If you love Mary Shelley , check out the book little by Edward Carey because it’s the story of madam Tussaud and it feels very Frankensteiny and there’s another book called Mary that’s meant to be really good but I haven’t got to it yet ❤ Thanks for the book recommendations

I have you to thank for introducing me to The Last Tale of the Flower Bride! It was very much right up my alley and I was enthralled from beginning to end. I agree that its more of a lit fic rather than an actual fantasy. I know that some people aren't a fan of her prose and call it "purple" or "flowery". Josiah Bancroft is an author I've started reading from this year (a new favorite in fact) and people have the same complaints about his prose but I'm a sucker for beautiful language.

I haven't read any of these, and I've barely heard of any of them, either (except for Fonda Lee, Holly Black, and Mona Awad), but you've intrigued me enough to add The Last Tale of the Flower Bride to my TBR. That sounds right up my alley. I also own a copy of The Cruel Prince that you've encouraged me to get to sooner. :P Great list! I love your thoughtful, erudite evaluations and your willingness to frequently step outside of your comfort zone. I mentioned it in a previous video, but I strive to do the same with my own reading, so it's great seeing someone else who tries to do the same thing. :) Happy New Year! Edit: You also sealed the deal with The Scarlet Veil when you mentioned how Gothic the vampires were, and the masquerade ball on Halloween. Say less. I'm there. XD

My #1 favorite book of the year is The Stillest Day by Josephine Hart. The writing is some of the most beautiful I've ever read. There's an unhinged woman main character, discussions on art and religion, gothic vibes (in the second half, especially), and so much symbolism and depth to the story. More people need to know about it! I highly recommend, I think you would love it. Also, the Goodreads synopsis is actually a perfect description. “Obsessed with the vision of a man's face, a young artist and teacher risks a blasphemous act and enrages her turn-of-the-century village community, in a provocative novel by the author of Damage, Sin, and Oblivion.”
