@@jackal_extraordinaire god I hate that word. None of them are real. Jerry Lee Lewis was problematic. Marmalade Boy is just a cartoon where nothing is real.
@jackal_extraordinaire3 ай бұрын
@BigDrahma "problematic" is the word that Inakyu used, so my saying it is a riff on her using it. However, I do subscribe to the idea that we are susceptible to influence from the various media that we consume. Even fiction. Even cartoons. If people are consistently exposed to the idea that children can get married, a la Jerry Lee Lewis, those people may eventually come to accept that for their society as well. And it works in reverse, too. The more we interact with the idea that something is abhorrent, the more likely we are to be influenced to feel that way as well. No single show, movie, or book would be enough to change all of society, but a cacophony of sources might. So I'm glad that our media these days does not present a teacher and child falling in love as acceptable. Beyond that, I personally don't really appreciate the heavy pushing of gender norms in MB. It was a product of its time, but even then, works like Fushigi Yuugi were far more equality-minded. I'm not even hating on MB- the premise is really good, the story is fun, the characters are likable. But if we love something, does that mean we can't criticize parts of it? Shouldn't we be able to point out what we find "problematic?"
@BigDrahma3 ай бұрын
@@jackal_extraordinaire critique something specifically, then. Problematic as a jargon term has been stripped almost entirely of meaning.
@acuilnos2 ай бұрын
@@jackal_extraordinaire If an individual allows controversial fictional content to influence them to a degree where they replicate those ideas and/or behave in a way in a way that is not acceptable/dangerous to society then I think that they've got far bigger problems as an individual. It is misguided to use fictional content as a scapegoat for the perceived potential influence it may have on an individual when in reality the problem lies with the person themselves. Fictional content has the freedom to broach controversial content in a way that is not acceptable in real life due to being fictional, and trying to force it to abide by the rules of real life defeats the purpose of fiction as a concept. I agree that it should be rightfully criticised, but it's important to remember the reason for why it exists and to differentiate between problems between fiction and real life instead of blaming fiction for the actions of a real person. Sometimes, you just have to recognise that you are not the target audience.

One of my favorite 90s romance anime is Kodomo no Omocha (Child's Toy or Child's Play?) and that is also filled with problematic things but I can't help but love it haha. I think sometimes as long as we can identify something as problematic and not romanticize it then it's fine. Seeing problematic things in media doesn't mean we have to agree with it, but it's good to be aware if it is problematic. I'll probably check this anime out since I'm in my watching 90's anime vibes lately haha. Thanks for the rec!

I agree! I would also say that some things are blown out of proportion when it comes to the title of "problematic". I love Dengeki Daisy and yet people don't read it just because there is an age gap. Thats a big loss if you ask me, since there is a good story and good characters in Dengeki Daisy, especially in comparison to anime and manga today.
@FancyTuna779 ай бұрын
@@mahakhatib27 ooo I never read that one but I remember hearing about it and seeing the art! I always liked the art style. I agree it can really be a missed opportunity on a good story if people ignore it for its problematic themes but I also get that everyone’s reaction to these things are so different which is fair too. I personally struggle with age gaps sometimes which I think comes from working with adolescents and so I get extra uncomfortable with age gaps or grooming. But it doesn’t bother me as much in a story when it’s not the main relationship. Like Fruits Basket which has at least 3-4 age gap relationships but they aren’t the main one. So I don’t need to think about it as often haha. So to each their own but I do get that it’s a shame when a good story goes unnoticed or ignored. 😓
@mahakhatib279 ай бұрын
@@FancyTuna77 Thats cool! I hope you get to read the manga because how they address the age gap relationship is actually pretty interesting. I understand that people look at age gap relationships in a critical way, but let's be honest, they happen anyways in real life wither you agree with it or not, and those relationships come out to be more successful than you think. I've seen it many times in my life through aunts and uncles in my family, which might explain why I don't really care one way or the other about this "problematic issue". I work with all age groups and as long as the person is an adult and knows what they are doing then I don't see the issue. Challange yourself on this and see how its told in a story. You might see things from a different perspective that you didn't consider before.

I love Fushigi Yugi. I have the DVD sets for the series as well as the OVAs. It is such an engaging show. That ending sting at the end of every episode is just amazing and really make it feel more like a soap opera. The characters are fun and the storyline would still hook me whenever I rewatched it. Taskui is my favorite character too. There are certainly problematic aspects to the series. I'm a bit surprised that you didn't mention Nuriko. I love Nuriko and they're easily one of the best characters in the cast, but I'm not sure if their gender identity would be considered good representation within the LGBTQ+ community. This was from the 90's after all. The whole virgin purity plot point was pretty strange to include though. I haven't watched the series in ages, but I do like the English dub, so I may try to rewatch it again one of these days. I'd love to hear your more detail thoughts on the series if you ever want to cover it again. While it only has one season, I think Yona of the Dawn might be worth checking out too. It isn't an iseaki, but it feels like it has a more polished version of Fushigi Yugi's premise and less problematic by comparison.

Fushigi Yugi is my favorite anime as well, and I have a similar nostalgic love for it. I was in middle and high school when anime started growing in the US, and Fushigi Yugi (and Evangelion) were my first non-Toonami series. My town is a college town and there was a great video rental store that had a ton of anime at a time when it was difficult to get (other than buying it at Suncoast for $40+ a tape). This is the time when series were offered on VHS tapes with 2 episodes (subbed or dubbed, not both). I had coupons for buy one get one free rentals, and I would take the bus 45 minutes to the rental place, rent two tapes with the coupon, bus back home, watch them, cry, and then bus back to get two more. I was HOOKED. Finding these series that had deep themes, high stakes, and weren't heavily edited/censored was a defining piece of me entering the anime community. I was lucky enough to go to Japan at the end of 2022 when the country just opened post-pandemic, and made a special trip to Osaka to catch the 30th anniversary popup. My heart was full.

I would make her close her eyes and cover her ears at the more problematic bits, and bless her, she would actually do it, because she knew she wouldn't be able to watch it otherwise. As far as FY being problematic for the mentioned reasons, I don't think that dealing with those topics automatically makes a show problematic. HOW a show deals with those topics might make it problematic, and while it's uncomfortable, FY acknowledged that those things were and are a problem and dealt with them responsibly. I'd even say that FY was pretty progressive, dealing with mental health, gender identity, and queeer love at a time when there was relatively low representation there. I would love to hear you yapping if you post a video about an anime that's not in english

Oh, it wasn't just popular. It was _everything._ Miaka and Tamahome were like the OG primetime couple in the PH while their show was airing.

I don’t know I think when you love something with your heart the heart is more important than the head like Nana my favorite anime has somethings that are problematic but any problems don’t matter cause you know I love it with my soul so I think it’s ok to adore something that’s old and has problems but if you love it that’s what matters

OMG I am finishing the first season, and lemme tell ya, it's a wild ride lol I am a late 80 and full 90s child, and fushigi yugi was always on my radar but never got the chance to watch it. Recently I found it on crunchyroll and I've been slowly watching it and oh boy, the yui storyline is intense, it's horrible and I didn't see it coming

I love Fushigi Yuugi. It's been my favorite since I saw it years ago. I love Nuriko!!!!!!! I like the prequels too. Too bad the Byakko story is on hiatus (we find out what happened to them during fushigi yugi). I didn't finish Genbu Kaidan, but we know what ultimately happened to her... I need to go back and finish that one. Yuu Watase's stories are amazing, I've read all of her series. I watched the sub-version. Every time I think about Fushigi Yuugi I think about Miyaka screaming "tamahome." It's so high-pitched and kind of annoying. I give her points because she's the same VA for Sailor Moon lol. And the music is amazing. ESPECIALLY the theme song to 3rd OVA Eikoden.

"I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in." Hey there, Inakyu. Based on your fervor, I'll give Fushigi Yuugi another try.

Shit I saw this video come on and was like it's a 90,anime how good can it be??? Then I realised I WATCHED THIS, didn't finnish it simply cause it was so good but it broke me when the best friend got transported raped and then started hating her friend. I was crying serious tears, I was 12 and I didn't realise it till now but I sooo loved the best friend, I saw a blonde short hair girl and was like yes!! Anyway maybe I can give it a rewatch

It's wonderfully awful, I love it. Was my first 'grown up' anime when I was like 12. I watched it again a few years ago, it was a blast. Especially accompanied with wine.
