I've been really trying to get back into reading over the last 2 years and for the first time ever I've read more than 5 books in a year!! Somehow managed to bang out around 35 and, though its hard not to compare to people who reads 100s, I'm so pleased I was able to do it and just have a fun time reading again!! So far I'd say my favourite read was Angels in America. Absolutely devastating story but damn beautiful!

Try not to rule out reading next year, I actually used my kindle a lot on night feeds! The light was easier on the eye than a phone and it actually managed to keep me awake not send me to sleep! I’m pregnant with no. 2 now (followed with your TTC nearly simultaneously!!) and now a few weeks behind you. Really looking forward to following on with what you chose to share of your journey :)

I started reading again (post-university graduation) about a year ago and this year I’ve read 51 books so far! My original goal was 12 books so I feel very proud of myself! Next on my list is The Invisible Life of Addie Larue

I really love that you post book videos and don't read like a million books a year. I love watching booktube and bookish videos but I always feel like they are like here are the 20 books I read this week and that makes my reading feel so unimpressive and insignificant. But you are like I'm a normal human being and I will maybe read 40 books this year but I still love reading and here are my thoughts and feelings on books. It sometimes feels I guess like I can't claim to love books and reading when I don't read 100+ or even 50+ books a year. I know I shouldn't be comparing myself to other people but it's nice to see my own reading achievements reflected in someone who is just as passionate about books.

I've always set a 25 book goal even though I end up reading ~40 a year, I love having a low bar to reach lol. My friend convinced me to set a 50 book goal this year, so far I'm at 47! Which is the most I've ever read, but I'm still not sure if I like having the nagging feeling of having to keep up with my "goal". Thanks for sharing your reading with us, I always love your book videos! I'm super interested in Jews Don't Count, I'd love to hear more about your thoughts/feelings on being Jewish/Judaism

117 books so far this year. I will have to read some of your recommendation. By the way, if you didn't know, in Astronomy there is term Goldilocks zone, that is for a planet that is the right distance from a star to have liquid water and sustain life. For me: Best of the year fiction is "The Age of Madness " trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Great grim dark series. Also up there is "The Hail Mary Project " by Andy Weir. Excellent scifi. For non fiction, "Fossil Men," by Kermit Pattison, about the discovery of the first Hominids. And the other best is "Sapiens."

I rely on my 5 star ratings for finding my favorite books. I have a pretty generous rating system when it comes to the fact that I give 3-4 stars to almost every book I read (I usually only read books I want to read so almost no book gets below a 3), but my 5 star reads are held for those really special books.

South African politics see a lot of coalitions, to simplify it; a coalition is a collaboration. Two groups of people/parties, who otherwise do not see eye-to-eye, work together towards a common goal to beat third party. It's around this time of year that I bring out children's books and any short comedy book I own. Penguin's little blacks are great, too! I'm currently at 22 books and my goal is 30. I will for sure check out Goldilocks. I've recently had the realisation that I really like reading sci fi and you comparing it to The Handmaid's Tale (which I'm currently reading, and loving) convinced me. And to answer your end of video questions: My favourite book of the year was Artemis by Andy Weir. I've also read lots of retellings of Greek myths, most of them feminist, and my favourite of those was The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker. I track my reading in a reading journal. I basically just write down title, author, date and any comments. I've been doing it consistently since 2010.

I have read about 85-87 books so far this year (haven't logged anything in a few weeks so not 100% sure), which is by far the most I've ever read and only possible mostly because I fully embraced reading as my main form of relaxation (as well as, ahem, procrastination), thereby neglecting movies, tv shows, and gaming. I tend to have pretty rigorous standards for giving books 5 stars -- I only do it if they've fully burrowed into my soul and I know I will be revisiting them again and again, which, as you might have guessed, happens quite rarely -- and so I don't believe I've given *any* books 5 stars this year. HOWEVER, despite the lack of true standouts among this year's crop, I read the Captive Prince trilogy at the tail end of last year and have kept thinking about (and rereading) those books pretty much every day this year, so I feel like that also counts?? Of the many, many 4 star reads (mostly historical M/M romance, contemporary romance, and or some sci-fi), the standouts are: - Think of England (which I actually read off Hannah's recommendation!), - The Magpie Lord trilogy (also by K.J. Charles, who I agree with Hannah's assistant is one of the best historical M/M writers) - The Kiss Quotient (love #ownvoices autistic rep!) - Cat Sebastian's entire catalogue (also mostly historical M/M, or at least historical queerness), of which my favorites would have to be The Lawrence Brown Affair, It Takes Two To Tumble, Peter Cabot Gets Lost, and Unmasking the Marquess. (If you've never heard of Captive Prince, basically the crown prince of an Ancient-Greece-type-place is betrayed by his brother and sent as a sex slave to the enigmatic crown prince of an enemy nation who has no intention of using him for the intended purpose but seems bent on harming him in other ways; he must escape before anyone realizes who he is and kills him for it, but nothing in this foreign palace is as it seems, and the more he learns of the layered schemes that surround him at every turn, the less he is able to leave them behind. It's Game of Thrones meets Pride & Prejudice -- gritty swordfights, court intrigues, disturbing sexual mores (big tw for sexual assault and csa, esp. in the first book), but also plot twist after plot twist, exquisitely crafted dialogue, and the most satisfying slow burn enemies-to-lovers development I've ever encountered. (This is not "hot guy was mean to me so now I hate him even though I still like him" kind of enemies-to-lovers, this is an examination of how badly you can harm someone and still find a way to something beautiful, like what could *possibly* make a person go from "I want to kill you" to "I would die for you" when neither of those feelings is abstract.) The prose rewards close reading and demands effort to be understood, the story is at times truly hilarious, even amid all the angst and intrigue and uncertainty, and it's just, it's so good. The first book is disturbing and morally complicated and most definitely not a romance, more of a setup, but the second and third ones I had to put down every fifteen minutes to whisper-scream at myself "it's SO GOOD!!" bc I didn't know what else to do with all the feelings I was having; it's the strongest reaction a book has elicited in me in about ten years.)

this year was so weird for me… i’ve only read 7 books and 5 of them were in the same two week period. my brain just decided no reading for 8 months for absolutely no reason and i’m just now starting to read again.

Anything that’s multi POV generally works really well with audiobooks since you get multiple narrators!

I've read 21 books this year. I was really hoping to make it to 24 but I don't know if I'll be able to make it! My favorite books this year have been - Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer - Circe by Madeline Miller - My Life as a Whore by Tracy Beach My Life as a Whore was particularly fascinating! It was about a brothel owner in Colorado. She ran one of the most successful brothels that ran through the 1940s and how she influenced the town and provided a safe place for sex workers. It was an amazing read!

I was actually disappointed by Malibu Rising. I'd LOVED both Daisy Jones and the seven husbands by TJR, I just didn't find the writing style or the characters as gripping in Malibu Rising. I think because it was so hyped up and I'd loved the first two I'd read so so so so much I probably assumed that Malibu Rising would also be a 5 star read for me, which really taught me about the dangers of '5 star predictions'. However, anything that TJR writes in the future I will probably buy because of how much I loved her other books.

Just gotta say I am so curious about that Jews don't count book now that you mention it! I had no idea it existed but I will have to read it. I have Jewish family but religious and cultural Jewish practices weren't a big part of my life especially being raised Roman Catholic. What I've found interesting is that whenever people in my life find out about my Jewish family people say oh so that means you're a Jew and I always have to explain like this whole essay about my experience and it's just like a lot. People don't understand anything to do with being Jewish

I have had years where I've read/reread a great many books, but because they're manga (and thus take a lot less time to read than non-illustrated stories), I have a hard time counting them as reading. I know they count, but there's a lot of BS social stigma that likes to shout otherwise and sometimes my asshole brain reminds of it.

I think the discussion in what white people can do next about capitalism is so interesting. I feel like a lot of things that are talked about nowadays as a 'race' issue is really a class/socio-economic issue but has become simplified to race.
