Some high end TVs have mirroring built in. I was able to extend and duplicate my pro 3 on my Sony X900B wirelessly. Would also work oj Sony X850b. Just need to add the TV as a device in SP3. Some Samsung TVs also have the mirror capability

Hey great video. Regarding External CD/ DVD drive. There may be an independently powered CD/DVD drive, which will allow you to use the surface pro 3+ with out having the Surface plugged into its wall charger. There are other powered USB hubs on the market which will help reduce the use of the Surface power. The only draw back to independently powered externals of course is the increase in wires :). always a trade off I guess. Do you have any over heating issues from gaming or heavy video editing? I heard the use of a fan on the side. Note. I didn't read all the comments below, and not sure if any other KZbin users mentioned what I said

Thanks for showing all the accessories for the Surface Pro 3, Sean. The only one I don't understand completely is the USB hub. I understand the need for the hub, but what does the Ethernet cord do for me? And what do I plug into it? Also, I've read that a hub needs an additional power source but obviously you didn't have that need, is that right? Thanks for your help!

+Barb Laub That's right, this hub doesn't need a power source. That also means that you can't plug a bunch of "heavy" users into it, such as multiple external hard drives with spinning discs, etc... As for the Ethernet port, it can come in handy at a place like a hotel room, where you can plug in an Ethernet cord when the wifi is spotty, if you need to set up a new router or modem, or work in a place where you need to be plugged into Ethernet. The most common use case for ethernet though, is using it to achieve ultra fast network/internet speeds with very low lag (usually for advanced gamers). For most people, they probably don't need ethernet, but it's an added bonus for this little hub. Hope that helps

hey Sean.. I have not been using my surface RT for so long and I was looking for something todo with it. I think broadcasting my surface rt to my TV to make it a smart TV sounds like a very good idea. However, I found the netgear to cost around 70 bucks. So before making this purchase, I just want to know if the fact that it's RT, will cause the broadcasting to have a limited functionality or not. if so, then I will just go with the wired HDMI adapter thanks

That DVD drive looks very similar in color to your type cover, That is the surface 3 type cover and not the surface pro 3 type cover correct? does anyone know a dvd drive that matches more closely to the surface pro 3 red type cover?

eiluxx I've not found anything that works well yet. The power cover does work for the SP3 (as I show in one of my videos), but it's fairly bulky to use as a power bank. I'll be sure to keep an eye out!

Stay away from the recommended Satechi USB 3.0 -3 port Hub with Gigabit Ethernet, its not totally compatible with the Surface Pro 3 as I experience frequent hang ups and lag when using a wireless mouse (Microsoft) with 2.4Mhz dongle (USB2.0). Couldn't connect my portable DVD drive which works intermittently and freezes as well. If I connect the Ethernet port, the rest of the USB port stop working. On the who this HUB device is incompatible with Surface Pro 3. I will have to pay extra and buy that original Surface Pro accessory. :(

Entheogin913 it's Intel graphics 400 I believe so it's not going to run the most demanding PC games.

How is battery drain when you connect via Miracast adapter? I tried with Roku 3 stick (that has a beta Miracast feature) it worked but drained battery very fast.

Yes, battery life definitely goes down when using wireless display. I haven't quantified what the actual impacts are yet though.

+Dr Kathy Vertesi Yes, any of the small Portable hard drives will not give you problems. I use both the WD and Seagate on the Surface 3 (non pro) with great results.

The Surface 3 doesn't put out enough power via the USB to power the DVD drive. I got it to work, but only sometimes. You will be better off finding a powered DVD drive (one that you plug into the USB and also plug into the wall for power). Hope that helps.

GeeKeD-OuT Yup, I show a Surface 2 (RT and Surface Pro 3. All these accessories work great with the Surface Pro 2 as well. The only one I'd be a bit concerned about is the DVD drive - as I said in the video, I'd recommend someone try to find one that uses less power.

chri8067 I personally don't like to use screen protectors. They can't hurt, but I abuse my screen a lot and it never scratches. For normal use, I'd say it's not needed, but that's my opinion!

srujay Although I'm not sure I believe they would work the main reason the Ethernet port didn't work on the adapter was because he has a Surface 2(RT) on his pro 3 its full windows 8.1 so drivers are more readily available.

Hi Sean, I have trouble with my Netgear PTV3000: Since the latest firmware update for the Surface Pro 3 the two devices don't connect anymore. Did you experience the same and have any info on what to do?

Stefan Adler I've not experienced that, but I did hear of some reports saying that the Surface Pro 3 doesn't behave as well with other miracast devices. Did you try re-adding the miracast receiver in your devices menu? You might also try a lower resolution to start.

Sean Ong Yes, I tried re-adding the PTV3000, but that does not solve the problem. Yesterday I read that sometimes it helps to set back the Windows 8.1 installation to a restore point point before the firmware update. This of course makes it possible to use the Netgear device, but as soon as I install the firmware update again, the PTV3000 does not work (some people reported that Miracast worked with their device after the second try). This whole issue is very frustrating. Hopefully I won't have to ditch the device and Netgear will work on a firmware update for the PTV3000. It was an expensive device and I bought it only three months ago!

Vlasiu Cristian I don't quite understand your question. The surface connects to the miracast device wirelessly. The miracast device connects to your TV or monitor via HDMI cable (usually included in the miracast box). I hope that helps.

Help!! I don't know what I'm missing - albeit I don't know much about computers, I have followed your advise and purchased the exact same external dvd, and I have a 3.0 usb hub from amazon: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BERGFV6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 -- I am trying to play a kid's PC, Nancy Drew Detective type game, and I'm also trying The Great Courses DVD - neither seem to work. I've downloaded VLC media player you recommend also. The external disc drive comes with the 'DVD Writer Installation Disc' -- I got confused there. I chose to 'run' this - I think that happened - then it takes me to a page asking me to choose which software I want, 3 of which say 'free trial' and the 4th is 'Nero Media Home' as a choice, and I'm not sure what the heck that is, or if it's free, or just a free trial. (I told you I don't know a thing when it comes to all of this!) I just want to use my surface pro 3 with an external dvd drive - I homeschool so I could use that option for playing music, the Nancy Drew PC discs, and The Great Courses educational series. What am I doing wrong?????! Please help, thank you!

+carre griffin First, make sure the power cord is plugged into the Surface when using the DVD drive. Also, make sure the DVD drive is plugged directly into the Surface and not the USB 3.0 hub. Let me know if that works. If not, I'm happy to help you troubleshoot, just let me know what's happening. Hope that helps!

+Sean Ong -- Hi, thanks for responding! Okay, so I plugged the dvd to the surface directly and the 'Great Courses' DVD worked! Unfortunately, the Nancy Drew game doesn't. I get a notification that says 'USB Power Surge Unknown usb device needs more power than is supplied' or something to that effect..and I can hear the dvd starting and stopping (or at least that is what is sounds like it's doing). Can I not play these type of DVD's? It's a kids PC, interactive mystery game. Nothing fancy. In fact, it's pretty old. What is the extent of what *can* be played on the dvd drive? Thanks!!

+carre griffin That's strange that it's working for some of your DVDs but not others. All movies and data DVDs I've tried works. I've not tried a game. Would it work to copy the game to your surface first? some games don't allow you to do that but some do, so it might be worth a shot. Hope that helps!
