My favorite LMM is the Blue Castle. Last year I read the Emily books, and really enjoyed the first and second books, and was quite disappointed with the third book. All I'll say is that after reading the third book, I read more about LMM and the young adult life of Emily has some similarities to LMM.

I've just stumbled across this and was so glad to see it. I've read the Anne books, the Emily books, the two Pat books, and _The Blue Castle,_ but I hadn't known too much about her other books (only that they existed). My favorites might be _The Blue Castle,_ _Anne of the Island,_ _Anne's House of Dreams,_ and _Rilla of Ingleside._ That said, I find several characters in the Emily and Pat books delightful, as well; I just have some nitpicks about their books overall, so they don't make my list of favorites. Thank you so much for posting this so I can consider some additional L.M. Montgomery titles to add to my list. (Also, and this is so random, the sound of your handling of the books, opening them and gently turning the pages, was somehow so satisfying! I'm not normally one for ASMR, but it just really struck me.)

I can't make myself read Rilla of Ingleside anymore. It's so good, but I cried so hard. It is so heartbreaking after getting so attached to all of the characters. I think the only other time I cried so hard in a book was in Little Women when Beth dies.

I feel your pain when it comes to Rilla. I read the series for the first time in high school. I remember staying up late one night to read with my book light and I had to stifle my sobs because I shared a room with my sister and she was sleeping. I read so many LM Montgomery books in high school but haven't since. Seeing this definitely makes me want to reread them all!

I read someplace that “Rilla of Ingleside” is considered to be a unique and significant novel because it’s one of the few WWI books written from the perspective of what things were like in Canada during that war and how our citizens handled it. Neat, huh?

I just re-read Anne of GG and Anne of Avonlea last year.... the first is definitely in my top ten books of all time. I also really really love Rilla of Ingleside. It's such a beautiful, funny, sad depiction of a girl growing into womanhood. I also really love the Story Girl series - I read it as a teenager when I wanted more "Anne" in my life, and that was a nice substitute. I just got in the mail a biography of LM Montgomery that was recommended to me a long time ago. It's The Gift of Wings by Mary Henley Rubio. I'm really looking forward to reading it - maybe that's a biography you can try if you didn't like the previous one you read.

After writing a full comment, everything I had written disappeared! In summary, I have read all of LMM’s fictional works. When I was in college, I was an English major. The great majority of contemporary novels (i.e., the last 100 years) take a very pessimistic viewpoint of reality. LMM is a rare exception. There are two other authors whom I highly recommend who are uplifting: Barbara Pym and Anthony Trollope.

Anne of Green Gables always makes my favorite list as number one. The journals are wonderful and give a great look not only into her life but life during that time period. Yes, the journals do get darker and the last one is hard to read. If you have not been to Prince Edward Island you must go. We drove all the way from Texas to PEI. It was a wonderful time and the island is beautiful.

Thank you so much for the video. This year, I'll start my LM Montgomery journey, as I am from Germany and none of her books are typically read to or by children. Though I already have the feeling that that has to be changed as I hear only amazing things about all of her stories. Looking into all the editions, I also decided to buy the Tundra editions; they are absolutely beautiful! Two of the Anne books, however, I had to buy in a different design as unfortunately not all of them were available here. I was lucky enough that the Emily books and the Story Girl books were in stock, so I immediately purchased them! But I am going to save your video, as I love hearing people talk about their favourite stories so much. Your joy is an absolute delight! All the best.

I’m a year late to this commenting party but want to chime in when I find LMM lovers! Does is bother anyone else that the Anne books are invariably relegated to the children’s sections in libraries and book stores? I think they’re best appreciated when the reader is at least sixteen years old. My favourite LMM books are The Blue Castle, Jane of Lantern Hill, A Tangled Web, Anne of Windy Poplars and Rilla Ingleside.
@ChantelReadsAllDay

All of Montgomery's books I've read as an adult and while I wish I would have read them when I was younger I don't think I would have appreciated them like I have an adult.
@WBCRO
@WBCRO 21 күн бұрын
@@ChantelReadsAllDay I understand that. I first tried reading Anne of Green Gables when I was eleven years old and, even though I had above average reading skills, I didn’t really appreciate it and gave up on it about halfway through. I returned to it one summer in high school and I loved it and voraciously read several more Anne books that summer. As the old saying goes, timing is everything. I think many children miss out on Anne - especially here in Canada (I live in NB) - because they “just watch the Anne movies instead” or because it’s presented as being aimed for younger children. Sorry! Rant over! I believe literacy is vital and that LMM’s works are still relevant today.

Oh, I hated Rilla of Ingleside the first time I read it. Despised it. Thought Rilla was a huge brat and just didn't enjoy her. But then when I reread it, it became one of my favorites of the whole series!!! That line... I think it was in that one where Anne says, "At least I didn't have to urge him to go" (or was that Rainbow Valley? I can't remember). That broke me and made me cheer at the same time. It was like the Anne equivalent to Mrs. Weasley screaming "Not my daughter..." Yeah. You go, Anne! The Blue Castle is one of my faves, too. It reminds me of The Harvester by Gene Stratton-Porter. The kind of romance you don't mind because it's just so genuine and has more to it than fluttering hearts and gagging syrupy blechiness. Ahem. I liked it so much that I even wrote a short story dreaming up how LM Montgomery could have come up with the idea for her name. The same blog post has how I imagine Agatha Christie coming up with Poirot. And some other thing. OH!!! IT hink it's Austen and Persuasion--Sophy Croft and calm waters... that comment. YEah. It was fun. I have a couple of different Anne sets as well and then random others. If I could buy any set at all, it would probably be the Juniper set with the Hat that runs across the spines. Love that set. Or if the Ellie McKay set came in hardback! That would be nice. Still need to get Montgomery's Journals for this year's book. I need to read LOTS of montgomery this year!

Please don’t give up on Anne! Anne of Avonlea - the second Anne book - is great and the series stays strong throughout. Of all of the Anne books, I think Anne of Ingleside is my least favourite and that’s just because it focuses more on the scrapes and challenges of her children rather than on Anne herself.

I love the Tundra editions as well! That would bother me as well to not have matching books. I wonder why they chose to not make the first book in that edition. 🤔 I was beginning to wonder if Emily's Quest was in the Tundra edition. I can't seem to find it, but I have the other 2 in the Tundra edition. This bothers me that I don't have the complete set in this edition. Haha If you ever see it, let me know. I wouldn't be able to buy it fast enough. 😂 My library had a book sale in October and I found House of Dreams The Life of L.M. Montgomery there, but haven't read it yet.
