In this video I share my favorite underpainting technique for nighttime scenes or other low-key paintings. This is how I start my low-key paintings and works particularly well when trying to capture the glow of nighttime lights.

Very nice for the glowing effect! It's like an inverted notan. I feel you with not wanting to cover up the underpainting. It could be interesting to experiment with more layers of this subtractive technique to bring in other tones of color rather than with a brush!

Great video. Really like nocturnes. Have you ever tried makeup sponges? They are foam and wedge shaped, so you can use the pointed edge to lift off precise lines.

Christina, this is an excelente and detailed video! Thanks for sharing your process, great reference you are using. So, before you begin your underpainting, your panel has already been painted with yellow, do you recommend to do the same or just begin with raw umber? All the best for you and continue your journey! Looks great! Your videos are so inspiring. ❤❤❤

Thanks! So glad you liked the video. This method actually works best with a white panel. I would have used that instead but I didn't have any on hand haha.
