THANK YOU for this video!!! John Nunn's Understanding Chess Middlegames is by Gambit and I grabbed the Kindle version for $10 USD. I used a physical notebook, which you recommended, and the first entries are his comments on Activity [part of the middlegame assessment] and pawn majorities [deny squares for enemy pieces] are points I "knew" but now UNDERSTAND.

My favorite books are: Play Winning Chess - Yasser Seirwan (an excellent starting point for players new to chess) and then The Woodpecker Method - Axel Smith and Hans Tikkanen (the best collection of tactics i've solved, not to mention an interesting take on developing pattern recognition and chess instinct well worth a read even for any Master level)
@Schnebbler4 жыл бұрын
You can make your own private book on Chessable and import PGNs in there. Then when going through a book, whenever you do not understand something, find something interesting, think about it for yourself (until you are as sure as you will ever be) and then check it with an engine and put the answer in a PGN (and maybe even the refutation of your idea if it was wrong), then export it and put it in your Chessable course. If it is a tactic you can mark it as tactic, if it is an opening line you can mark it as a line to be learned, if it is just a positional move you can even mark multiple alternative moves that are also good and even add explanations. With time you will have a huge collection of things that you find interesting that you will be exposed to over and over again, which makes sure it sticks. I do it when watching games, why did Carlsen not play this, it is interesting! And if the solution is interesting too, I put it in my course. I do the same when going through any book or my own games and I find it effective, especially since it makes sure the thing you found interesting will come up again, even after months! It is really cool how differently you see a position when you have not seen it for a very long time. And if you insist on training with a real board, then just use Chessable as your archive and train with Chessable and your board.

Yes, grinding through a book takes so long and becoming chess-literate to the point of readily being able to visual what is communicated by notation has been very hard going for me! thx for these recommendations. Yea, I have John Nunn's middlegame book but I'm trying to hold off on it until I work through his endgame book.

I have just received my order for "Chess Training for Post-Beginners: A Basic Course in Positional Understanding" by Yaroslav Srokovski. I thought it might be better to get a positional understanding before tackling the subject of strategy. Not sure if that's the correct approach but let's see. Have you tried this book? It is my third book after 'Fundamental Chess Openings' by Sterren and 'Basic Chess' by Stean.

Very useful clip. I'll check out Nunn's book for sure. Studying Silman`s "How to reassess.." for the moment. That´s my level right now. I am eying Aagard but that is a couple of books away :-). My next book will be Johan Hellsten´s "Strategic Play". I believe that´s one level up from Silman but not at the level of Aagard. Sorry for the babbling. It´s "the-end-of-the-week- glass-of-wine-time" here :-)) Thanks again. Great clip! PS: again, your other clip with the 100-position-test is really great. I believe knowledge is one thing. But it´s also about translating it to real play.

I know you will be hesitant for many reasons to list the books you didn't like or didn't find helpful. But, would you be willing to list what other middlegame and strategy books you have read? Other people have chosen favorite books such as Reassess Your Chess by Jeremy Silman and I always wonder if they have read your favorite books and if you have had a chance to look at their favorites for comparison. You do not have to worry that I will never read the other books that are not your favorite, and I will not ask you to tell me which ones you think are the worst. But it would provide some helpful perspective if I knew what other books you have read, and what others you may have skimmed. Little things like that, coupled with what I believe are my strengths and weaknesses, help me to make the most of my limited practice time. Thanks in advance.

I have, and they are pretty good for you to detect your weakest areas, the chapters are very short, few examples for a certain theme every chapter, then you need to solve some exercises, the good thing about it is that once you failed a test you can later focus on that theme. Also some exercises are pretty tricky , you need to calculate a lot of variation and some of them have hidden resources. There is a LOT of work on those book, but I think they are worth it, however as I mentioned before the coverage is pretty short for each chapter, you will need to find some books to complement the material.

In the game we don't know what is the best move. I am unable to find the best move even while analyzing my game. Then I use engine to know the best move. Can you advice me to how to read THE MIDDLEGAME BY DR.M.EUWE & H.KRAMER. What is best middlegame book for my level. HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY GAME? HOW TO PREPARE FOR MY UPCOMING TOURNAMENT? ON WHICH ASCEPT SHOULD I FOCUS ON? (middlegame or endgame or opening) I can win over 1300, 1400 rated players. Sir can you tell what my short term and long term plan be? SIR PLEASE GUIDE ME BECAUSE I HAVE TOURNAMENT IN THREE DAYS Sir It would be a great honor if you guide me.

I have Nunn's book, but I found it hard to work with - but I'm just a 1300ish player. I think the book lacks a clear build-up - there are just random chapters and i found it hard to fit them in a context. Maybe I just work with the book in the wrong manner. Maybe I should give it another try.
