Callas's highest notes were an integral extension of her upper register, whereas Sutherland seems to have stumbled upon a new register for those highest notes. In her pre-weight-loss prime, Callas could sail up to an E-flat or even an E natural "as easily as drinking a glass of water" (as Simionato described it) without ever needing to pause or prepare (listen to her Turco segement from 1950, or her proch variations, or Sempre Libera from 1952). Sutherland, on the other hand, always needed a pause or a preparatory note to bounce into the highest register, which you can see her doing it in the first segment on this video. The notes also seemed to resonate differently: Callas's high E-flats resonated in the mask, just like the rest of her upper register, where as Sutherland's seemed to resonate farther up and back, which was unique. She also said that during a recording, one of the chorus members behind her told her, "When you hit those high notes, it seems like you're singing backwards." Sutherland always said that she felt those notes resonating in the back of her head. As late as 1957, Callas could start an E-flat fortissimo and then do a diminuendo to a pianissimo (Sonnambula), but I have never heard Sutherland modulate the E-flat, even though she might have been able to. Overall, they were both unique singers which have had no equal since they departed the operatic scene. Historically, Callas is the more important of the two, for her musicianship, her interpretive genius, her magnetism on stage, and her ability to condense the essence of a character into the tone of voice. Sutherland was a great vocalist, but she never had the thousands of colors available to Callas, but she had the vocal beauty that Callas wasn't blessed with. I find Sutherland a very committed interpreter, and I think she often gets short shrift on her interpretive abilities and commitment, most likely because of her poor diction. Ethan Mordden said it best when he wrote, "Where Callas was the great singer often dismissed as an actress, Sutherland was the great singer often dismissed as. . . a great singer."

I don't think that you understand the prompter system (especially in those days) The prompter sang along - in the prompt box - from his score the whole way through the Opera. You could choose to follow him / or not. In Callas case he was not necessary but for other artists on stage (in performance) to key into he could be vital. It was very much the old way of doing things - Opera was not as 'produced' and 'directed' as it is now. I am sorry that you misunderstood this.

Opera is not only high notes, the greatness of Callas is not really only a perfection of the voice and technique and so on, but mainly because she could express the whole range of emotions in her singing, she was not playing operas but living in them. For example, when others portraying Medea, she IS Medea. Sutherland has an extremely rare and beautiful voice, but she simply singing the words, not feeling them and she was't acting on stage like Callas. I love both, however Maria is incomparable to nobody. She's unique.

No denying the splendor of Sutherland high register its radiance and lovelyness is indeed a marvel. Distinctive in quality and character. If you heard one you heard them all. That goes for the climactic notes and for her trills. Splendid as they are. Callas gave us everything in every way different to fit the musical and dramatic context. Had we comparable record of her early performances as we do of Sutherland there would be no debate on this matter.
@jondavwal133 жыл бұрын
Um, all of these performances of Callas are before the age of 35. All of the Sutherland performances are after age 35. WTF are you talking about? Callas had a 5 year peak. Sutherland, 25 years. Maybe you weren't aware of this but they were contemporaries born three years apart. Callas's voice was gone when Sutherland was just getting started. Callas basically stopped singing operatic roles in the early 60s and Sutherland made her Met debut in 1961. We have all the recordings of Callas we need, practically all of them that were listenable. The rest are torture.
@shaundudley45763 жыл бұрын
@@jondavwal13 Um. I don't understand your hostility. Sutherland's splendor is unquestionable. I am merely contrasting the scope of Callas who indeed tortured the ear as much as the heart frequently in the same moment to uniquely impactfull effect. Sutherland was her virtuosic beauty, without it she was nothing. Callas even when she lost vocal health could still, even with enhanced power and profundity, deliver her artistry by those very compromised means. This cannot be said of Sutherland or really anybody else. And I mean that Callas' short period of full splendor, "her fat years" are meagerly represented in recordings and those that best demonstrate her at her most prodigious (the live recordings) are in very bad sound. Those are just unfortunate facts that I wish were different. Her career and the fate of her voice are historical facts that leaves us with the legacy for which we must be grateful. I just wish we had better record of it.

Interesting, but this really does not show the true grandeur of either singer. Callas altered the sound of her voice for each character she sang and without the full aria or scene the high notes cannot show that supreme singing/acting combination. Sutherland achieved dramatic impact via the enormous size of her voice, her ability to maintain the smoothness of the center of the voice across an extraordinary range, and her extremely careful use of fioritura. neither singer can be compared in any real musical way to the other even though their repertoire overlapped to a great extent. Each has a unique and probably never to be heard again perfoming persona.

Interestingly Sutherland's performances here are all after the age of 34 and Callas's were all before the age of 34 (her voice was in tatters at 35). It also must be noted that Callas never sang a role again after Sutherland performed it. Sutherland sang well into her 60s and until the very last years, quite well. I think they were both great artists and both great singers and it was a matter of priorities who you prefer. I have only seen one artist in my entire life who embodied the character of both and she was not a singer. Ballet dancer Gelsey Kirkland had the technical perfection of a Sutherland and the dramatic commitment and artistry of a Callas. The combination probably led to the greatest performances by a ballerina ever given. However, having so much drove her insane and to drugs. Her memoir "Dancing on My Grave" gives you insight into what it was like to be able to do anything technically with a desire to imbue everything with meaning.

The main difference between comparing these two is that with Callas you have a career with 5-10 famous hight notes (the "Mexican Aida" for example) that every one of her fans talks about ad nauseam. On the whole, except for these notes, her high notes could have been categorized as a fire warning. Sutherland has no such notes to speak of as for about 10-15 years of her career all of her high notes were perfect and consistent and beautiful. Even this video includes that hideous Callas top Lucia note which sounds like she's slowly trilling on thirds so you get to the bad ones pretty quickly if you count down. Callas had things to recommend her. For me, however, if you don't have video of her singing it then listen to someone else. She sounded like she was trapped in a bottle throughout her range. I don't think her voice was ugly or beautiful. I'm neutral on that. I do think it was weird.

EXCUSE ME, I said she sang the role of TURANDOT over 30 times before she was ever recorded ON STAGE AND ON TOUR IN SOUTH AMERICA! Alone Santuzza is heavier than ANY role Sutherland ever sang. And Callas debuted at the age of 13 with the role of Santuzza and she sang it during all throughout the 1940’s. So do the math: 1940 to 1959 Callas could sing an E natural. And only declined cause she started partying, smoking and DRINKING in 1954 aside from losing about a 100 pounds. Callas was a genuine dramatic soprano. Sutherland was a lyric soprano with a WEAK voice all throughout so the high notes was what saved her voice and the gays who only go to the opera and desperately wait for the high notes only and disrespect the meaning of Opera.

Cold Gay Men. 🥶🌈 Read the book- “The Queen’s Throat” There’s a whole chapter on Callas and her devoted Gay Men. 🌈🙀 *Plus Callas didn’t start her affair & jet set life until 1960 & she didn’t smoke 🚬 I won’t bother explaining how her weight loss affected her voice because it was heavy early roles that hurt it & she stopped those & concentrated on bel canto, which made her career. Your Homophobia is showing….🤮

You're ridiculous. Anybody who talks about a 13 year old singing Santuzza without horror knows nothing about opera.

Callas' Traviata is remarkable, but not her high note, at least not in a good way.

First, I heard Sutherland, then her idiotic fans. I HATED her. It was late Sutherland you see. And, the middle voice wobble gave me a headache. Ghastly chest tones, unintelligible diction etc. Even the top notes that they were lauding were transparent and weak. Then, I heard her early Elvira. MY GOODNESS. She is truly remarkable in the right repertoire. Her Alcina is second to none. Her Elvira is glorious. Her Semiramide will not be topped anytime soon! WONDERFUL WONDERFUL singer!!!

I was about 6-drawing my cat while my parents were watching a tv special-on great 20th c.artists maybe. I remember seeing a male ballet dancer & said Mama ! He doesn’t have any pants on 🙀 & I also heard an Opera singer who wasn’t fat and I felt & saw her emotions. I remembered it, but didn’t know her name until high school. From then on- it was Only Callas 💔

Yes, Sutherland is great. But to compare her to Callas?! .... Not serious and not smart . Callas cannot, would not and WILL NOT be compared to anybdy else... Face it

That is true. Those hideous high notes are sui generis.

Both were great and cannot/should not be compared. Both had their tremendous strengths, and both had their flaws. This is because they were both human! We should love and appreciate both of these great ladies of opera for what they were! They were BOTH gifts to the opera world!

@brunopicaude30924 жыл бұрын
No, she used her voice with exceptional results during a period of 20 years. The real troubles began in 1959; this year she abandoned the role of Lucia because her Eflat began to be incertain (don't forget she was on stage at the age of 15 ! singing for example Cavalleria Rusticana...). But you are right, even 20 years is a too short period for all of us who dreamed to adore her voice during 40 years... at least...

+Mauro Torriani I am very impressed with Callas' high notes in this video. These are by far her best but not at Joan's level imo. And the poster gave Callas louder and more ambient clips which is not fair. As for Sutherland, the poster can probably post 1,000+ clips of Joan's highest notes, and they will sound identical because the note Db6 to Eb6 are part of her voice and easy for her.

I can not find so many techniques in Callas singing. Almost everything she sang was verismo, she sang a basic bel canto not so deep as Joan. Cheers \o/ Callas trills? HAHA Correcting your words: "was Callas able to do a messa di voce on a trill like Joan?" No, never haha

Jane notneed callas on Amphetamines too loose weight and sleeping pills to get to sleep and then fell for a Greek Macho arise hole. She might have been the best but burned out early then resorted to being dramatic rather than maintaining balance with everything. I still love her though,,, and thank the Gods Sutherland had Bonynge. Sutherland sang at top level for more than 30 years. Supreme.
