I hadn't thought of this when I was a kid but all of Ryoga's problems stem from his inability to accept his own shortcomings. He is effectively mad at Ranma for not waiting around for him indefinitely. All the hardships he faced after that were the result of his own inability to let go of a simple grudge and his own lousy sense of direction.

Yup Ryoga likes to find blame on others and whatever stuff instead of accepting his own flaws. His inability to let go of his grudges is his own undoing. I like Ryoga but I will not let him blame his “miserable life” on Ranma(my guy is clueless jerk but never malicious)

Ranma 1/2 started the year after Dragonball did(1986 and 1987). Rumiko herself had been fairly popular since Urusei Yatsura (1978), and then Maison Ikkoku (1980). She also wrote Inuyasha, and is still working today, a series called Mao.

One little correction: 1986 is specifically DBZ. Dragonball started in 1984. Of course, that’s admittedly really just a nitpick, and your point stands, since that still means the series are reasonably contemporary to each other. 😁

Plus as someone who watched the original its interesting to see the difference (not just in updated animation but i didn't realize how much filler there was, Ryoga didn't show up until episode 6 or 7! and this episode was stretched out to 2 episodes!)

This episode was very fun I honestly thought ryoga wouldve been lost the entire episode lol but thankfully he was not Umbrellas as a spinning top is a shockingly destructive weapon, the only other character i know who has umbrella as main weapon is probably kagura and maybe yatos in general from gintama but they use it more like a gun or a bat than a spinning top. The bandanas are a funny gag too, and the belt lmfaoo And that last bit... Rip akane's hair... 😮

The old anime had better fights animation and the hair cutting scene was more emotional, but the old anime was also 80% filler. The advantage of the remake is that it will stay close to the original canon, so it is basically like discovering Ranma 1/2 for the first time for people who haven't read the manga (aka most people).

Yeah! The Hibiki kid finally found his way to the remake, after all these years. Now things are getting serious. Well, kind of. I mean, it's still _Ranma 1/2,_ so... ya know. I don't know of another series that centered a cliffhanger ending around someone's hair getting cut, _and_ had everyone so on the edge of their seats for it. 😄 If there is one, I would be very surprised if it preceded _Ranma 1/2._

I'm not so sure about Akane's motives for turning down returning the book. On one hand, it gives Dr. Tofu a chance to see Kasumi, on the other hand, it might be too painful for her to to hear Kasumi's name come from his mouth. This show is very fun like ya threes alot of old and over done tropes but thats because it is from that time and they are still done well and the main gimmick you would think would get old quick but at least thus far and the main leads are progressively starting to develop there relationship already its great im slightly worried because I dont know how long this story is and it could stagnate but im not really watching for the story im watching for the goofy charchters and fun fights and as long as it countines to be creative ill enjoy it.

Kuno chased him around the corner and actually caught him after he turned. But i dunno if the 90s is the one true to manga or this remake lol. Ill just enjoy it for what it is. Still fun to compare them and see the changes though

Been waiting for the reaction :D Ryoga is one of the best characters and I'm pretty sure you will like him even more in the next ep :D Since we're getting only 12 (?) new eps, it'd be great if you would continue with the old anime from the point on they stop. They are rushing in this version a bit, so there are some very funny things missing, like Ryoga returning to the village with the boar while getting lost etc. Also the music in the OG is insanely good. But as a remake, this a very good one!

Ryoga Hibiki is Ranma's strongest rival in the entire series and the only one who Ranma acknowledges him as such. Ryoga is the only who manages to keep up with Ranma's growth as a martial artist and managed to beat him a few times.

@bumbayker Ryoga never beats Ranma in any fight in the series as far as I remember. He may have the upper hand at the beginning of the “breaking point” arc but still gets beaten even though that’s easily the closest of their battles. They’re basically like more likable versions of Goku and Vegeta, when it comes to martial arts.
