If the Macbook Air M2 actually had reasonable pricing in my country, it would have been my favorite. But right now, with that price, a 16/512 configuration is way too close to the 14inch Pro so its almost pointless to get the Air. If the 12inch comes out with reasonable pricing, that would be my dream laptop.

I've got the exact same spec, and it is without a doubt my favourite laptop ever. The perfect balance of portability and power for my workflow, and even some gaming...okay a lot of gaming. Battery life has honestly been great for me, a massive upgrade from the 13" Intel Macs I used to own, and miles ahead of any Windows laptop I have owned as well. It stays cool and quiet no matter what I throw at it, and that screen is just too good.

While Luke is pleading for a 15 MacBook, I want a resurrected 12in MacBook with Apple Silicone. This was my perfect on the go form factor and loved it! I bought this machine knowing it was slow because I loved the form factor so much but in the end it was just too painfully slow to use even part time on the go. It was an AMAZING concept and was a machine ahead of it's time and probably the straw that broke the camels back in the Apple and Intel relationship. It was a great computer for web browsing, watching youtube, writing emails, office, etc. But the second you did anything outside of that it was painfully slow. In theory the 2017 should have been faster than the 2015 MacBook Air, but it was actually slower due to thermal throttling. Intel and the keyboard killed that machine. The thermal envelope of Apple Silicone is at a point that this machine could be easily revived by Apple. A full MacBook the size of a 12in iPad when closed was a commuter's dream. Please Apple, bring the 12in MacBook back. That or just fix the 12in iPad pro to include a MacOS mode when docked with a keyboard and mouse. It would be a game changer and compete toe to toe with a Surface Pro 8.

Back in 2016 I was curious and got a 12” MacBook as a secondary computer to give it a shot. It was awful, I felt like I was going to snap it every 2 second and felt more like a toy than a computer. After 4 months I had GPU failure and not to mention the computer always ran hot, which was expected on how thin and small it is. Making it the first Mac I have ever had an issue with. Please Apple never bring back this monstrosity of a ‘computer’!

@@quervy4097 That's why I want it with new guts, a new keyboard, and a second port. Totally doable today with Apple Silicone without the heat. Mine was a 2017 and was still horrible. I had the lone usb-c port replaced and the keyboard replaced under AppleCare once in the year and a half I owned it. The concept and package of this computer was a good idea, but at the time it was piss poor execution. No one would ever want it back in that form. A refined second gen would be dope.

I think it's worth noting that one of the other advantages of running the fans slower besides it making for a quieter machine is battery life. On a battery powered device it makes sense to me that they're allowing the SoC to stay hotter instead of ramping up the fans to aim for a cooler system chewing energy in the background.

Most people with regular workflows aren't hardcore video editors and do not require Pro models or even a mid range model like the 15 inch rumours you are referring too. Let me tell you the best in class use case. Back in 2015 I bought an Intel Macbook pro 15 inch on an in store deal for approx 1950. Back then, I needed portability due to the way the tech world was with office work and client visits. in 2020 we had the pandemic, and the world changed where we could work remotely, in fact it was encouraged. All of a sudden I could comfortably get by with having desktop. I then sold my 2015 Intel Macbook pro for 500 to a DJ. I bought an M1 Mac Mini for 550 and a used like new 32 inch AOC 4k monitor for 350. I had vouchers from work on Amazon as a bonus and used that to buy a Keychron keyboard, a Logitech MX Master and a Dprofy soundbar. Honestly, I have no intention to change for a good while no matter how many events Apple has. That is how you get the optimum out of Apple without spending too much. I am a Product Designer, and I am pro already Apple - just ask my salary. Please don't spend money you don't have to.

I absolutely love my 14" Macbook pro but there are many, many people who want a larger display than can be had on the current MacBook Air but don't need more power and don't want to pay at least $2500 for the 16" model. Pretty much every PC manufacturer offers low and mid-range 15" laptops that are reasonably priced. For administrative professionals, students, and professors at the college where I work, a 15" MacBook or MacBook Air for about $1500 would sell like crazy.

The M2 Air, with the same spec as the entry 14” M1 Pro, is only $300 cheaper. For that you loose the min LED screen, and the card reader, and Thunderbolt 4 and one port and the HDMI port and better speakers. So yes, $300 less, but is that a bargain? Or does that mean that you should not buy any model other than the base model of any Mac on sale today?

My oldest was needing a new laptop for college as his Alienware won't last two classes without charging. He will also be taking more CS classes as well plus labs being able to get 8 to 10 hours of basic use was a must. After evaluating everything a base 14" (I think they got 4 of them) showed up at my local Apple store last Friday. Rather than waiting I ordered it immediately for pickup the next day. I have a 16" M1 Pro but from what everything I have seen the base chip will be more than powerful enough for him and the base has slightly better battery life. The screen, the ports for presentations etc... Now that we have it I have to say the form factor on the 14" is quite nice. Don't get me wrong I love the screen and battery on my 16" but... The bottom line was that configuring the M2 Air with 16GB and 512GB of memory brought it quite close the the base 14"... to me the screen and ports alone were worth the extra $$$. As some of my other sons are wanting to move to MacBooks as well, so I'm definitely watching your videos and a few others daily to keep abreast of the changes. Thank you for doing the work so I don't have to!!! :)

After the update my external monitor goes "black" every 30-40 seconds, and then comes back on after 2 secs. I've rebuilt several times, traded out monitors, and tried booting into safe mode. Nothing worked. It just goes to show that even the best hardware can be hobbled by crappy software. Besides this issue, love this thing.

14' M1 Pro owner here. I've used an iPad Pro, Windows desktop, Windows laptop and this is by far the best computer experience I've ever had. The performance is on par and perhaps exceeds my Ryzen 3600 desktop but it operates silently and is (of course) portable. Things get very hot in Italy where I live and this computer has not exceeded 55°C for me. I'm not a video editor, I do tutoring and voice over (Adobe Audition) but I have installed DaVinci Resolve and when I do eventually edit a video I'll be curious to see how it performs for my workload. With regards to the M2 Air, ports are still an issue for me. My M1 Pro currently has all three ports occupied - one for my audio interface, one for my wired mouse (bluetooth is not latency-free and you're wrong if you think that) and one for my displayport monitor (HDMI has been very finicky for me). My audio interface (Audient iD4 II) seems to require power that the dongle can't supply, meaning that I need to plug it in directly, which is what I would do anyway to ensure the highest reliability for when I do voice over work. This means that if I were to use a MB Air I'd have to either use a bluetooth mouse (no thanks), or work without an external monitor, compromising my productivity.

You're kinda dropping the ball on some of these points: - You give us the impression apple is preferring low fan noise over core temps, as opposed to intel Macs. They however did the exact same thing on intel Macs. The difference is that is that the Mx machines manage to remain under throttling temperatures with the fans at only half speed. Intel Macs run hotter by default and couldn't get away with this. They delayed ramping up the fans on the intel Macs as late as possible as well though. Apple doesn't care about core temps. - After ranting about high core temps, you then go on to praise the fanless Mx MacBooks, which also let their core temps rise to the max, but then manage the temps by dropping clock speeds. Come on man, you can't have it both ways.

I am absolutely in love with it. I use it for 2-3 hours everyday after work and I take it with me everywhere. I used to keep to docked with a Dell U2718Q and it looks incredible. 2. I purchased a Macbook Pro 14 inch Space Grey base that is pretty much brand new for $1500 (7 cycles) a few days ago. I have permanently docked this and use this solely as my desktop. I only undock it if I need to hook up to tv or show someone something. I also work off this computer as I use teams/outlook/excel a lot and the better webcam and display is good for me. I want the M2 Macbook Air 16gb/1 TB and don't know which one to replace. Should I sell the M1 Space Grey Air or the 14 inch Macbook Pro? they both will go for over $1000 on eBay so it wouldn't be much to upgrade to an M2 Air 16gb/1tb cofiguration. Should I sell my Pro on eBay and use the money to buy the M2 Macbook Air that will be my new stationary docked computer? or should I sell the M1 Air and use the M2 Macbook Air as my stationary docked computer? I love everything about the 14 inch Macbook Pro except the way its physically big and bulky but if I keep it docked it shouldn't matter? I use my computers for microsoft office, facebook, youtube, whatsapp, mail, light gaming, etc. I do not video edit or do anything crazy other than fortnite and have maybe 7-8 excel workbooks open at once that are massive with teams and outlook running

I find it a bit infuriating to know a mega powerful computer is being handicapped by the mega limited IO & zero options. My MOTU FW goes into the other socket with the right adapters. with the right hub/adapters you can still plug everything you want, for a price of course. it's a question of comfort; not a question of not being able to do the thing. absolutely not a deal breaker anyway.

Honestly, what I think would happen with the 15" MacBook is that, since it would come out next year, it might as well have an M3/M3 Pro chip. I think that since Apple makes their own silicon now, the chip refreshes would be more uniform and would come out on time once or twice a year.

My ideal laptop would be an 11"inch air with M2, I have an early 2014 MacBook Air 11" that I got back when I was in college and I still really love that laptop, it's so easy to fit on flight tables, coffee shop tables, anywhere! And imagine that with the speed and power of M2, you can also always connect it to a bigger screen if you want more screen real-estate, specially like me if you are a video editor

I'd like to see them do a new Macbook (air?) with a 12.5" screen in the new-style case. Case would be maybe 1/10" deeper than the 12" Macbook, and weigh a bit more than the 12", but less than the 11", roughly 2.1 pounds. Could probably do a 12" screen with narrow bezels in something not much wider/deeper than your 11", 1.8, maybe 2 pounds.

I went this route. You won't regret it. At least not doing AFTER the release of Apple Silicone. I had a 2010 Mac Pro and then I decided to change it up and keep a heavy duty laptop docked which was my 2019 16in that I bought on day one! I even returned canceled the 15in I ordered the week before as it was a surprise launch! As MacBooks got faster and lack of options from Apple on the desktop front, I figured a heavy duty laptop on my desk would be nice and give me the ability to do heavy work on the road for extended periods with this machine. I Had a smaller 12in 2017 MacBook for quick trips and the ability to use a second Mac for multitasking and emergency recovery. Covid changed this thinking and I stopped all traveling and commuting. I pulled the 2010 Mac Pro out of retirement in March 2020 and put it back on the desk with enjoyment. With all the time at home I decided go big and go home, knowing how well my 2010 Mac Pro served me over the years and bought the 2019 in May 2020. Then Apple announced Apple Silicone in June! BUMMER!!! I still don't regret my Mac Pro and it can be upgraded as cost of parts come down. That can't be said for most Macs! I love it. I've also found it can handle several home server functions since it isn't shut down and is on my network 24/7. Example: Time Machine backups VIA by direct attached Drobo drive pack setup on my Mac Pro to be seen as a NAS. No more individual portable hard drives for backups! It handles the Time Machine overhead no problem. It also handles home Plex server work with the folders attached directly to my Apple Music and Apple TV folders. The laptops backup to it over the network like a boss. I've kept the both the 2019s because it's the last of intel, but replaced the 2017 that couldn't keep up with anything and bought a 14in MBP, and it's the best MacBook since the Unibody MacBook Pro. It hangs with my $5000 Mac Pro! But the ability to have a primary desktop when working with heavy workloads is clutch. My biggest concern for the future of the Mac and the Mac Pro is the lack of Intel Virtual Machine support and the possible lack of future intel support. While my 14in MacBook does have an ARM version of Windows installed. Not all x64 or x86 Windows Apps function as designed. But as the owner of a 16in you would know if this workload applies to you by now.

@@deenot4878 for a 2012, I'd suggest one with 16 gigs of RAM, Since it won't benefit from more AT ALL, and a 1 TB SSD. This will be good for LIGHT usage. the whole computer aint that powerful, so it wouldn't matter to spend more. For the macbook air, get it with 16 gigs of RAM, I own one with 8, and I frequently run out of it. I myself run a lot of ram and cpu heavy applications, so I would benefit with more RAM, and everyone else will too. DO NOT spend extra money for apple's built in storage, if you need to, then go up too half a TB, but from then, get an external ssd with thunderbolt. you can even make a diy nvme pcie ssd. CHeck out tutorials on how to make a diy ssd if you really care about storage.

It constantly is throwing up messages complaining that I'm out of RAM left and that I need to close applications!! This seems to be due to having a lot of web pages open at once. But honestly, it happens when I have less than a dozen web pages open!! I don't ever remember any MacBook Pro or any Mac for that matter that that generated so many memory errors. I run the Free Up RAM utility on CleanMyMac and it doesn't help. I still get the messages, constantly. Any thoughts?

You get much more screen space on the MacBook Pro 14" as you would expect, because of higher pixel depth. The MacBook Pro has 254 pixels per inch. The Air M2 has only 224. Together with the increased dimension this leads to a significantly higher resolution in the MacBook Pro 14" of 3024-by-1964 versus 2560-by-1664 in the Air M2.

I love that Apple runs the cores hot and keeps the computer quiet. They're rated for that kind of temperature, and a very hypothetical reduction in lifetime of the board and processor is more than likely negated by the computer being entirely outdated if that were to happen some distant time in the future.

I dunno, those machines serve different purposes for different niches. Which is 'better' depends on what you want. As for me, there's no way I'm giving up that Mini-LED screen on my workstation unless it's for something that's even better in terms of brightness and colour accuracy. But, at the same time, I can see wanting a small, light, all-day battery life Macbook for everyday carry when I'm not doing heavy crunching on 4K HDR videos. The right tool for the right job.

3:45 This problem was also present in intel macbooks, in particular the airs. I solved it by installing macfancontrol, and commanding the fans to turn on when they reach 60 degrees celsius. I get the feeling that it's a (terrible) software problem, and that even Apple still has it, despite the years.

Besides marketing, there is one use case that really does benefit from silence at all costs: audio. PCs have been bad at audio because of ASIO being inferior to CoreAudio, RPC latencies in drivers, and in general the Windows kernel not really made with audio in mind (let alone Linux....). But one other thing that's often overlooked is noise. You do audio on a PC laptop, and every time the fans start spinning at unusably loud levels when you're in the middle of mixing (or worse, recording) a quiet part. Macs don't do that, and people doing audio buy Macs because they know they won't do that. If they can afford or justify them anymore, that is...

@@deeomayall I agree that noise is a problem, especially in certain sectors, but I believe in the idea that it should be up to the user to configure this. Hopefully Apple will integrate fan profiles into their OS in the future, without having to use a third party solution. At least, a cpu at 100 degrees celsius, I do not see it viable in time.

intel CPU can go to 105/110°C before having problems; if they stay within specs then what exactly is the issue? Yes they were cutting it close because they were inneficient but having a fighter jet next to you when you work is not a good experience. If the CPU doesn't throttle and stays within thermal limits then I don't see a reason to push the fans. Old intel laptops had the problem that even with the fans full speed; it still throttled. it will not happen here.
