I don't tend to like using messy mediums like pastels but I wish I did because I love seeing the way you use so many different mediums for texture and the effects you're able to create ❤

What I usually do when I buy stuff like pencils is I get the big sets, simply because I like having all the colours at hand. I find that even if you don't use a colour all that often, it's at least there if the situation comes around. Most of the supplies I take out with me are not the dearest ones I have as I tend to just go budget for mobile stuff and keep the good stuff for home. Also being a photographer, if I want a landscape to paint/draw I just take a snap and go from there. Best to capture a landscape at the moment so you preserve the look of the landscape. Otherwise, you're fighting changing light conditions and other variables that might crop up. Same with flowers, animals, etc. Capture them in the moment and then let them go about their business. It also means if I want to revisit a subject at a later date, I can, and still have that subject as I saw it at the time. Though, if I don't mind dealing with all the variable that can crop up, I just sit down and draw what I see. Or, if I'm drawing/painting something from my imagination, I just go about doing that. However, as far as all the goodies goes, I like Holbien and Derwent pencils. Although, I'm not a "brand snob" and I do use faber-castels and prismacolors as well. Paints, I use Atelier and Winsor & Newton acrylics and oils, mostly. Although, I will try the budget brands as well. I like Copic and Ohuhu markers. Basically, I give anything a try, once, and if I like it then I add that to my supply.

I would recommend that you make yourself a wet palette for acrylis. It was a total game changer for me. there are also ones you can buy of course. Molotow also have refillers and empty markers, at least in Germany. But maybe you can find them in the UK, too. Or on your next vacation in Vienna.
@KatieMoody7 ай бұрын
Oh yes I'd love to make a stay-wet palette, it's been in the back of mind but I think it'll be helpful - just need to research first! That's really good to know about Molotow too, they're definitely not as widely available here in the UK and I didn't know they did empty markers and refills! Guess I need another trip to Vienna sooner than I thought 😄
@JoyDiPaola7 ай бұрын
I won’t discourage a Vienna trip, but you can find the Molotov empties and refills on Jackson’s.

I also paint miniatures and we use wet palettes for that extensively since you use such little paint. I use a small glass container with a locking lid, then put a slightly damp paper towel in the bottom, and then a piece of parchment paper. Super easy and cheap, since I did it with items I already had around the house.

Ooo I love Naples yellow too. It’s a staple in all my watercolour sets and the winsor newton pale Naples yellow gouache is gorgeous. My most used gouache is schmincke titanium gold ochre which is a little like a yellow ochre mixed with a Naples yellow. It’s a stunning colour and makes me happy just seeing it on the page. Winsor and newton perylene maroon is lovely too. I’m a brush pen addict and the faber castell dual pitt pens beat them all for me. India ink so very lightfast compared to tombows and ecoline, but their brick beige colour and a few others like the super pale yellow/like green colour are stunning. And they have the really fat bullet nib at the other end which is a different size to nearly all bullet nibs I’ve seen. They’re so much fun to use.
@KatieMoody7 ай бұрын
It's such a lovely colour isn't it! I've not used Schmincke gouache before but I've heard such good things - I'll have to check out those shades you've mentioned! 😍 I've not tried the Pitt pens either, I didn't realise they had bigger nibs! Interesting they are more lightfast than the others, that's a big positive for sure - another art supply I need to look into 👀😄

Thank you so much for sharing, in so much detail and insight, your favourite supplies, and why. I noticed you didn't swatch the Albrecht D pens (am sure you've used them on other videos I'll see at some point)- I was curious about the colour of the green, as the barrel looked quite grey to my eyes 🤦♀️ maybe they are all one colour (the barrels). Anyhoo, I had such a nice time watching this with my morning coffee, thanks so much for the happy start to mely day.

My pleasure Leanne, thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you enjoyed it 🥰 I totally forgot to film the swatches for those in my b-roll footage so apologies for that! The colour for each pen shows on the lids, though it's a bit greener than my footage shows because of the lighting in my studio 😊 I'd also say it's darker than the packaging shows it! It's definitely a bit more muted than most greens though which is why it's one of my favourites - I haven't shown a swatch on my channel but I'll try to show it in a future video ☺️

@devanshi21937 ай бұрын
@@KatieMoody I like the price and that they can handle most media! (I have the square 140 gsm book) I just started using it, it handles gouache, watercolor well, even though the paper wrinkles a bit. Alcohol markers do bleed a little and ghost but do not feather. It has a decent tooth for pencils, i sometimes find the royal talens a bit too smooth. The paper is white. Stillman Birn Alpha is nice, but alcohol markers feather on it. The strathmore books are not that easily available.

Kuretake is not watercolour. It’s more comparable to gouache. It’s opaque, doesn’t really move in water and the more diluted they are the less lightfast they are. These are important characteristics to consider when using.
@KatieMoody24 күн бұрын
I'm definitely learning more about them as I use them - they have been a great in-between as I move from gouache to watercolour!
