I find it extremely difficult to make games. Even more so 3D/open world games. I've been planning one for almost two years - it involves a lot of decisions in several 'areas', such as mechanics, designs, objects, etc. and everything is interrelated. It's a real engineering and study work with a lot of 'comings and goings', 'advances and retreats'. I don't even know if I'll be able to finish my prototype (and I'm talking about a mere prototype). It's extremely difficult to do everything at the same time. But, since I took on this without 'any commitment', it takes a huge weight off my shoulders.

What difficulty are you having with it?
@Ingo.McleanАй бұрын
@@samyam I mean the .unity files, but anyway. We use git/bitbucket and if someone even changes the order or the gameobjects in the hierarchy, it really throws us in a loop (different GUIDs to name one issue).
@samyamАй бұрын
@@Ingo.Mclean Good point, it does handle that for git, actually! This is the setting you'd wanna look for in Rider: Prefer UnityYamlMerge for merging YAML files But if you wanna keep using your existing git GUI (or CMD) you'll wanna look into UnityYAMLMerge aka Unity Smart Merge. It basically takes care of merging scene files and prefabs for you, you can even set up rules on what's "close enough" to not be a change (for serialized floating-point values used in for instance, the transform) Unfortunately it's not possible to use UntiyYAMLMerge on GitHub Desktop without having to use some commands, as far as I'm aware. But alternative clients like Git Fork can easily be set up to use it automatically.

I tried to keep it simple for the video to not make it overly technical. There was a reply to another comment by @lockyaw which I can't find, but will paste here as it describes in more detail the differences Rider offers: "... Rider is very competent at working with Unity and Unreal; Visual Studio is not, even with the module installed. It's aware that MonoBehaviour methods like Update/FixedUpdate/LateUpdate run often, Visual Studio is not because these methods aren't called directly in C#. It knows of performance tricks specific to Unity and Unreal, in Unity's case that means using gameObject.CompareTag(x) instead of gameObject.tag == x or transform.SetParent(y) instead of transform.parent = y. It's aware that Unity's nullcheck is special and treats it as such; it won't suggest you use a Null-conditional Operator or Null-coalescing Operator on UnityEngine.Objects. It's aware of Unity's Physics NonAlloc functions and has code hints to convert between the two. It knows that you shouldn't initialize MonoBehaviour and ScriptableObject using new(), and provides quick fixes to use Instantiate or AddComponent instead. It auto-completes Unity strings, such as scene-names, tags, layers, shader keywords, animations, inputs, etc. Stuff where you have no choice but to do string-based lookup. Then when you change the name of one, it'll show a warning. It has built-in links to the Unity and Unreal documentation; it doesn't just show the XML documentation comments. If you use the [Tooltip] attribute in Unity, it'll treat it as XML documentation when hovering over it unless you have explicit XML documentation. Colors defined using Unity's Color, Color32, HSVToRGB have a preview with that color in it. It's got great integration and debugging for UnityEvents. It can run Unity's Unit and more important Unity Tests without having to switch back to Unity. It's got code templates, warnings, code fixes, etc. for Unity Entities and Jobs/Burst. And that's just the C# coding! Rider also has built-in support for Unity's shader languages. Mind you, some of these are available if you use JetBrains' Resharper plugin in Visual Studio too, but that's priced almost equal to Rider itself, and at that point why not just use Rider, which has got it natively built-in and is (usually) faster." github.com/JetBrains/resharper-unity/wiki In the video she shows some of this too, like the CompareTag, or how if you rename a serialized field in Rider it automatically adds the `FormerlySerializedAsAttribute` and when you do it with a class it uses `UnityEngine.Scripting.APIUpdating.MovedFromAttribute` " I think you should just try it and see if you like it, it's free to try after all! :)

By your licenses, you should not distribute those libraries for 3rd-parties, especially not into AIs what will be trained on them, but even if not, you shouldn't. You only paid for using it yourself, not the AI. It is a giant very dark gray area. But without the AI crap, Rider is the best IDE for game dev, hands down.

Been using VS for over 10 years, if you know how it works it can do most what rider does and 100% free. I'm not saying rider is bad, its just gonna take some money if you want to take your work serious and make money out of it. The real question here is if rider would benefit the "extra features " over VS for its money I would say no. Also the windows crash been used in this video is bullshit, windows is known to be unstable and crash from time to time, if you want less crashes just develop in Linux instead, rider is not giving any guarantee to not let your windows crash. I clearly said free for non-commercial use, you don't even need a credit card to try it. Not dishonest :)
@EdngravyАй бұрын
@samyam No one is disputing that you're talking about the free version. It is not no strings attached. Dishonest :)
@walterh2113Ай бұрын
Well, if we're gonna be pedantic like that... ALL software has strings attached by that logic. Same goes for Rider's competitors, VS Code and Visual Studio. So what exactly is your point? Even FOSS have a license that limit what you can and can't do with the software. (GPL) Strings Attached: Any software derived from GPL-licensed software must also be released under the GPL (copyleft). (MIT) Strings Attached: A copy of the license must accompany the distributed software. JetBrains Non-Commercial: Only Non-Commercial Use, and must have data sharing enabled. JetBrains EAP: Must have data sharing enabled
@EdngravyАй бұрын
@@walterh2113 No. You can freely opt out of all telemetry/data sharing on VS code. And no, Microsoft won't try to bill you for using VS code to make your game if it becomes a hit. So how is this the same?

*No strings attached! Non-commercial license that has data collection.
