pay their employees. I once had a director tell a group of people I don’t care if you light the clothes on fire when you get home we need funds to help people stay warm and fed this winter.

As a reseller on Depop, I take pride in my lil store. I resell item I have worn and love, and some items are donated to me by friends. My goal is to give to charity. I also price things super low, because I care about the planet and people, I’m not there to be rich. I have a job 😅. I hope people consider buying and selling . ❤

I agree with you on your point of midi length, but someone like one who goes to college, there's dust and mud on the roads so midi is more practical. Maxi skirts take a bit more effort but I love a swoosh ❤ also, during summers, its difficult to wear platform shoes or boots

I totally agree with you about the sustainable brands aspects. A lot of sustainable brands are too basic and I can't justify spending a lot of money on clothes that I don't think are cute. I also get most of my day to day fashion inspiration from Instagram rather than Pintrest. Following creators there feels more personal and they talk a lot about their personal style journey in videos and posts. Pintrest I feel like is mostly photos and I used it mainly for historical fashion Inspiration.

I love midi but I’m only 5ft 2 so they’re usually to my ankle 😂 I do wonder if retailers have continued this trend because of supply and demand. I reckon they sell a lot more midi because both tall and short women can wear them, whereas a true maxi unless they come in petite aren’t suitable for us shorties

Yes!! I'm not short (I'm 5'7), but maxi length is juuust too long so that I trip over it and would have to hem it. And mini length is sometimes juuust too short so I can't bend without showing my ass. Midi is the perfect every-day length for a lot of different heights.

Tunnel Vision does sustainable clothing in terms of using ethical labor, and they only make a batch of 100 pieces per design at first, xxs-5x, and they do have swimsuits. Although their stuff is mostly alt leaning, they do have some cutesy items too. They are more expensive because of their ethics and standards for their workers and materials.

Thank you for reminding people that there's nuance to reselling! The amount of fashion pollution and waste in our society is nearly incomprehensible but instead of condemning the major corporations that throw clothes into landfills or realizing that Goodwill (for example) does their price mark-ups for their own profit and even holds luxury goods auctions online...for even more extensive profit!...people find it way easier to point their finger at the person who digs through unwanted clothes just to make ends meet every month 🙃 Why is it strictly the little man's fault? Just because the people who talk the loudest about resellers being scum have to use the least brainpower to form an argument against them lol. Go after Goodwill next time for the price hikes. They certainly don't care about their community.

Thank you for standing up for resellers - I'm a reseller (a nice one I promise!) and because of my health this is unfortunately my only income right now. I think people get confused about the pricing - when it comes to in-person thrift prices & online prices, the latter are higher because the items are available to anyone in the world whereas in-person thrift stores have a smaller local audience and it would be ridiculous to (for example) charge $150 for those cowboy boots. Online you are paying for the luxury of shopping anywhere in the world and getting exactly what you're looking for. At least that's how I see it! I see no problem finding a pair of cowboy boots for $5 in my small town and reselling for $150 to someone in NY who's been looking for those exact boots and can afford it. With the fees we're charged on reselling apps, we need to have extra profit margins to succeed in this business. I also see how quickly things come and go in the thrift stores - they have SO MUCH inventory that I truly believe there's enough for everyone and we're not taking clothes from people who need them at those lower prices. The midi length is so useful for anyone with an office job. It's so hard to look trendy or feel like you dress 'like yourself' or in any interesting way at work. I wish more trends were job-friendly. I know tons of people work from home or somehow wear crop tops, jeans, sandals etc to casual offices...but a LOT of us still can't get away with that kind of stuff 9-5.

Body typing can be a great tool to learn the foundational aspects of dressing, so you can understand how to break the rules in a more intelligent way and create more interesting outfits imo. I also found color analysis to be a very sustainable move. I don’t follow it religiously, but it has allowed me to be more intentional w my purchases + it makes mixing & matching clothes (thus increasing my cost per wear) sooo much more easier.

Agree on the sad beige sustainable brands. A basic black or white t-shirt has been done enough times already, it's one of the easiest things to thrift for (even as a plus size person), I don't need to buy it new for 80€. Also, there's a lot of bold colours and prints that stand the test of time and aren't microtrends. I hate that timeless fashion often seems to mean boring, and beige actually is a trend right now as well. Patterns like leopard print, plaid, houndstooth, polka dots etc. are pretty timeless even though they may have sparked and then tanked in popularity for short periods of time.

My thing about fashion rules is that they're helpful in identifying items that are actively working against you; you don't need to be scared of not always looking your best but very few people are actually aiming for the sickly pallor that your worst colors can create. That said a lot of colors aren't doing either and knowing what your options are is helpful. I gotta agree with you about IG. Pinterest is good if you want to conceptualize a direction but IG is still the best place to be if you want up to date inspo. You just have to be good about keeping it well curated since people aren't always gonna be active or sharing the same interests as you for years on end.

I feel like the only time where I've won as a 5'2 woman is with midi and maxi skirts! Midis on me are like super-long midis and maxis hit the floor almost. And I love both lengths! (And mini of course, it's a classic) Short midi "over the knee" can go die in a ditch, no matter how hard the designers push this stupid length again, I won't wear it!

I have mixed feelings about resellers for me thrifting is yes a more sustainable way of shopping ( even though the real issue is over consumption and that can also happen when shopping second hand ) but also it's the only option for a lot of people that can't afford to buy elsewhere and thanks in part to resellers and to capitalism in general it's harder for lower income people to afford even thrifting. But i also saw a girl that works as a personal shopper for thrift shops that's a cool concept in my opinion she is still in a way a reseller but there is an added value.

I love your point about “dressing for body type.” I used to feel like I would only look “good” by dressing to my body type but I was never comfortable with the way dressing this way emphasizes my figure. For women who don’t want to emphasize their body, dressing for body type is often bad advice. For years, I felt that because I am an hourglass figure, I couldn’t wear anything “masculine” shaped. How wrong I was!! I wish someone had told me I don’t have to emphasize my figure shape in order to look good!

For me, resellers who price their stock reasonably and get a lot of their stock from “the bins” I have 0 issue with and wish them nothing but the best in their endeavours. I just can’t stand the resellers who put a 10,000% mark up on clothes they got for $5, take plus size clothes and “thrift flip” them for profit, etc. People who defend that kind of reselling are abhorrent imo. But reselling itself isn’t a bad thing at all and can be done in positive ways.

The systems i think alexa is referring to is kibbe and kitchener based. They have nothing to do with age or even color for that matter. Sometimes, they have color recommendations but that really has to do with personal/seasonal colour analysis, which may have an audience overlap with kibbe/kitchener fans because we love organization and categories lmaooo. But really kibbe is about lines and how garments lay on different bodies types, not age.

For me (at 53), midi is the right length. Maxi is just too much fabric, I feel either swallowed up or like I am wearing a nightgown. Mini is not for me either. Midi is just right.

For me (at19) it's also the right length. It just flatters my body better. Also Maxi is oftentimes to restricting and Mini is a bit to inappropriate for church etc.

I’m a reseller but I’m not rude at the thrift stores I’m new , I’ve only been doing it for a couple of months and as a buyer a lot longer I think it’s worth it. Also literally every business on the planet gets their inventory for less then they sell if for. Or they’d never make a profit. A lot if work goes into reselling. I have seen bad resellers though

I actually like the whole color season and body dtyping thing. Not because I'm a rule follower because it's actually quite helpful for those who have zero idea what direction to go. I have a slight hatred for the advice 'wear whatever you want'. To put it simply, many people don't know what they want to wear. It gets even harder when advertizers are consistently trying to get you buy into trends and etc. If your somelne who really struggles with what really makes you 'feel' good and why clothes don't look the same on you like it does on the girls you see online. I got into it because i was a college student who'd never actually gotten into fashion (with a full blown hoarding addiction though lol). I think the best direction to go is to know whether you like dressing for your body type or want to avoid it all together is to do what you want to do. I you want to dress for your body? Do it. If you don't? Do that. There are so many ways to get into fashion that shaming someone for doind either or is kind of pointless. Loved the video as usual!!! Agreed! I can't with midi lengths. I have naturally thick legs and the length doesn't flatter me. I generally stick to mini's and maxi's. Though for work purposes, I sometimes wear midi lengths but keep in mind I always wear a stocking to balance things.

Even in my 👧youth, midi skirts could feel frumpy👵on me🤣. They often strike me as being too ⛪️churchy, corporate🏦, or formal/proper🏰. 😉Although I've been 👩‍🔬experimenting w/the ones hoarded in my closet to see if I can add a more casual streetwear spin. Searching for High/Low Contrast to make these feminine, but somewhat matronly dresses more suitable for my own rebellious personality & more casual lifestyle. Plus, recovering from a 🦵broken leg (& subsequent surgeries), so covering up my scars & now slightly mismatched knees makes sense😊. ❤Love Short skirts〰️2-3" above the knee where my curvier thighs slim down. They feel 💯% more youthful👩‍🦳 & energizing⚡️. Never could do mini-skirts comfortably w/my wide hips↔️. Avoid anything I feel like I gotta keep pulling down ⬇️ for proper coverage. 🤔Prefer "set it & forget it" philosophy toward clothing〰️instead of fussing all day w/them. 😃Also find short a-line & pencil skirts to be a great polished casual "shorts 🩳 alternative" when the 😎LA heat dials up🌡. Tea or ankle length skirts are my main jam. They offer nice ☀️sun protection too. Since I must wear 🥿flats & sneakers👟 exclusively @ present, thinking about adding splits ✂️ where possible. I may be a little biased because I regularly watch their channel but the founder is a really great genuine person. and they do have cute prints!! not like a ton of options rn but they are soo cute.

Totally agree that everyone should wear what they want and a lot of body-type info is trash! As someone who primarily does online shopping, though, I really love knowing and referencing my Kibbe-type. It has helped me refine a personal style, as well as cut down on spending, consumerism, and feeling like I need to follow trends. Color season knowledge has helped me in the same way. It doesn't have to be black and white...we should all just embrace what helps us feel confident and have fun with our clothes!

i have mixed feelings on resellers. on one hand, very thankful for them because i recently got merch from a band that i love but doesn't have much merch out in general because they were on hiatus for like a decade and the person i bought it from sold it at a reasonable price and i have lots of things saved on depop that are under 30$ from various sellers. but then i see the ones selling "SUPER RARE" stuff for hundreds of dollars like...it's a band t-shirt that was bought for like 25$ why are you doing that? (i understand it takes time to find things to resell, i'm a big thrifter so i know it's a time commitment, but come on). i like that it's a way to keep things out of developing countries and landfills especially when there's just stuff that some people can't find in their area when they thrift whether it's particular styles that are easily found in other areas or it's a size that is more easily found in other areas. my overall opinions on resellers has changed for the more positive than what i initially had thought when it first got majorly trendy to resell

Tbh I love kitten heels but I agree they are a pain! Whenever it gets hot enough to wear them again I have to do a few trial walks first to just get used to them, which means stumbling a lot (thank god im not easily emberassed), but once I get used to them they are my favourite shoes. I guess its similar to breaking in docs in the sense that you really need to know whether you have the patience to put up with them. But I once spent an entire vacation in Italy just switching between my sambas and my kitten heels and both were equally as comfortable to walk around the city in!

I agree that people shouldn’t limit themselves to specific clothes for body type, etc. People should just wear what they want to and are comfortable in! I also agree that reselling is 100% okay within reason. My mom has her own consignment shop, and she got her original inventory by reselling stuff from thrift. What really grinds my gears are people that upcharge a ridiculous amount and refuse to budge on price. Or when they charge more than the original price brand new. I get so mad when I see people reselling Holo Taco collectible boxes for like a hundred dollars.

I like resellers as i live in a smaller city, so a lot of the goodwills only have stuff from walmart. There are a few vintage clothing shops and local clothes brands that sell high quality stuff, but its mostly "old man cowboy" styles. Online thrifting allows me to get quality clothes in styles i like second hand

I feel like it's risky for sustainable brands to produce non-basic items since a lot of them have to source dyes and stuff and also have to pay more for the creation of more intricate/interesting designs and patterns. Unless it's designer, which costs a fortune, I think we are stuck with simplicity for a while..

Going in to a thrift store and sifting through a bunch of crap (ie fast fashion garments donated by people because they’re using the thrift store as a dumping ground for their mistakes) is a time consuming and labour intensive activity. Like you said, I think resellers make secondhand clothing more accessible to more people who otherwise don’t have the time or skill to go thrifting. At the end of the day there are way more clothes in a thrift store that can ever be bought and most of them end up in the landfill anyway, so I think resellers are helping the cause more than hurting it. The real problem is people who get fast fashion hauls and then donate that garbage to the thrift store

I don’t get why people think resalers are horrible. If you don’t want to spend $100 on a shirt? Don’t. And if someone else does? So? Another thing not going into a landfill. You know who I see at my goodwill bins? Old or disabled people trying to get something they need and can’t afford or getting things cheap to resale for a little extra cash. To the dressing for your body type point, I think the community is a little misunderstood. Rather than rules, these theories are more like guidelines. Also I'm not trying to change people's minds because I totally see why it could be seen as limiting and negative. The influencers I follow usually focus on the Kibbe typing system, which takes into account the holistic view of a woman's body on a scale of sharpness to softness (yin and yang). With the information you get from your type, rather than trying to fit a certain standard, you use that to then achieve the look you are going for. It's not so much what you "can or can't wear", it's how can you create a look that harmonizes with your features OR juxtaposes them. This is in contrast to the fruit typing system, which is more well-known, and tries to help women make themselves look like a specific shape, the hourglass. Of course, wearing whatever you want however you want is always awesome. I just like categorizing 😁

Part of the mark up in thrift and resale store is also because of inflation and wage increases. More and more places are willingly paying their employees higher base wages, and more locations are instituting minimum wages that exceed the federal minimum. And inflation makes pretty much everything more expensive. People online will sometimes try to deny these factors by pointing out that new clothing is not increasing in price much, but the fact that second hand clothing is increasing in price so much faster than new clothing is a genuinely concerning economic phenomenon, that tells you how little people are being paid along the supply line.

May I share something i always notice about your videos. You will say i feel like and then follow it with an opinion. I went into therapy about a year ago as I was having problems in my relationship. My therapist asked me if i told him how I feel. I said yes and told him. He said no you have told what you think nothing of what you said was a feeling. It really helped me to get in touch with my feelings better. I didnt know how much I had been masking them and I found it difficult to navigate decisions. i really really do not like "how to dress for your body type" posts. i know it might make some people fee better, but the ultimate goal we should promote is to wear whatever you want and embrace your body type i have broad shoulders and love off-shoulder clothes. all the "how to dress for your body type" videos say not to wear them, and it took me a long time to realise that this is the body i was born with so i'm not going to let it stop me from wearing what i like. all those videos do is show you how to cover your body features that don't fit the beauty standard. if you like something, just wear it! if you love a colour but it "doesn't suit your skin tone", you can still wear it! the worst feeling is looking at clothes you love but thinking you can't wear them because they don't suit you and someone else would suit them better

I personally think reselling is fine. So many clothes are thrown away, so reselling is very sustainable, because at the end of the day, it's all about reduce reuse. Also, when shopping on depop, poshmark, ect, YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE CURATION OF THE ITEMS!!! This also applies to expensive vintage stores- instead of sorting through a bunch of junk to find that one in a million piece, every item is gold. That is literally the entire point and I don't understand how people don't get that. Not everyone has the time or patience to sift through a bunch of garbage. That is why the retail goodwill stores are more expensive than the wholesale goodwill warehouses. It's all relative. If you want to pay a higher price not to spend hours looking for one thing, do it! If not, don't! There is plenty of used clothes to go around- and then some.

Part of the problem in the United States at least is that a lot of people use the term (and have the mindset of) thrifting when discussing any kind of secondhand buying. If you view all secondhand fashion with a mindset of “thriftiness” the idea of paying higher prices can be ridiculous.

I do agree that there is nuance to reselling, what I do want to mention though are the resellers that literally roughhouse people at places like JetRag and even at local goodwills. Like I have witnessed it and experienced it first hand. I don't come from money and I am from a community that is similar and places like JetRag or other similar dollar sales are how we outfit ourselves. The disgust that these resellers have for poorer people and the rudeness they have towards literally everyone including each other is just in bad taste. I have no problem with people who use reselling to make ends meet or to create more circular fashion, those are not the people acting out towards poor people. It's just unfortunate that resellers in many places have raised the prices in thrift stores and are rude to people trying to get what they can within their means.

Im the same, I don’t really like the look of midi skirts or dresses on me. I have pretty wide calves and it just accentuates them. But I feel like all of the cute dresses or skirts are midi, so sometimes I compromise and still buy midi and wear them with long socks or long boots
