As usual love your review. Actually there is a more expensive grinder out there... the Ceado E37Z hero, which I happen to own. If somehow you can get your hands on one. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! do a review and a comparison with the weber. I feel theres still an edge to the Ceado due to the very specific burr set it has but I'm not a professional as you

Just curious Lance did your EG-1 come with a free "patina" because my machine came with a nice sized ding right on the bean hopper for all to see. Which Weber Workshops explained the machine was meant to patina. Not to mention they just tossed my Ultra burrs in the box to bounce around like a a $450 pinball....

At that price it just should not stall and need to be fed slowly, even if it is only sometimes. Lance doesn't mind, but I would not be happy.

Dude thank you for how much effort and thought you put into this and all your work, it def doesn’t go unnoticed. As for the next high end grinder I buy, it must have the anti static tech that the ode gen 2 has, that changed the game imo. The ode does a fantastic job of eliminating static and I can only assume that many will follow suit in the following year or so. Also I love you too lance
@0whitestone

I agree on both points, Lance's dedication is awesome. The effort just to source, swap and experiment with all of those burr sets makes me exhausted lol And that Ode Gen 2 (I have one and it's really great!) is a game changer IMO. I don't RDT at all with it and have no issues with static or retention and it's using a old technology that been in hair dryers for awhile. I'm sure there's some design or engineering challenges, but one that I think would totally be worth it to fit on as future updates to other grinders, or put into new ones, or course.

Just so you are aware, you're explanation of the motor is partially incorrect. The stalling is a torque problem and likely not a power problem. When an electric motor stalls, its prone to damage so the controller is probably cutting it out before it hits the stall torque. They should have used a higher stall torque motor. You shouldn't have to trickle feed a 3k+ titan class grinder. Period.
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
Hmmmm.... how come the P100 never stalls but has a similar motor? It peaks at 1300 w on 220v and this one at 1540 w at 220v. Higher steady state power. Bigger rating altogether. P100 doesn't have the same controller, though, and never stalls.
@wadeduvall7026
@wadeduvall7026 Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick Power = Torque x RPM, so you can generally avoid hitting the stall torque by reducing RPMs. P100 can go as low as 200 RPM vs the EG1 which seems to only go to 500 RPM; this could be the reason it doesn't stall. It could also be a hyperconserative cutoff by Lyn (true stall should be avoided as it will overheat the motor) but my guess is the RPMs.

I found that the EG1 is way less likely to stall once you set to 700rpm plus. It could be the super low rpm that is causing you the occasional issue Lance. I also wouldn't recommend anyone going to "Max" as the internal wipers degrade quickly, there is no reason to go there anyway. I really enjoy this grinder but... I own a V1 & when the oak platen was released I reached out to Weber asking if they would offer a special price for previous owners. They said no. The reason I asked is because the finish on the original metal ring gets rubbed off by the shaker. It leaves a bit of dry taste in the mouth when Weber clearly notice an issue, release an update & offer zero to previous customers, especially at this price point.

This costs too much to stale. Period. No excuses. I know, I know, the machine is absolutely beautiful, we want to like it. But let's be brutally honest here, there is no reason to be polite with a machine costing that much. Particularly now that there is so much competition out there. And unfortunately it goes with Weber reputation: they put too much products out there without full testing. It goes back to the HG-1, which so many people had issues with. This is the third iteration of the EG-1. Come on. Anybody who is in this to the point of watching Lance Hedrick videos is playing with light roasts, or exclusively brewing light to medium-ish roasts. They should have found this issue during development phase and fixed it before release.

Great review. The part where you say "someone will probably comment below the name of this plug", without looking it up but just as someone that worked in an AV rental/production shop where the staff commonly called parts by their technical name we always referred to them as IEC plugs. Outside of that environment in our industry they are colloquially called D plugs/cables. (I'm sure IEC is a naming convention and there are actually other modifiers with numbers and letters for specific variations)

The fact that the EG1 and the KEY both stop with light roast is an issue and they have to work on it especially at the price they ask. Personally I would take the P100 it is lower in price and has a better motor that does not change RPM while grinding
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
Perhaps you didn't hear me correctly. The motor in the EG1 is actually a higher rated motor than p100. There is a controller holding back the power. The max on the p100 is like 1300, I believe. The max for eg1 is 1540. They just have a massive limiter on it, which is why I spent so much time talking about it. Also, again, I ONLY brew ultra light roast. I never have issues with slow feed and only very rarely with fast feed (maybe 6 times since getting it in April. Cheers

@@LanceHedrick I think the design of EG1 has a shaft which steal some power from the motor. However, leaving numbers aside,I have tried the P100 for over a month and never stoped even once light roast espresso. Which my KEY always do.. i thing it is an issue that needs to be resolved from weber without giving alternative solutions such as slow feeding I have tried slow feeding and I think it is not the solution it has two downside: 1-workflow will be much worse 2- constancy will suffer especially for espresso
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
I agree it should be resolved. My point is the p100 doesnt have the limiter on it this does. I could be a 100HP motor on the eg1 and it will stall if I put a massive limiter. The power is there. Weber jsut has it locked. I'm hoping the next iteration will unlock more power.

It’s just so good and agreed with everything you’ve mentioned. Mine has stalled twice in that time, I tend to just dump the beans and no feed unless I have the day off and have time to play. I would say the stalling in a no issues for me, I’ve had the same happen with other grinders as well

I'm so thankful for you. I received my EG1 today and took it for a spin. All of my shots were WAY too fast, but if I tightened the grinder up, I heard what sounded like burrs rubbing. I thought my $4,000 grinder had to be defective. But Lance, you saved the day. I learned to go beyond my sound comfort level.....and found where the espresso grind was hiding. Thank you sir.

Lance, thank you for this wonderful review. I am curious if you've ever tried or would recommend the Ceado E37Z Hero, which is actually more expensive than this Weber. Obviously, cost does not always equal quality, but I am interested in why there is such a dearth of information on the Ceado, especially in comparison to the Weber. Thanks

Given some customers are unhappy with Weber’s customer service and the simplicity and price of Lagom P100 (+ the larger burrs), I think the Lagom takes the crown as the best grinder in the market. Over $1000 less than the EG1 and it can grind through beans at whatever RPM without stumbling like the EG1

I can't speak to this definitively but what I can say is 1) There have been complaints with all "end game grinder" companies including option o 2) bigger burrs doesn't mean better a priori I'm currently trying to get a p100 so I can better understand it.

What’s the best espresso grinder? I have a Rocket Fausto touch and a Rocket Cincuantotto. I’ve just installed a flow control kit and am single dosing. I’m thinking of selling the Fausto to buy something else. Or should I change the burrs? I’m a home brewer that brews espressos. I’ve been using light roast, but am learning and geeking out. It’s a hobby for me. Thanks in advance.

This thing is a work of art. I would think the experience of using it would be quite rewarding. It seems a bit large in that, at 18 inches in height, it would not fit on many people’s countertops that have cabinets overhead. I wish they made a slightly smaller version; still, wow, this is so nice. By the way, if you play this video at 1.5 playback speed it does mimic if you had been drinking all this coffee…

500 RPM as the lowest... but is that the motor RPM or the burr RPM? The manual really isn't clear on that. There's been a small movement of "1 revolution per second (60 RPM) for your burrs is ideal" so it feels like 500 RPM is the motor and there is a gearbox converting that into decent torque at the burr and the burr RPM will be necessarily lower. If so, how much of a step down? If not... what's up with the other adjustable RPM grinders getting down so much lower in their RPMs? edit: lol, of course I ask right as I'm getting to 31:45 in the video (absolutely excellent points!), although still curious about what the reported number means, motor or burr RPM

Please tell me what is the difference in grinding quality between a "good manual coffee grinder" and a "good electric coffee grinder" (both "under ~$500" budget) for filter coffee? I'm thinking of buying a manual coffee grinder, but I'm afraid that the grinding quality will be worse than an electric coffee grinder. P.s. An electric coffee grinder is inconvenient because I make 1 or 2 cups of coffee a day in an Aeropress (12-15 grams of coffee) and I often change coffee, often experimenting with the grind size. But at the same time, I am ready to endure inconvenience for the sake of a better quality of grinding because I drink coffee to enjoy the versatility of taste (not for the sake of caffeine).

Yes, but they have a stripped down version of the same grinder. That's my point. The grinder is $3,000 (nautilus). The same grinder decked out is $10k. To me, the cost of the grinder is $3k, since that is what the base model is. But, I am wrong. There are a couple of base models people have posted that are well above EG1, like the Caedo I mentioned above.

Amazing review, just a quick question - in the chart, you have SSP LU (which I'm assuming is low uniformity), then go on to talk about the HUs. God bless SSP for the most confusing naming in coffee, but I'm curious if they are indeed the HUs since I think in a previous video you talked about preferring the MPs for filter over the HUs for espresso. Mostly I'm curious since the geometry seems to be the basis for the Weber ULF. Whew!
@LanceHedrick
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
Ok. So. HU on the 64 is not super unimodal style. The HU on the 80mm and on the 98mm IS the super unimodal. So, HU is the gold set of burrs here. THey are literally the same exact geometry to the ULF. SO, ULF=HU in the 80mm size. The unimodal style at 64mm is MP. NOT HU. Hope that makes sense haha

I’m very late to this so I don’t really expect an answer but I would be curious about how multipurpose this grinder is. And I know obviously very but I’m thinking in terms of this is your only grinder you have 3 sets of burrs for it or something along those lines. How smooth would the process be to swap out the burrs maybe 2-3 times a day depending on what type of coffee you want to make (E.g. a morning espresso, an afternoon pour-over). Would just be interested if the process is so refined that the effort required is so minimal that its no hassle and would be a super viable option. Just a stupid nit picky thought I have.

@@LanceHedrick 64mm Grinders are hyper saturated right now and seem to be the target for the consumer market. I'd like to see innovation in the 80mm space myself. I do love my Orbit, although the releases have been absolutely abysmal from a manufacturing standpoint. With 500 Eclipse editions and only 60 released in the last four months I hope Acaia is able to ramp up production to a sustainable level. With the other options that exist, I wouldn't recommend waiting for one if you can get your hands on a nice P64 unless you absolutely love the design.

@jauntus1
@jauntus1 Жыл бұрын
I'm struggling with the concept of the Orbit's being grind by weight but also single dose? You're paying for the grind by weight tech, paying for low retention/low tolerances in build and chamber, but why have grind-by-weight without a hopper? You end up weighing your beans before anyway. I suppose most home users that would spend this kind of money would at least brew different ways and maybe use a hopper for the bag of beans they buy and leverage the grind by weight and tight tolerances to switch brew methods for the same beans more seamlessly.
@MWSJoey
@MWSJoey Жыл бұрын
@@jauntus1 The orbit cost me $1350. Without the scale it's a solid single dose, variable RPM, 64mm grinder. P64 costs ~$1600 so the Orbit actually comes in with a lower initial cost than the P64. Add in the scale for $200 and the price of the two grinders are arguable very close together with the Orbit offering more features. Now that's also with Mazzer 33M in the orbit vs. SSP burrs in the P64 so if you purchase the Orbit and SSP burrs you land yourself right at the same P64 price point but without GBW. I think both grinders are solid choices and have only used the GBW like 3 times on my orbit. It is nice that the GBW isn't integrated into the grinder and a Lunar serves multiple purposes. They do plan on releasing a hopper at a later date, but GBW isn't for everyone and is a very niche feature to have.
