It really doesn't take that many supplies to make great art :) I love what you said about having the artist's hand show through the art!

Thanks Eve :) When I first heard the 'hand of the artist' thing, it blew my mind!

Thank you for all the showdown, demos, and color theory videos! I'm using them (along with many of In Liquid Color's) to build my own first professional quality watercolor palette. I am FAR from a professional...having just started dabbling (and obsessively consuming all of the info I can find on the medium) a couple of weeks ago. My art style could be classified as "amateur doodling" but, I am obsessed and find the whole process, even just practicing techniques, so soothing. I'm having so much fun, too and I love all of your videos!

Helloo 🙂 Just wanted to say that any staining on a plastic palette is very easily removed with any standard eraser - so if you do happen to mix on your palette, spray and clean then use an eraser when dry.

Love how the essential materials differ from artist to artist ^_^ Simple plastic palettes + ceramic plates for mixing is exactly how my setup works as well. Separating some colors with a gap is a nice tip! My contaminated yellows desperately need a fix.

I love that you mentioned an alternative for alcohol based product. I am deathly allergic so it's great knowing a suggested product is more likely to be safe. It kind of sucks being an adult and having to time testing new products with when certain people are around in case something goes wrong.

You are so welcome! I am super duper sensitive to alcohol too so I understand your pain.

Kat is such a great name right?? lolololol I do have a lot of random white plates and even some plastic office trays that work too, but I just I love the Ikea plates because they are Ikea....lol Nah really, I like them because they are cheap and perfectly white. I like that they are square too.

A bonus feature of that plastic palette (but not all of that type) is that there is a ditch or gutter along the bottom edge of each of the large mixing wells, including the thumb well. These actually give you six additional areas for mixing a wetter wash of color, rather than chasing after the wash on the larger areas.

I personally love when an artist lets their sketchiness show through the art. I think it allows the art to tell a story of it's creation! I always love hearing when other artist's like to see or allow, as you say "the hand of the artist" show through!
@rashone28796 жыл бұрын
You can make excellent art with very few materials and you certainly can "live" without a huge pile of them. Talent and skill is not about how many brushes, palettes, and whatever else. Art supplies are expensive $$$, so some of us have to work with a small supply and learn to do good art in spite of that limited supply.

Dr. Kano, love your videos. Question, what do the alpha codes mean on your palette... for example, the (E&F) under Hooker's Green, or (C) under P.B. ?

Great supplies that you use! Thanks for showing the markers too, because I'm never sure which to use and I'm a little unhappy with mine. The Escoda Ultimo is the best brush, yours is so fluffy. It really doesn't need a lot of supplies for great art, I see myself pick the same palettes and brushes for my paintings and it's enough. Thanks for sharing your favourites!

So glad the markers were useful. Which ones are you using atm?

I Have the uni-ball air (smears a lot because it's so juicy), Pilot Drawing Pen (feels dry), Sakura Pugma Brush Pens, Pentel Brush Pen, Zig Mangaka flexible - the last two are ok, but need some time to dry.

As always, great video with great recommendations. I noticed on your palette, in parentheses you have a single letter (A) or (B), etc. I've been trying to figure out what that denotes yes. Can you enlighten me please?
@OtoKano6 жыл бұрын
Yes! They all indicate complimentary pairs. So A goes with (A) and so on. They are colors that perfectly neutralise each other.

@@OtoKano I am a beginner - could you explain what it means that they “neutralize” each other? You mean, a pair like that would give a black/brown/grey? Or what does that mean?
@OtoKano2 жыл бұрын
@@adriannamarszal @Adrianna Marszał yes that's exactly what it means! If a pair of colors perfectly neutralise each other, you should be able to get a nice black (not brown) from mixing the two in the right proportions.

Thanks Theresa. I've had my PhD for 7 years now. It was in Computer Science. I've decided to change the channel name to include the Dr. as I've been called Ms Oto Kano in other people's videos. Nothing wrong with it, but it felt weird to me as Ms isn't my title.

Hi Oto, do you have any problem with water rejection when using the Sharpie? My Sharpies are quite old - (Pre health and safety xylene based) and I find both the lines tend to dry glossy so reject the watercolour and also somehow the solvent or something carried by it would create a ghost barrier half a millimetre or so either side of the line. Are the new Sharpies better?
@OtoKano6 жыл бұрын
I've not personally noticed this happening Peter. I use new ones (I go through them really fast). I've not tried putting watercolor over my writing on the palette. However, I use them in wide bands for my swatching cards and not had this problem. The only time I have this problem that you're describing is when I try to paint over my printed lines in my test sheet (which is not done with sharpie), so I usually have to paint over the line at least twice.
