I'll try not to bore you with too many details but I thought I'd share my journey into metal. I suppose I should start by saying that I'm presently 70 years old. I've loved music almost my entire life, right from when I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I started buying albums in the late 60's, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, etc. For the next 30 years I continued buying music but mostly what became classic rock. I dabbled in punk, listened to a lot of hair metal in the 80's and got into grunge in the 90's but it always felt as though something was missing. I wanted heavier, faster & louder. Yes, I had bought Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead, etc but that didn't completely scratch the itch. Around about 2000 I met 3 different guys through my job and we'd spend a lot of our down time talking music and all 3 told me I really needed check out more extreme music. I did but I just couldn't get it. It was chaotic & noisy but I didn't give up and kept returning to it. One night I was listening to Slayer and it suddenly clicked and I realized just how much stunning beauty is contained in those songs. From that point on I started listening to everything I could get my hands on. This is not an exaggeration but I've been literally moved to tears by the beauty of the music. I spend upwards of 6 hours a day with the headphones on listening to metal. I love listening to music, talking about music and reading about music. You could post a 12 hour video about music and I'd be there for every second of it. I don't go to shows, mainly because I'm autistic and cannot handle crowds in any way, shape or form.

Interesting video as usual, Lindsay! I also have Metallica's Ride the Lightning as one of my top 10 albums ever, and also have a Death one, though I like Symbolic more than The Sound of Perseverance (great album too, very close race!) My top 10 (ordered by date), started with power/heavy, now listening more melodeath/atmospheric black honestly, but my 20 something years with metal have been such a ride! Metallica - Ride the Lightning Judas Priest - Painkiller Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss Death - Symbolic Stratovarius - Visions Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows Threshold - March Of Progress Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I Sigh - In Somniphobia Wilderun - Sleep At The Edge Of The Earth Keep it up, cheers!

Fantastic video Lindsey. I got into metal way back in 1986. My first metal style I got into was Glam Metal. Bands like Stryper, Poison, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi etc. Then when I got into High School my friends introduced me to Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth etc. Now that I'm 52 years old the internet got me into Ghost, Mayhem Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, Arch Enemy, Baby Metal and so on. your videos always make me smile. 🤘

Congrats, Lindsay! I'm looking forward to the next hundred. Re: getting into metal, I remember listening to blue-rock and bits of heavy rock (Led Zep etc) when i was in single digits, but I think my first real interest in metal came with either Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden (depending on whether you cound Sabbath as metal) in my early teens, then heard Ride the Lightning in about 1985 and was blown away. "Piece of Mind" is a great album; for some it slightly falls between Number and Powerslave, but it's a key part of the evolution of the band (first one to make extensive use of literary references, first album with Nicko on drums) and it has stood the test of time really well. Re: Death, "SoP" is a good album with solid writing and some great guitar work and drumming, but I've always found it a difficult listen. I remember hearing the album for the first time late in 1999, and wondering what was wrong with Chuck because the vocals sounded "off" to me. A couple of years later, Chuck was gone, and I can't listen to it now without returning to that initial reaction and what followed for him. In different ways, i like everything from "Leprosy" (my proper starting point, although I had heard "Beyond the Unholy Grave" from SBG before Leprosy was released) to "Symbolic", but the high points for me now are probably "Human" and "Symbolic". Maybe it's just me but I sometimes associate particular albums with specific times and places in my life. Since you mentioned "Demanufacture", I remember hearing tracks from that album (mostly the title track and Self Bias Resistor) during the final months of a year of living and working in Finland (a good learning experience but some aspects of it were pretty tough), and knew I would need to buy the album when I returned to the UK (I'm sure there were good music stores in Finland but I didn't know one at the time). As a slighty random example, I always associate a fairly obscure album, "Manic Impressions" by Anacrusis, with the Isle of Skye (first time I went on holiday with my own car, and I played that album incessantly during the trip) . . .

Drum & Bass and Metal are my favourite genres, and I’m starting to combine the two! Neurofunk and Djenty stuff are definitely my favourite subgenres, they actually share a lot of common ground and since there is more and more electronics in metal now, it’s easier to get a feel of how to bridge them! Fear Factory is also one of my favourite bands and i love blending Dino’s style with djent riffs that have a lot of bends and whammy pedal parts

Congrats on 100 videos. I first got into Fear Factory by buying the Demanufacture T-shirt from a magazine with not even listening to them before, I just loved the band name. I went out and got the album, luckily, I loved it or else I would've been wearing a shirt from a band that I didn't like, LOL.

Great episode. Can't wait for the next question session I agree with you on so many things . Cant get into the cores much either. I do like Killswitch though. Deathcore ..love the blackened vocals and Symphonic elements but overall not my thing except Lorna and Shadow of Intent. Funnily though, not a fan of Symphonic metal or fantasy power metal. Rituals was my intro to Rotting Christ. I listened to it in the dark and it blew me away. What an experience. I bought Demanufacture, knowing nothing of the band. Thought it was gonna be a thrash album. Its killer though. Self Bias resistor is still one of my faves. And the Blackbraid records are great. Took me a few listens but the atmosphere is excellent. Really dig them.. Think im gonna have to give Green Lung another listen.

I really liked what you had to say when it comes gatekeeping and being into only one type of metal. If you listen to what your friends listen to and just keep on listening to that type of music. Then you need to open up your mind and just go with the follow. Let you ears be the judge and not let others tell you what to listen to. I'm 52 and I'm not stuck in a decade. If something that I hear grips me from the go. Then I will listen to it. You spoke of what type's of CORE. IE Metalcore, Deathcore and hardcore. I'm more into hardcore (Hatebreed, Terror, Sick of it) and so on. But I do like the new sound of metalcore that is out right now. Bands like Erra, hollow front crystal lake is what metalcore i really like right now.

As a 54-yo guy, I found it really surprising NWOBHM (partly) got you into heavy metal, solely because that's what got me in, back in the early 80s. I remember hearing the song 'Number of the Beast' as a pre-teen and being totally shocked, haha.. When I got back into heavy metal in 2018, I was into lighter stuff at first -- power & symphonic metal. Arch Enemy was my gateway band into heavier stuff, it tickled me pink when you mentioned them. I've explored the heavier side a lot, now I'm back into a lot of lighter tunes again, life is strange, lol. Congrats on 100, cheers from Canada.

Being the same generation as you I can relate to a lot. My gateway band was Hammerfall and their Legacy of Kings and Renegade album. I still think Heeding The Call is total banger. Later came Metallica and today I devour most types of metal, even if I also have a hard time with metal-core (those clean vocals just kills the energy for me). Always nice to hear a persons metal journey. Rock On!

I got into metal in the late 80s, hearing bands like GnR, Def Leppard, and Van Halen on the radio. But bands like Iron Maiden, Dio, Priest, and Motorhead always held a mystique with me because of older kids wearing their t-shirts, so I got into those. I skipped thrash, got into death metal in the early 90s, got sick of it, then got into power metal and (finally) thrash in the mid 90s, then explored black metal and melodic death metal in the late 90s, and from there just explored different genres. Fast forward to today: I just got off a 5-year run listening to nothing but brutal death metal and goregrind, and I completely burned out on it, so as usual I returned to my traditional/power metal roots. Favorite albums: Iron Maiden "Powerslave," Black Sabbath "Tyr," Queensryche "The Warning," Mercyful Fate "Don't Break the Oath," Liege Lord "Burn to My Touch," Cirith Ungol "Frost & Fire," Fates Warning "Awaken the Guardian." For "exreme metal" it would be Morbid Angel "Blessed are the Sick," In Flames "The Jester Race" (is that extreme? I don't know, and don't care), the Lust of Decay debut, and Deeds of Flesh "Inbreeding the Anthropophagi."

Downloaded? Really? First it's illegal, and second a real metal fan BUY the music. I still to this day buy cd's. I have around a collection of 800 metal albums on cd. Downloaded music do not support the music, supporting a band do make the experience even better in my opinion. And another time you should not brag about downloading music tbh.

I've just found your channel and you talk really well and seem to have a similar taste to me and I saw this video. Interesting choices, I like some of the bands you mentioned but would go for different albums, I agree with Ride the Lightning though. Eonian wouldn't be in my top 3 of Dimmu, I'd go for Death Cult Armageddon. I'd go for 7th Son from Maiden, Leprosy for Death and The End Complete for Obituary. No More Tears is good but I just prefer The Ultimate Sin. I liked Demanufacture when it came out but not so much nowadays. It would be boring if everyone was the same.

I love that you broke your tooth on classic metal. My first concert was 1984 Iron Maiden Powerslave tour with Twisted Sister opening. I had been a metal fan for 3 years at the time. What sucked about that era is there was a lot of separation like you discussed in the opening of your video. If you like Judas Priest and Ratt you can't like Megadeth and Metallica. It keep me from listening to great music. Now I listen to almost all genres from Blues to Metal (all subs) to opera to jazz. Don't let other tell you what you like.

Deicide album artwork has always been basic, but flashy...but not AI. Great job on calling it out. Ride the Lightning production was much better, but Master of Puppets was raw and to the bone! I like both albums, but listened to Puppets more so. For a band to add to your show, Brodequin I heard throws a great show... but they don't go on tour often. Hulder also throws a monster show, Marz is awesome! Thank you for the video!

I used to look at album reviews and critics. They were trying their best in giving an objective review based on criterias. But, in the end of the day music is subjective. I am 45, listening to metal since 12. The only albums I would give a review on are the ones I gave more than 666 spins. And still then this would be my personnal subjective opinion about them. Like you and many others, the albums that standed the test of time for me are the ones that have a special story attached to it or that connected on a deep level with me for unknown reasons. Here a list of some of top albums that have some story attached or blew my mind: Spiral Architect, Individual Thought Patterns by Death, Arise by Sepultura, Metropolis part 2 by Dream Theater, The Divine Wings of Tragedy by Symphony-X, Rust in Peace by Megadeth, The Bleeding by Cannibal Corpse, The Mantle by Agalloch, The art of dying by Gojira, After by Ihsahn, The Congregation by Leprous, Once Upon the Cross by Deicide, Cowboys from Hell by Pantera, Sorrow of Sophia by Draconian, Slave Design by Sybreed. There is a lot more but will stop here.

Yeah, the classics like old Metallica and Iron Maiden are great. I also don't like the new metal subgenres like matalcore, industrial metal, alternative or progressive metal, but I also don't like the pure death or black metal, these sounds too monotonous and not very varied. It's always good when these are refined with catchy melodies and clean vocals (especially if they are female). In terms of content, it's also good if the songs aren't just about murder and agony. So my favorite albums are: Gothic Metal: HIM-Razorblade Romance (9/10) many would say, that they didn't fit in metal, but some albums or songs can be seen as such Symphonic Metal: Nightwish-Oceanborn (9/10) with the two added songs Sleeping Sun and Nightquest Eternal Tears of Sorrow-Chaotic Beauty (8/10) Trail of Tears-Bloodstained Endurance (8/10) Melodic Death Metal: In Flames-Clayman (10/10) Dark Tranquillity-Damage Done (10/10) Children of Bodom-Follow the Reaper (10/10) Kalmah-Kalmah (9/10) Melodic Black or Blackened Metal: Siebenbürgen-Delictum (9/10) Pagan or Folk Metal: Wintersun-Wintersun (10/10)

Too many metal subgenres!!! Can't stand it! I just don't get why it's so important to some people. I appreciate there are different styles, but it's just got silly over the years, with so many "core" subgenres, whatever the difference is. For me, in my long association with metal, 42 years, it's either heavy or not, fast or slow, good or bad. I liked the simple life! Greetings from Glasgow.
