Back when you were posting this i was painting with you not commenting..i went to an azo yellow rather than azo green and phthalo green yellow shade..i was having the same problem with yellow ochre that you had...muddy..not till using Lirons palette did i venture back but still wasnt convinced. I found that these 8 could lake me afield. No longer able to paint but reviewing as my great granddaughter thinks she wants to be an artist..,,me, i am trying not to overwhelm her with info and supplies, but that remains to be seen. I hope you continue your teaching for a long time..she is only 13, and i won't be here to guide her, but i am hopeful she finds good teachers along the way,

For someone who cannot afford to keep buying paints to find the right ones, this is the most helpful video ! Your Red iron oxide combo is exactly colors I was looking for. This is one of the most instructive videos on watercolor in KZbin. People usually form their palette by asking other people, such as the shop owner or a friend, and end up quitting watercolor or switching over to another media because they cannot get the vibrancy they are expecting to see. I stopped using Cadmium and opaque colors like yellow ocher long ago because they mud when mixed with other colors (unless I am painting mud). They are okay at the very last glaze as individual colors if I am painting a detail, but not as a major color on my palette. Using transparent colors in watercolor is the key to success. Well done! I agree w/Carl Pen's comments here - a good starter set'll have a warm & cool rev of each of the three primaries, plus warm & cool 'earth tones' (like Sepia & Paynes Gray, as you have here), with as many of these colors being transparent as possible (just gives you more flexibility). Azo Green & Indian Yellow seem (to me) to be pretty extreme choices for the warm & cool yellows - but wow - when you show how nicely they mix w/everything else to make such a beautiful variety of colors... I'm sold! Your videos are very helpful - thank you!

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I will hasten to say that I usually have more than 8 colors on my palette. These are just some favorites and not necessarily meant to be a fully balanced and complete palette, although they will suffice by themselves in most situations.

You convinced me. That is a gorgeous pallete with so many possibilities! I didn't have the budget to buy all 8 right now in M. Graham. However, Lukas full pans and Turner tubes are on sale at Jerry's Artarama. I went to the M. Graham site and noted each pigment and managed to exactly match the pigments between the two other brands. I also made sure they were all transparent colors and matched the colors themselves as closely as possible from their swatches (hard to tell from tablet pics.) Hopefully I end up with something similar. I have a Cotman 14 color travel set now which uses the same pigment in their burnt sienna as M.G's red iron oxide and is thankfully one of the few brands to offer the pigment in a transparent. (It isn't quite as red/orange though) I also inherited my late Nana's watercolors and she had a Cotman's Sepia and a Liquitex Payne's Gray. Not quite the same but hopefully a good start. I don't think Liquitex even makes watercolors anymore? If anyone is interested here is a match up of the colors on sale that I bought and the color I'm attempting to substitute for. Lukas full pan Green Yellow - Azo Green. Turner Permanent Yellow Orange - Indian Yellow, Turner Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Deep, Quin Red - Same Names. I also picked up Lukas full pan Magenta which is the same pigment as Quin Red but prepared differently and seems to produce a much more violet red than the Quin Red and I thought I might find useful in Florals. It is also transparent. What really killed my budget was the 4 new brushes and a pad of Arches paper! Lol (Also based on your recommendations. I ended up with a black velvet 3 brush round set and a Neptune 1/2 inch cat tongue.) Thank you for the video. I found it very useful. I'm a lifelong artist but watercolor has never been my medium so the advice on pigments and transparency levels has been extremely helpful! I prefer the luminosity and look of truly transparent watercolors so Yay! Thank you again 😊.

Kerri McCafferty I bought mine on eBay. There was a jobber that had a store close out. I paid about $3. A tube. More colors than I needed but it was a great door in. Search professional watercolor NWT.

Just so you know, the same pigment made into watercolor by different companies usually produces noticeably different hues. Ultramarine blue is just about the only basic paint color that is consistent from brand to brand.

Definitely agree with the azo green here - I only began using it about a year ago, but am finding more and more uses for it. My personal favourite mixing partner for it is perylene green. I start most of my botanicals with that mix.

I must have watched this video 5 times.I guess I am more interested in the chemistry of paints than the actual painting. I just got the W&N green gold and while thinking where to place it in my palette (yellow or green) I remembered having seen something similar in yours. I love Prussian Blue too. :) I learned that when making a small palette it should contain: A warm and cool of: Yellow, Red, Blue, Green. Along with those two earth tones and a black of some sort. I learned this was a good starting point. The nice thing with just being told "warm and cool" is you get to choose the colour. Makes for vastly different palettes and you can begin to personalize them.

Burnt umber and prussian blue make a great black when mixed. You don't really need black.

You sound like me, Patsie! I think the trick is to actually sit down and play with your paints to learn what they can do instead of a goal oriented painting like a landscape or a bunch of flowers, if you know what I mean. I learned the hard way, not knowing any better, and bought student grade paints and worse yet, student grade paper. I now know it's key to invest in good, professional grade watercolor paper. Even a novice can work wonders with student grade paints as long as they're using quality watercolor paper. Now I'm trying to learn which colors I need/want to put into my empty palette, sigh. I gotta do something with all the tubes of paint I've bought, lol.

Great video, as always, Steve. I always love to see what artists put in their favorites list. I really like the way you show the mixes and compare them to other pigments. Very helpful. When I first started painting, I bought dozens of colors. Once I learned about mixing paints, I realized that many of them I didn't need and never used. An expensive lesson to learn. I think beginners will find this video invaluable. Wish I had had this when I first started.

I may as well change my name to Miss Muddy because my colors are all the basics that you mentioned but didn’t demonstrate, such as Sap Green, and my mixing experience is a mud bath. I LOVED THE CLARITY you achieved here. This is why we love watercolor, for it’s clear, translucency, its vibrancy. I’ve gone off into Mud Central and honestly I’m sick of it. What a great video! You really model well what you teach. I agree, playing with color is a great way to learn more about the living quality of water color. One thing I do that helps me as a beginner: on my "play sheets" I will write next to the swatch which colors I've used. That way if I try to repeat that color combo for an actual painting I can look in my "play book". Thanks again for your excellent inspiration, God bless you and your loved ones.

I already have a wc set (it's the St. Petersburg watercolors- which are fantastic and perfect for my style) but i have to say my favorite colors is probably the paynes grey. Paynes grey is my fav. color anyway (and i know it can be mixed with burnt sienna and ult. blue); but i especially like the SP color. It is so pigmented that if desired it could be almost black; and granulates into a beautiful, sad grey. The colors in the SP set are so unique; i cant seem to find another paint like them! I love these paints and wouldn't trade them for any other. (okay maybe schminke; maybe).

I have just spent several hour this afternoon looking at colour wheels trying to figure out the best colours that I should use for my beginners palette, then I watched your demo ....what wonderful colousr can be gained from 8 ( your 8) preferred colours. Ok, everybody will have their own personal preferences. Great idea to just play with the paint that I have and discover the numerous combinations. Thanks Steve, great advice as usual.
