The History of Reading sounds really interesting. I was thinking about how “weird” reading actually is the other day while I was doing the dishes. It’s pretty amazing that the whole experience just happens in our mind as we’re sitting there. Lol. Anna Karenina is definitely on my list to read in the future as well as anything by the Bronte sisters as I’ve never read anything other than Jane Erye. It was nice to hear what your favorite books of the year were and so wonderful that you enjoyed so many re-reads! I feel like rereading is such a wonderful experience and sometimes we feel pressured to keep reading more and more new books, but there’s so much joy when revisiting a old favorite book. :)

History of Reading is a really wonderful book. One of the things I loved about it was how it goes into how reading and attitudes towards it have changed over the years. Joy is a great word to sum up rereading ☺

You reminded me that I want to read The Library at Night by Alberto Manguel for absolute ages! Next year I should finally pick it up. Every time I see someone who loves Rilke, it makes me happy.

The Library at Night is one I would like to get to eventually. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it! Everyone I meet who reads Rilke tends to have a very personal relationship with his poetry, and it's certainly been that way for me.

What a great list!! It was really enjoyable learning what your favorite reads were this year. 😊 I’m SO excited to have Anna Karenina as a reading project I’m starting in January! The Bell Jar: I’m still in the first 3rd I’d say of the book and oh, the humor. So, so good. I couldn’t agree more about The Magic Mountain. I’m listening to it in tiny bits in the car and then reading the physical book - slow read is right. And I’m captivated by the cast of characters on that mountain. 😊 Happy Holidays, Aaron!

Thank you, Renee! Captivating is the perfect word for The Magic Mountain. I can imagine it working really well as an audiobook. Happy holidays to you too (a bit late, sorry!)

Cool list! I also enjoyed Manuel's History of Reading. Also, it was full of great book recommendations. The Magic Mountain, which turns 100 next year, was a challenging read for me, but still very enjiyable. I've read it in German and I can only assume what agonies a transaltor of this book must go through 😅
@aaronfacer8 ай бұрын
Yes, you're absolutely right about History of Reading being great for recommendations -- I've been down a few rabbit holes since reading that book! I've heard people say that Mann's prose is rather knotty in the original. Is that right?
@Buchstaplersyndrom8 ай бұрын
@@aaronfacer Knotty, yes, even for German, which is already prone to long-winded sentences. You also might say it's stilted. I needed some time to get into his style when I was reading his Buddenbrooks (which I later absolutely adored). Magic Mountain is also hard for its many references to real authors and philosophers. Did you look them up or does your edition have annotations? Also, your video has prompted me to dip into world of the Mumins, and to go back to Rilke. Loved him when I was younger.

Empusion by Olga Tokarczuk is a feminist version of The Magic Mountain. Really good too.

Ooh, that sounds good! Olga Tokarczuk is on my list of living authors I'd REALLY like to get to.
