Not really a fan of Elton but thoroughly enjoyed this video! My favourite one’s got to be song for guy, because it’s mostly instrumental and that’s unexpected for someone so song based as Elton! And it’s a beautiful instrumental at that! I’ve just got that one on 7” single not the single man album!!!!

Top 10 for me in no particular order : Captain Fantastic, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Don't Shoot Me, Caribou , Honky Chateau., Tumbleweed Connection, Greatest Hits Volume Two with it's many Non Album Tracks), Madman Across the Water, Empty Sky and the Second Album eponymously titled Elton John..

Very nice Top Ten list. I own all of Elton's studio albums (with the exception of Wonderful Crazy Night) as well as a number of live albums and other compilations. So happy to see you include A Single Man, 21 at 33, Rock of the Westies and Blue Moves in your top ten. Agree 100%. Also agree about Shine on Through, criminally underrated song and possibly Elton's greatest recorded vocal.

Great list John. I will have to go back and give Blue Moves a fresh listen, I was underwhelmed when I had the album in High School. But I still listen to Captain Fantastic frequently. I used to love Elton when I was a young teenager, and go crazy when Bennie and Jets came on the radio.

Great list I love how it spans his entire career rather than focusing on just the 70s like so many tend to do. It’s a shame Madman didn’t make the list, to me that one album trumps them all, but that’s the beauty of KZbin: it’s your own damn channel. Cheers

Good job doing your top 10 favorite Elton John albums on your list, it’s really tough for me to narrow down which I might him favorite albums by him... but my favorite top 10 songs from Alton are: Philadelphia freedom, The greatest discovery, grow some funk of your own, Blue eyes, elderberry wine, Chloe, Little Jeannie, Captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy, empty garden and I want love! My first purchased album by Elton John was: Elton John‘s greatest hits volume two. (1977) I bought that album because it had my favorite song of all time by him... Philadelphia freedom. That single always reminds me of 1975 which was a great year for me! Keep rocking John!

Excellent video. I think that Elton John is under rated as a serious singer/songwriter because of his image sadly. Albums like Captain Fantastic and Tumbleweed Connection have incredible tracks on them (yes I agree "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is probably my favourite EJ track too) I got into Elton a bit late, in the early eighties, but it was seventies albums I listened too. Captain Fantastic got me through my first year of University. Anyway, keep up the good work - we all need a bit of sanity and something different to think about!

Hi John, enjoyed hearing your unique, personal rankings. - not an easy task...I agree with you that “21 at 33” is a decent album that is often overlooked. I came up with my own list - “Honky Chateau”, Don’t Shoot Me”, and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” were the records that I really loved and grew up with while I was in my early teens, but I think that I overplayed them, unfortunately...As of now these are my top ten favorite Elton John LP’s: 1. “Blue Moves” 2. “A Single Man” 3. “Honky Chateau” 4. “Madman Across The Water” 5. “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” 6. “Caribou” 7. “Empty Sky” 8. “Tumbleweed Connection” 9. “Elton John” 10.”Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player”

Your #3 choice confirmed a constant argument that I have with friends of mine -- and that's that one's first exposure to music is often the most poignant, and that's why some of us absolutely love certain albums or songs that others totally dismiss, or even laugh at. But when you first start getting seriously into music (your own music, not your parents' or older siblings), something will connect with you personally and it means everything to you. Later on you become more discerning and "sophisticated", but that first flush of musical appreciation is so much more wild and random because everything is so new and undiscovered.

I was a teenager in the early & mid 70s when I first discovered Elton and that's why for me the period 1972 - 75 is what I think is his best work. I may be biased against his later albums . Even allowing for my unconscious bias I actually do think most people would agree this is his best period. So I think I agree with what you are saying. Same thing with Bowie - Hunky Dory - Alladin Sane is my favourite period and I lost interest after that .

I've never been a fan of Elton John and only own one album (CD) - GYBR of course. He has always been around throughout my life. I have sometimes been tempted to purchase more of his stuff - Single Man for example. Caribou was the 2nd album I ever owned , got it on my 14th birthday in 74 ( Hunky Dory was the 1st) I would have Yellow Brick Rd as my favourite but also love Honky Chateau , Don't Shoot Me and Captain Fantastic . I love some songs of Blue moves, especially Cage the songbird, Chameleon and Crazy water, also like the instrumentals, but overall I think, that Elton sings too high and with too much falsetto on this album, so it sounds a bit strained. And a few songs go simply too long.

Good picks, not too far off from my own list."Capt. Fantastic" and "Blue Moves" are my favorites followed by all his '70s albums. I don't listen to his '80s albums much or the later ones. They're fine but not as memorable as his golden era. Favorite track: 'I Feel Like a Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford)'. 'Hercules' (Elton's middle name) is also a great track, it deserves some love. "Rare Masters" and the first box set were great for collecting a lot of lost b-sides but their value went down after those same songs starting appearing a bonus tracks on the CDs. I also had the "Lady Samantha" compilation which collected a lot of early songs I hadn't heard.

"21 At 33" is the best of Elton's early 80s albums, just a fun record with a lot of fun pop songs. The different energy he had with lyricist Gary Osborne seemed to be working, though Bernie does show up to good effect. It's a good example for me of knowing when my favorite album isn't the artist's best album, like "Londontown" and Wings.

I'm in complete agreement with your thoughts on Captain & the Kid and understand where you're coming from on the under-rated Blue Moves. I feel maybe I few more listens to Don't Shoot Me & Tumbleweed, could lift these classics higher, but that's just my opinion. Elton's self titled album is a very classy album, too. I had been buying records for 18 years by the time you got 'Single Man'. Funny enough, one of the things I didn't appreciate about that record was that it din't compare it to 'Captain Fantastic'. An LP that came out in my senior year in high school. I used 'Curtains' for a year-end grad slide show shown to the entire school. Still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. 100% with you on 'Yellow Brick Road'. Also love the 'other' double album, 'Blue Moves'. Though we were caught up in the Disco vs Rock-n-Roll problem back then. And when 'Blue Moves' disappoints it is because it is leaning too much towards the Disco floor. You're right about 'Madman'. I would push it up on the list. Its all about the Glam-rock, space-rock thing that was happening then as another Apollo landed on the moon and nobody seemed to care. There are no space songs on it but the sound is already there. Side one is 'killer' with 'Tiny Dancer' and 'Levon'. Ed Sheeran has more or less 'exposed' why the first one is rock-n-roll bedrock. 'Levon' is probably the quintessential EJ/BT song of their golden era. The best one really. The one that sums up the whole thing: weird lyric; sonic boom; and unstoppable beat. Side two is just a grand LP side. Enough said. "Rock of the Westies': I got it when it first came out and I never heard in it the thing you said about it, "most rocking album he ever put out". Missing from your Top 10 is one I highly treasure: 'Too Low 4 Zero'. It follows the 'Madman' formula. Except I hear 3 hits on side one. Side two is just another incredible album side from the British rocker. It was the second highest selling album for EJ in the 1980s, after one I didn't care for much: 'Sleeping with the Past.' That one was my first EJ CD purchase. Never hit home. I will put a vote in for 'Songs from the West Coast', an L.A. album for sure; Captain & the Kid and 'The Union'. 'Peach Tree' didn't do so much for me. I agree that he hit a rough patch, But let's give credit to the fact he never flat-lined at the emergency ward, which was in the cards for a lot of super stars like him. Love to see my rock idols go on to have 'normal' lives. Love him for that. And for the tremendous output. Sure, he put out 10 or 12 albums to fulfill recoding contracts more than the wishes of the fans. But there are 10 or 12 great songs that can be plucked from them. And that is saying a LOT,

Admittedly I am not a huge Elton John fan but I was surprised you did not include "Tumbleweed Connection." This is the only Elton John album I connect with and own. I would put that as number one, GBYBR as number 2, and the first album "Elton John" as number 3. ("The Border Song" off that first album alone earns it the number three spot.) After GBYBR, Elton John became too commercial to be of any interest to me.

1 CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY 2- TWO LOW FOR ZERO 3- TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION 4- CAPTAIN AND THE KID 5- GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD 6- BLUE MOVES 7- DON'T SHOOT ME I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER 8- MADE IN ENGLAND 9- ELTON JOHN 10- SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST I own 23 Elton John albums so most of the studio catalogue but apart from Captain Fantastic, which will always be number one for me, I don't have really strong feelings on the order of preference of the rest, they're the ones I play the most. I just finished reading Elton's bio and it's great a read, funny, honest for the most part and hard to put down once started, highly recommended.

here are some lesser known gems ( not lesser known to Elton fans but perhaps for others)…. Border Song , Come Down in Time, Mellow , Mona Lisas and Mad Matters ( one of his very best) , Blues for my baby and me , Ive seen that movie too , Roy Rodgers , Pinky , Chloe , All quiet on the Western front and This Train Don't Stop here anymore ( another one of his very best) . Funeral for a Friend /Love Lies Bleeding is one of my all time pieces of music and Yellow Brick Road album his brilliant peak imo.

Nice video. I think Elton gets a bad rap as "The Bitch." I think he's a nice, generous fellow, at least judging by the interviews I've watched. Also, can't forget that he was solely responsible for the second career of Neil Sedaka in the mid 70s. Neil's successful comeback had everything to do with Elton, especially the collaboration on "Bad Blood." So he gave back to other artists. I love those mid 70s Sedaka songs. "Laughter in the Rain" is among my all time Top 20 singles. Just a perfect pop song.
