As someone who prefers either deeper pinks or earthy ones, I found it very interesting to see how you use your bright ones. I generally use my dark pinks for mixing and one of my favourite combinations is quinacridone fuchsia with phthalo turquoise, it makes the most wonderful, deep, moody, inky blues, and when I put more water it greys out beautifully. I am definitely going to experiment more with my shell pink after seeing this video.

That sounds like a lovely combo! Glad you enjoyed!

I had to stop what I was doing and mix with you. So true about bright rose being most vibrant. I love the neutral it makes with cascade green. Also love soft color made with Naples yellow. Bright rose and Nickel Azo is gorgeous. Even ultramarine with bright rose is more dynamic. I only have green gold in Qor so it pushed rose away and looks dynamic but doesn’t mix. Ha. I mixed lots of colors and I love getting the really bright colors and the soft and neutrals. Thanks for sharing this video. It was helpful and so fun!

That's a great idea, the mixthaton! If you mix bright rose and green gold in your palette the rose will eventually succumb ;) Glad you enjoyed!

Yes! Shell Pink! I had been saying that I think it is becoming a permanent resident in my palette. I can't believe how much I use it. I have Holbein's. I also like to create the "muddiness" you described with DS grey titanium when I want more granulation. A happy mixing discovery I made was DS grey titanium with W&N rose dore. It's another weaker color that is a bit difficult to re-wet.. (I usually make sure to add water immediately and let it sit and soak to prep) and makes a sortof earthy terracotta-like color. Also, love your nails in this video!

Thank you! I have a love hate relationship with nail polish, hate putting it on and taking it off but love the look ;) I've also just recently fallen in love with shell pink, had it for years! It's so great to find new favorites in my stash!

I've avoided discussing the "pinks" on my channel, so I'm super grateful you tackled the topic for me! LOL! I will be sure to direct viewers right to this video in the future, as this was just such an interesting examination of the huge variety of offshoot colors you achieved with pink. Really well done and your narrative hits the most important points, for me, right on the nail! Well done on this one, Irit! Thank you!!!! ~ Mark

Thanks for sharing your favoring pinks. I think you would like Daniel Smith Mayan Red. I just got it, thinking it would granulate, and it really doesn't granulate for me, but it does wash out to a wonderful pink.

I'm a long time fan of DS Quin Rose and DS Potter's Pink, and lately I've been liking DS Quin Pink because it goes so much darker than other pinks which is great for mixing. I don't really have pinks in any other brand except Winsor & Newton Rose Madder Genuine that I picked up for a class awhile ago. It has the amazing scent of rose and bergamot and it's a stunningly glowing, subtle color (but not lightfast). Thanks for all the mixing ideas, I think I might mix my own shell pink version to try out.

Glad you enjoyed! Yes I have that W&N one, I found an old tube with their older design at my local art store and it just looked so inviting... It is weak tho so haven't used it much at the time , but I may like it now!

These are some great mixes, Itir. You used colors I would have never thought to mix with, like cascade green. I love the shinhan pink, too! So vibrant. Ya looking at it here the Daniel Smith opera pink doesn't look good at all. I have a stick of it and it's super hard to rewet. I'm definitely going to try the shinhan one now! Thanks so much for doing this video!

I have the Holbein Shell Pink and it looks just like what you have there. I love it with the Naples Yellow. I have mostly all Daniel Smith paints but, I am in the states so it was less for me to go that route. The DS Potter's Pink that I have is closer in color to your color chart than than the swatch. I love it with Moonglow. :)
@iritlandgraf4 жыл бұрын
That is such a pretty mixture, shell pink and naples yellow! I can imagine the Holbein version is similar, the brands from the far east seem to have similar colors options sometimes. I'll try potter's pink with moonglow, thanks for the tip!

DaVinci potters pink is lovely, with a soft hue and lots of granulation. Their Naples yellow is very nice, too. It may be pricey as it’s coming from the States tho. DaVinci overall produces wonderful paints. Denise Soden is a big fan of them 🌺

I choose my red base on the pink it produce... so I have Pyrrole Orange R.S (PO73) for salmon pink, Quin Scarlet (PR209) for warm pink, Quin Magenta (PR122) for cool pink and Opera Rose (PR122, BV10) for hot pink... however I only uses Opera Rose in my sketch book..

Great video- i love the pinks! I have to admit i have a love/hate relationship with Potter's Pink. I LOVE the granulation and dusky tint of this color, but HATE the streaky-ness and how hard it is to rewet. I find it almost impossible to get anything close to a mass tone and keep taking it out of my palette. Then i see a video like yours and put it back in. Maybe if i think of it strictly as a mixing color? I dunno, I'll probably just wind up avoiding it again. Sigh.
@iritlandgraf4 жыл бұрын
Haha I fall in and out of love with colors all the time. I really didn't like the W&N version I had but I do enjoy Schmincke's. It's easy to rewet and not streaky at all!

Thank you so much! Are you getting rid of your mission gold paints and if yes, why? I started with the mission gold only because I didn’t know anything and saw a glowing review for them so I ordered a large set. Live and learn! I seem to be moving away from them. I use the opera pink to liven up other colors but not much on its own. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I always enjoy your teaching!💕

Hi Donna! Glad you enjoyed! I think the mission Gold paints are great, I just have others I prefer so wasn't using them much. I gifted my 36 tubs palette to a friend who was starting with watercolors. I know lots of people who love them and enjoy them, so hopefully they will work for you too!
@PaintinHiding4 жыл бұрын
the rembrandt quin rose you mentioned that you have is PR122 which i believe rembrandt calls "quin rose magenta". they do offer a quin rose PV19 but i guess the shade wasn't to your liking. :) anyway, i have a few carmines that i love on its own but don't like the mixes they make so i'm gradually using them less. and then my top two faves of remb quin rose PV19 and senn helios purple PR122. i honestly wish i could cut it down to just one colour but i can't, i need both of them! haha~ butttt... your WN rose PR81 is just gorgeoussssss!!! that's how i wish all the magentas dried to be! still bright and gorgeous~ :D
@iritlandgraf4 жыл бұрын
I know, right?? I wish bright colors lived forever ;) But I am now convinced I want to use those pigments that might fade in years to come and at least have bright paintings for some years :) I did recently picked up Rembrandt's quin rose magenta, it's definitely better than their quin rose, but still not perfect ;)

I use fugitive colours with coloured pencils, I just like the colours and rarely sell originals so it doesn't matter if they fade to me. Most pencils with a hint of red are going to fade. I'm the same with watercolours, no one is going to get an original and by the time it starts to fade, I'll be dead so won't care 😝

Yup, let it fade but for now we want bright magic 🔆
