Late comment. MY fave guitar is also a Mex Fender strat. Metallic red with Duncan Pearly Gates bucker added. Also, like this one it is loud unplugged - almost like an acousticy sound. Don't know whether tonewood matters in electrics, but it is resonant and sounds the best -of my guitars- amplified. The range seems better.

I once asked a fellow guitar player, "How do I know what guitar I should buy?" and he said, "You just know." I didn't really understand exactly what he meant until I experienced it. Its an incredible phenomenon that is completely unexplainable.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Back in 2000 I was in a place where i could buy any guitar i wanted. (Im a les paul fan) I went to a guitar shop close by that id been in a thousand times. (Its now closed and gone) they had an enormous selection of les pauls hanging up It was raining like hell. Store was dead. These guys treated me like I was a king. They sat me on a stool in front of a nice tube amp, properly cranked. And they took every les paul they had down and handed them to me one by one. It was the best music store experience ive ever had man. They had the from 900 bucks to 15 grand. All kinds of pauls. I played them all. BUT......there was one that just felt like it was born in my hands. I kept going back to it over and over. It was a 2000 gary moore signature les paul. Not the most expensive or the cheapest. But to this day its the best playing and best sounding les paul ive ever picked up. I still have it.

You spoke about how you would feel if your guitar was stolen. I have the same exact thoughts. I dont gig or anything, I'm just a beginner. It would ruin me if anything happened to my strat. I was playing the other day and it suddenly stopped working, I went full blown panic mode like I had lost a child or something lol.. it turned out to be a bad cable. It's cool to know I'm not the only one who takes their guitar so seriously. Some weekend days I'll literally practice for 14 hours in a day. I just want to be able to express myself through the guitar like you. I have no plans of gigging or anything, I cant really explain it, I just love it and want to get better. Hopefully one day I'll be half as good as you

I know the feeling about guitars speaking to me, too. I was at a shop in Ghent, en tried out a Hagstrom Deuce. I was sold in a matter of seconds. I didn't have any money on me then, so I returned the week after, and the guitar was sold, it sucked balls. Two weeks after tho, I saw the exact guitar, like literally the same guitar, second hand. Bought it in an instant, and stil love it

Man I agree with you, when you get that special feeling which nobody else will really understand, with a certain guitar, just the feel of it, and sound makes you smile everywhere inside and keeps bouncing around in your whole body, that is priceless... life is way too short, now I just have and play 2 guitars, sold all the rest!! For me, playing these favourite ones is pure pleasure, as I have said, time doesn't wait for ANYONE, our existence on this planet earth is sooo damn short that I figure why not just experience THE best pleasurable feeling with the best fulfilling guitar. Also knowing that they will last more than I, freaks me out a tad. As no one in the future ( when I am not around) will understand them as I do, or take care of them like I do, or even make them talk as I do!!!! That's why I take advantage and play them (the 2 guitars) as much as I can, every single day. Great video as always my friend. :-) :-) :-)

A great guitar with a great player :-) I bought at 1999 MiM Classic 60s Strat back in 04. we share a similar story. 1999 was the year I started playing - the same year as the guitar. I know the feeling. Tried out an awesome strat that played and sounded pretty much perfect for me, except for the price. So I got home and checked local listings for used guitars and saw the same one I played in store, and another which was a limited edition version. Went to check it out a couple of days later and voila I now have what is pretty much the perfect strat since it was almost perfect condition, cheap and hardly played. Definitely agree that guitars can speak to you, had a couple of these revelations prior to this when buying my acoustic and les paul haha :)

It's great seeing what people's favourite guitars are. .I can't even remember what year I started playing, let alone the month. My Dad was/ is a musician and still doing film and TV drama music at 70 .I was always surrounded by guitars. I remember my brother knocking over one of my dad's Les Pauls and snapping the headstock(which I've done since a number of times) I started out on a Ukulele aged around 7-8. I collect guitars and basses. My first good guitar was an early Fender Mustang which sadly got stolen. My favourite has to be between 2 very different guitars. A 1983 Japanese Fender 57 JV and a Steinberger GU series(The one with the strat style body). It's hard to pick a favourite(I do like Telecasters and The LP JNR for their simplicity). People always ask me why I own so many instruments and it's because they all sound so vastly different. Choosing the Steinberger may not be to everyone's taste but it feels like it was made for me. I collect analogue pedals too.

Wow man. Nice video as usual. That guitar indeed sound great. I have a MIM classic 60’s 3T sunburst nitro finish the reason being been watching your videos regarding this coz I thought of swapping pick ups with a SS1 sd or a fender 57/62 set to get that Frusciante tone. By the way, it’s awesome to know your favorite guitar is a 2002 Mexican strat 60’s but with Tex mex pups. It sound great too man. After all the searching of the right pups for my strat, I think I have to keep the ones on mine though it’s just the stock ones (fender vintage style singles coils). Wow and also quite infuriating to know that your guitar tech stole your original low E saddle with a blank one. Grrrrr. The nerve of that guy. Anyways cheers man. I do enjoy your videos. A 1988 Charvette was in my pawn shop around 1991. A baby blue Strat thing with one humbucker, and no bells or whistles. That one really spoke to me. Fantastic sound even if it was ugly. The thing is, it begged everyone to play it. Business was slow, and I really needed to make some sales, but I DID NOT want this thing to leave me. I figured I'd just tell the wife that it was a "cheap" guitar and nobody wanted it.....this way I could keep it. So a local who'd had his eye on it for a month came in on payday with a wad of cash. I quoted a ridiculously high price and he took it. A great sale that I'm still sick over.

I asked if I could try it and fell instantly in love. I got home and couldn't stop thinking about it and called the shop and begged them to hold it for me as I would return the strat the next day and grab the tele. They agreed and the rest is history.

Dave, I have a question for you: I've noticed that, although it is listed as Arctic White, this guitar doesn't have the same white "creamy" look of, say, the classic 70s mexican strat. Could you explain (if you know) why that is? Is it actually a different colour, or is it just a matter of contrast/visual illusion between the guitar finish and the pickguard colour?? The reason I'm asking is that I'm seriously considering getting the 60s mexican tele (which judging by your love for the strat equivalent should be a good choice), but I really want the classic creamy look of arctic white, and that guitar has an identical look to yours. So do you think it's a matter of replacing the pickguard with another one, or is it another colour? Thanks in advance :)
@thedavesimpson7 жыл бұрын
My guitar is actually Olympic white and is actually off white now as its aged. It does look artic white in bright light from a distance but its yellowed off. Also like you say the green pick guard does make it look whiter. I would say that when its new it'll be very white for a few years until it ages in. If you want the off white colour i'd look for one with that colour. I hope this helps. :)

I have a MIM 60s strat as well. It's a road worn model, lightly reliced. On my strat the bridge pickup is wide open, not connected to a tone control. It's very bright and I plan to modify that when I have the funds. Was that common with the stratocasters of that era?

It was indeed. It was. Until players started modding them so that the bridge pickup was wired to the bottom tone control. Its not a Fender thing really. :)

I'm quite interested in the whole "special guitars" thing. What is it about one Strat that makes it so different to another one? After all, you have a few. Can you pin it down? Where does the Peter Green Les Paul stand on your faves list? Love the playing. As always.

The only thing i can say that makes this guitar more special is the amount of time i have spent playing it and the fact that when i do play it just speaks to me in a way that no other guitar does. Hey dave, love your videos man. Did you have to put any oil on the neck when you stripped the lacquer off the neck dude? how did you do it just sandpaper? is this guitar nitro or poly finish mate. Thanks for any help, it looks great and I think I'll look into getting myself one. :D

Thank you very much for liking my vids. :) I did't oil the neck nopes. Just sanded it smooth. It has a poly finish. Thanks again. :)

I was too stupid to realize my favorite guitar was "it" when I got it. I had just gotten a new Les Paul and wanted to unload my old one so I took a used Strat in a 1:1 trade because it was the same color as the one Mick from guitarist/TPS had, and because it was a "CS" guitar I figured the value was roughly equivalent. I didn't realize until I got home and plugged it in and was completely, absolutely blown away that I had accidentally just gotten a first year Cunetto relic and that I'd found a guitar that someone will have to pry out of my cold dead hands.

Hi Dave. Lovely guitar. Just wondered who your main influences are when it comes to guitar, aside from Hendrix and Frusciante which I've gathered from watching loads of your videos? Maybe you could list a top 5 or something excluding those two? I ask because I think your playing is incredible and when I think about how I want to be able to play in a few years time, you're the perfect example of how I imagine it to be, but I just have no idea where to start haha. Cheers!

Thank you very much indeed. :) Excluding Jimi and John my main influences are Mike McCready, Peter Green, Richie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Paul Kossoff, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Healey. I have tons. I try to mash them all together. :) Thank you so much for your kind words. They really do mean alot to me and good luck. I'm sure you'll get where you want to be. :)

would it be a good idea to sand off the poly finish from the back of my epiphone les paul neck? I've been tempted to do it a few times but couldn't bring myself to do it. I did rub down the neck on my jackson but not all the way through, only gave it more of a satin finsih which polished itself out and I don't even play it much I hate the fret board and neck... too flat and wide for me.

Its really up to you. I haven't done that on my epi but i have done it on my goldtop Vintage. It feels great but you want to make sure your sure before you do it. :)

Such a sweet guitar :) it's what I've modelled my ratocaster on (probably seen it on fb). How about a shootout with this and a Vintage?

Thank you. I have seen it. I love that name as well. :) Thats a pretty cool idea. :)

I recently got Tex Mex pups. But they have a pole height different from other TM pups. On the back, they generally look like all TM, except for these poles. Stagered is different. In your opinion, is it possible that there are fake TM pups?

John Frusciante Said in a interview that he had SSL-1 on his All Strat. I wait a DS-2 to complete my "Frusciante Rig". A CE-1 is too Expensive so i use a Boss CHORUS CE-3...
