Hi. I also debunked the stability motion control sales pitch on the advice of a physio. She said just go with what’s comfortable. 2 years later in a neutral shoe and never been more injury free or comfortable!

Hey Jamil! Been watching your vlogs for several months now and I'm SO GLAD to hear you talk about your injuries/shoes/thoughts. I have suffered a tibial stress fractures on BOTH legs in the last 8 months and I'm desperately trying to figure out my shoe situation. Like you, I was told to run (and have been) in a stability shoe. But, before that, I put over 100 miles on some Saucony Fastwitch 5s and had no issues whatsoever. Tried (foolishly) a Hoka Clayton and got my first stress fracture 4 miles into a run and now I'm in some Saucony Hurricane ISO 3s and got another stress fracture on my opposite leg a few weeks ago. So, I'm thinking about going back to a more minimal shoe and training my feet/legs to accommodate. Thanks so much for the video! Keep 'em coming! Jeremy

Hey Jamil, I'd be interested in hearing what strength training you did initially to help back up your call of BS on needing stability shoes? I'm sort of in the same position at the moment and fighting hard to stay in neutral shoes! Thanks and keep up the awesome work.

late to this, but I went through a similar thing having very flat feet. for me, the big difference-maker was eliminating heel-strike from my stride and opting for a midfoot/forefoot strike. I had persistent knee and ankle issues limiting my mileage, and those ceased to be an issue once I switched up my form. You just need to devote a couple weeks to consciously changing your stride on runs until it occurs naturally. During this period your calves will hate you and hurt all day, but you'll adjust and never look back. I back midfoot running to the death of me

Great insight, Jamil. I think almost every runner who falls in love with a shoe shares that dreaded feeling of the shoe being discontinued. My shoe strategy has been to cycle through a half dozen shoes and never stick with just one brand (even if I have a favorite). I don't know if there's any science to back this up, but I feel like changing shoes will slightly alter your foot strike and perhaps lower your risk for repetitive stress injuries perhaps... Fingers crossed it's been working for me.

Sorry. I’m late to the “party” seeing how you made this video four years ago. I wanted to say I bought a pair of Salomon Sense Rides also. But they messed up on the placement of the tongue pocket and I could not get the laces stuffed in there properly. Too bad. I had to return them to the store just because of that issue. Otherwise, I think they’re great shoes. Great grip. I ended up buying the La Sportiva Bushidos. Love them.

Not a fan of Salomons or Hokas tbo. They have some good and aggressive marketing but the shoes i tried from them didn't feel right for me right off the bat. Love the Mizuno's tho , they look rad, to bad they no longer make them i'd try. The company that surprised me the most was Saucony for me, i just love their kinvara 7,8s for my foot they are perfect, also wide toe box, lightweight and fast!

Psysso Try the Mizuno Hitogami. I wear them both interchangeably. Hitogami less of a squidgefest when they get wet though. Kinvara in summer end up soaking up fifty pounds of sweat.

Nice; always a drag when your favourite shoe gets discontinued or modified beyond recognition! I've just picked up a pair of Salomon Sense Pro Max's; haven't done a big bunch of km's in them yet, but I'm enjoying them to-date. It's been a hot start to summer here in New Zealand so the trails are already pretty hard and the cushion of these Salomon's has been really good and they'll be my race shoe for Tarawera in February.

Im a huge Salomon fan. I use the 12 set for my kit, and I recently picked up the Sense Ride and I love them. Great right out of the box. Just a good brand all around. I also have the Altra Superior 3.0. Also a great shoe, but noticed that in the humid summer heat they are not so great at ventilation. Sweat would just pool in them, making narly downhills even more sketchy. They are almost like a Gortex show to me. So I put them on the shelf until it cooled off. Im planning on taking them out today on a run to see if they are any better. Both shoes are great though. The Sense Ride gives you great confidence because they are sturdy, yet light. The Altra Superior 3.0 is a great shoe for vert because of the aggresive lugs and the flex they have.

Funny, feel the same way with Brooks Cascadia 7. Found a pair at a small shop last year (that version is five years old). I can't bring myself to wear them. I put them on a couple of weeks ago and just walked around my living room, it felt like the stuff dreams are made of. While running my first ultra last week I was thinking the whole time I should have worn them there and only there. Could had been my dedicated Canyon De Chelly Ultra shoe. Currently running in Salomon Max for anything over a half and Brooks Mazama for shorter runs. Wish the Salomon had more arch support, but otherwise good.

Hey! I recently discovered you, and i am loving it!! I got just one question, so i hope you check your old videos' comments. You mention that "people" said that you had to run in stability shoes and that you trained your feet and legs to the point where that was no longer needed. I myself has pretty weak angles and got a good overpronation going. Do you have any videos on your channel about this, and if no, could you make some talking about the process of strengthening your feet to the point where stability shoes is no longer needed? (I did not through your videos and did not find any on this subject) :)

Great video! I love hearing about how you were able to overcome over-pronation with strengthening. I over-pronate and recently bought some Altra Provisions, which are stability shoes though they still feel like they encourage strengthening. The wide toe box is amazing and though the zero-drop has taken some time to get use to. So far they're working out great as I'm building up my mileage, though I've see a few other companies out their putting out some running shoes with a wider toe box. I plan on using the Provisions for a while and then switching off them. I'm also trying to train my toes back from a Morton's Neuroma so that I can go further. I'm using a metatarsal pad, and a toe trainer called Correct Toes, though I'm pretty sure I'll need some daily shoes with a wider toe box soon. Also, I'd love to hear about nutrition training. I'm currently training to go further with less water and also trying to get the right vitamins on a daily basis.

Hi Jamil, have you tried the S-Lab Sense Ultra? I find them a bit softer cushioned then the Sense Ride and a bit more minimalistic top. The only negative i have is in really technical rocky terrain, especially when rain is pooring down, the midfoot hold can be a bit loose it the boa isn't really tight from start. Believe they have adressed that to the S-Lab Sense Ultra 2 from the Pictures i've seen on them.

Pretty similar experience here: Mizuno user all the way as they feel the most comfortable for my wide feet, however I''m considering a try on Salomon. For the "heavy" trails I slip on the Daichi. The frontside is flexible, very low to the ground, excellent ground feel and usuable on asphalt to dry trails and even some wet. The heel is completely opposite and many don't like it: very rigid and stable. I tend to heelstrike when I'm tired, so it is this section that seems to stop the "high mileage related injuries" from happening. Have you considered the Hayate? It's redesigned, I'm wondering if Mizuno changed the "narrowness" on this shoe...

How is it that you have a brand spankin' new pair of shoes that were retired years back? Must've been a sponsor maybe? Or you run a shoe museum? I personally keep all my shoes and their original boxes. I also keep meticulous notes on all my shoes. I track mileage, terrain I run on, and wear notes. When I finally retire a pair. I clean them till' they shine and put them back in their original box with the original receipt and all their data. Why? Because I want to educate my shoe purchases and improve going forward and I'm a HUGE nerd! Love the video!
