Glad you like the cage Caleb! I designed it with Smallrig. I noticed you using it a while back. I'm glad people such as yourself found it useful as well! I'm hoping the battery grip cage trend catches on so I don't have to do this again for what Panasonic's got next. Almost all cages raise these cameras up to the correct 15mm lightweight Arri rod standard to mount rods. That's just wasted space where the battery grip could go, which adds functionality and solves issues like you mentioned.

Hey Gregory, thank you for that comment. Caleb's setup seems very practical to me and i consider buying the smallrig half-cage, battery grip and handle. My question is about the follow focus mechanism i already own from my previous cage (yelangu). Is it compatible now that there is extra height due to the battery grip space? Searching the smallrig website and amazon, i find no rods and follow focus. Could you please give me a tip on the matter? Thank you!
@MrFreezeMovie
@MrFreezeMovie 6 жыл бұрын
Michalis, the battery grip actually raises the camera up to correct height for accessories like follow focuses. The Arri rod standard for 15mm lightweight rods means the center of the rods should be 85mm from the optical center of the camera. This cage mounts rods at exactly that distance. Like I previously said, "Almost all cages raise these cameras up to the correct 15mm lightweight Arri rod standard to mount rods. That's just wasted space where the battery grip could go".

I really wish you would do a video comparing a rigged out GH5S, that does not have IS, verses a GH5 with IS showing how much of a difference it makes having a bigger heavier setup to counteract shake. There has got to be something to these guys running around with bigger cameras likes REDs and C200s with cine-primes handheld and their footage not looking like they fell down a flight of stairs.

I wouldn't advise using the .64x xl speedbooster unless you exclusively shoot with full frame lenses due to the vignetting it'll produce with APSC lenses.

@@ITNRG I got recently got the GH5s and the sigma 18-35 with the Viltrox (0.71x) adapter There's a vignette at 18mm but when zoomed in at 20 mm, it goes away. I figured its just because of the GH5s slightly bigger sensor size. It's annoying, but you can definitely work around it. If you are shooting in log, color grading in post will definitely make it very noticeable. But if shot in regular picture profiles, its a little hard to tell. Here is a perfect example of the same results I was getting with the camera kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2q6hql4jqaClck

@@andrewvu3083 thank so much for your answer. That's really helpful. I wonder if I would have better ordered the GH5 instead of the GH5S. Due to the smaller sensor size there should be no vignetting at 18mm at all, right? I really appreciate an answer 🙏
@andrewvu3083
@andrewvu3083 5 жыл бұрын
@@ITNRG Np man! Also, you are right. The GH5 has a slightly smaller sensor so it will produce no vignetting when used wide open at 18mm. The Crop factor is around 2x for the GH5s when compared to the (1.9x - 1.8) crop factor of the GH5s (depends on what mode you shoot at). However, if you want absolutely no vignetting with the sigma 18-35, then you should pull the trigger on the GH5 which has amazing in-body image stabilization; something that the GH5s doesn't have. I found that despite me having pretty steady hands, a Ronin S is really necessary to have usable smooth footage for the GH5s.

It seems like so many have forgotten that a few years ago IBIS wasn't an option and people still filmed lovely hanheld shots. So many people just consider cameras without ibis useless for handheld now but many cameras still don't have it and all cameras before it were very useable. I've seen people talking about cameras like the FS5 or the C200 being useless for running and gunning because they don't have ibis, what?!

That's right. I found myself guilty of this! IBIS is nice, but not looking very natural. A few months ago, I decided to go with an Olympus EM-1 instead of a BPMCC essentially because it didn't had IBIS... ... I don't know why I just bough into this idea. Bullshit. I now have my BMPCC set-up with Rokinon Cine DS lenses, and I am selling ALL of my other cameras, and getting a second one. Perhaps it doesn't shoot 4K, but hey, theaters screens are 2K after all...! And you can have more than 13fps dynamic range. Not kidding. The BMPCC file format have a weird algorithm compressing the dynamic range, I believe because it's already a fucking unbelievable deal... But... if you go ahead and switch from Black Magic LOG => Rec 709 color space in Resolce (while preserving luminance), then put the gamut at Rec 709 as well and the input at Rec 709, click luminance mapping... But choose Arri Alexa output. BOOM! You just gained two fucking fps and your lowly 500 bucks camera from eBay is now 99,9999% of an a 50K camera. I'm serious, this is how pro colo-grading artists did in Hollywood to grade BPMCC footage. And this trick been passed on to me by a friend who worked as a VFX artist in Hollywood for 17 years.

As another proud owner and KZbinr as well, I do agree that the GH5 is the best camera for what we do. There are things that they can do on the software side to make it better. For one get rud of that mountain and flower focus distance ranger. It's better to have what the S1H has with the actual measurement. Two, give us more paid upgrades. I can't just think that the only paid upgrade was VLOGL. Which tells me the camera can do more. I bet a higher dynamic range in the shadows and more. They are holding it back. Here why say this. The G9; better processor same sensor, but it won't work with the audio adapter. Panasonic is just stopping it. Isn't true the BMPCC4K is the same sensor as the GH5s?

Shame there isn't really anything out there to go by... the original had such nice dynamic range, pushable image and overall film-like vibe. But this using the same sensor as seen in the Panasonic... are they really able to step it up from what they are doing? Sure hope so, just wish there was some footage and reviews out there before ordering though... This might've lost the 'pocket'-factor a bit, but let's be honest, the battery life, screen quality, audio et cetera wasn't really making the original very practical as an actual pocketable on-the-go camera. This time around it seems much more usable. Curious to see how it will come out.

Awesome video. I have been doing a ton of research on camera cages for an article I am working on. There are 2 items that I think would make your setup even better. 1. A better option for your left handle attachment is the Smallrig Quick Release Rosette clamp rather than the bolt on one. It will save you about 8-10 seconds on mounting or removal of your wooden handle. Great if you're traveling. 2. The red grip you have is nice, but a better option is the Nato handle by Wood Cameras. It has the ability to mount 15mm and 19m rods + the handle can spin 360 degrees allowing different mounting options. As far as full vs half cages, your half cage IMO is a bunch better option, since it gives you full access to buttons/dials.

Both Smallrig and Niceyrig sell it. Niceyrig is about 1/2 the cost of the Smallrig one. They look the same. I think you can get a longer Nato rail that would extend it out far enough to not get in the way of the battery (Maybe).

Cool Setup! No doubt about that. I look for the ultimate setup which does these three things: I. MODE1. Superlightweight for gimbal use (basically camera only) II. MODE2: Rigged Version for handheld AND tripod use III. My dream setup shall require as little building time for switching between MODE1 and MODE2 as possible. My conclusion this far ist to buy 2 cameras. Have one barebone camera on the gimbal all the time. And keep the 2nd one rigged up. All cages need some time and you have to mount / remove several parts. What are others doing?

Hey Caleb! I have a tiny gripe with the Speedbooster XL on my GH5 and I'm wondering if you've had this issue as well: The XL isn't 100% tight on the body, so with bigger lenses like my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L II it rotates a tiny bit (about half a degree) depending on how I hold the camera. This wouldn't be an issue since it doesn't affect the image, but it sometimes jams the camera up! The camera literally goes completely unresponsive and the screen is just locked into the image before moving the speedbooster. The only solution to the lock up is to remove the battery, since even turning the on/off switch to off does nothing in this state. Great video once again man, keep it up!

You mentioned the gh5 and gimbal combo as a negative - this may be misguided I find some weird things going on as the gimbal movement throws off the IS on the GH5. HOWEVER With my GH5s (and GH4) the stabilisation is actually better. as the 2 IS systems aren't fighting each other. Having BOTH the GH5 and the GH5s in the bag (yes I have both) I feel like I am covered for any situation. GH5s comes out for interviews, gimbals and low light. The GH5 s when I have to go handheld and chase action - or quick pick ups with faked small dolly motions. And of course having a wide angle and zoom mounted on 2 bodies ready to go speeds up shooting time.

I need some advice... I'm creating KZbin channels for my clients. Foremorst interviews, testimonials (no commercial bs), explainer/academy-type and product-review styled videos. Now I have the GH5 and two panasonic G80's. For interviews I noticed too big of a difference in the image quality between the GH5 and the G80's. Besides that, I can never reach the DOF "needed'", due to the M43 sensors. I'm thinking of switching to 2x A6300, a A6500 and a A7 III or the A7S III whenever it is available. I need 3 camera's foran interview e.g. and another good camera that can do great video + photo (I often combine those two for my clients). Either I invest +- 5200 euros (ex VAT) on A6500, and 2x A6300 with a couple of lenses, or I can buy 2 GH5s, but therefore I'd need to work with adapters like the Metabones/Viltrox. Problem is, the GH5 that I have, or the GH5s's I'd buy are good for photography ( standard lenses just don't offer enough DOF for me personally). Color and imagery-quality is not SUPER duper important to me. Color grading is not my best skill in Video Production. WIll learn about it more in the future though, with which I mean that 10 bit oversized files are not really 'necessary' for me. Any advice /suggestions here?

But I can't figure which of the Viltrox adapters I need to use all 4 lenses on my recently purchased G85, either as straight adapters or as speedboosters. I know that the third party lenses are obviously Nikon mounts, but which version - are they also of the G type? I could sure use some help on the matter so that I buy the correct adapter. Caleb, when you do your full GH5s review -- I'd really appreciate it if you could explain the differences between the 20MP - GH5 sensor and the GH5s - 10MP sensor and why that does/doesn't matter? I'm fairly new to the world of photo/video making and both of those cameras are a little out of my budget right now (using GX85 currently), but it's always good to have an idea of what to look at in the next level range of equipment. So when I think the GH5 is my ideal tool (if I ever get the money) then the GH5s comes out and is supposed to be better for video, but only has a 10MP sensor, my noob self is a little scared because that seems like it should be a significant downgrade. Thanks!

Hello, I own a GH5S and for the most part really love this camera. I did have one question though. Any time I shoot in VFR I get fairly bad horizontal noise, especially in V-Log. From what I've learned, V-log is not the best picture profile to shoot VFR in. However, I have noticed this type of noise shows up in other picture profiles as well when using VFR. The noise seems to show up in any black or dark colors, regardless of how well lit the scene is. I'm fairly inexperienced with shooting in high frame rates, and am wondering if I'm exposing incorrectly. Just looking for tips as to how to shoot cleaner without using noise reduction in post.

if you use the Metabones XL 0.64 with the Sigma 18-35 on a GH5s, you will see heavy vignetting once you go lower then 20mm.

Hey Caleb, GREAT VIDEO!!! I would love to see a detailed comparaison between GH5s and A7iii. I'm currently a Nikon and Fujifilm photographer who's interested in getting into video. Therefore i have nothing from either company in terms of lens. I am very curious to see a GH5s with speed booster and sigma 18-35 1.8 VS a A7iii with a 24-70 2.8. How clean can you get of an image in lower light. I'm referring to street video or indoor evening parties. Probably will make my decision after Sony releases its A7Siii.

Metabones Question: If cost was a factor and you had to decide between buying a GH5 with the metabones ultra speed booster or getting the GH5S with no metabones booster or maybe even the viltrox, what would you choose? I'm a little skeptical about the viltrox...

Great setup and video! Please do NOT buy the Speed Booster XL for the GH5s. I have the GH5s and tested 100 times with it. A lot of vignetting with Sigma 18-35 lens due to larger multi-aspect ratio sensor. The vignetting disappears only at 24mm which is frustrating. I will sell the Speed Booster XL and will buy the Speed Booster Ultra like you have. Hope that helps!
@danielblack5196
@danielblack5196 6 жыл бұрын
TechLineHD that’s an APS-C lens. There shouldn’t be any vignetting with a full frame lens if I’m not mistaken. This could be said with the GH5 or any other micro 4/3 camera as well. If the problem was the GH5s’s slightly longer sensor size isn’t covered by the metabones xl as you seem to claim, than your lens would vignette at every single focal length. If you’re using old manual full frame Nikon lenses or rokinon cinces you wouldn’t be having this issue.

The XL version is to be used with full frame lenses and the Sigma 18-35 is an APS-C lens. The larger image circle of full frame lenses should cover the whole sensor.

So I just bought the Sigma 135mm (Canon EF .. I think it’s FF) ... I should get the XL for the GH5S? I also have a GH5 and don’t want to purchase an XL .. and an Ultra. $1,300 in adaptors 🤨

you are right! I expected this kind of performance but I already had the XL adapter before buying the GH5s. I knew I would need to buy the Ultra to make it work well with APS-C lens. Just wanted to test how the GH5s performs with the XL.

Hey Caleb, I am trying to setup a follow focus system and test out lens accuracy distances and can't find the "Phi" mark a lot of people talk about for making sure you are measuring at the proper starting point. I can't seem to find that on the GH5. How do you go about that on yours? I have the Metabones XL, Ultra and Viltrox throttle as speedboosters as well.
@FlyingJackalope
@FlyingJackalope 5 жыл бұрын
Finally found it with a lot of light and a magnifying glass. Then I got a thin paint marker and just drew a line in various spots so I can see it on the top and sides. Now I can measure properly to see if my lenses are accurate.

Hi everyone! I can't figure out one thing about follow focus. People buy Nuclear Nano motors, Tilta follow focus systems etc. Why no one makes just a knob, that can be plugged into GH5 micro usb port? So that focusing is controlled by that knob. I am talking about lenses with their own motors like popular Sigma 18-35. My Moza Aircross 2 has a knob that can control GH5's focusing. Please someone just produce that KNOB!

Sorry if my question will out of topic from this video but I really need help cause I kept think about it and still cant find the best answer, my question is.. if I have a budget that can spend for buying one camera and all of the equipment (like lenses, gimbal, monitor, ect..) which one is the smart choise to buy for the next 3 or 5 years, sony a7iii or gh5s with atomos ninja v? The reason why I end up with this two camera, first the prices with all those equipment is almost the same (only around $300 - $500 more expensive on the gh5s with all equipment at my place), second.. I like the full frame look and the autofocus on sony, but on gh5s.. I really like 4k DCI 60p10 bit 4.2.2, the color, and limitless time record, third.. I still cant find any youtube videos discuss about a7iii vs gh5s, my purpose to buy this camera for running a small bussines like wedding video, company profile, music video, documentry, ect.. I hope you can help me, thx before..
