I love this film. Its serious and fun. Has all the tropes that I love. Moore is great. He was Bond to me growing up. I didnt watch Connery until much later. I love Scaramanga and Nick Nack. My favourite villain and henchman in the series. The fun house is great too. I even dont mind JW Pepper. I even like the theme song. Yes its silly but thats what I love about it. My favourite James Bond film. My second favourite is maybe Thunderball.

I've been to Hong Kong a few times and I have to say that it's probably one of my favorite cities that I’ve ever been to. When I first arrived there in 2011, I could feel such an affinity to the place as if I had been there many times before I instantly knew my way around and could even guide my wife who had been there before. The energy, the ambience, the food and the people, the place felt so alive like New York and 30 espresso’s.

Absolutely, it has (or had) a unique feel. A lot changed in the last few years, and I watched much of what unfolded. It was very sad to see, and I feel under-reported. I'm told some of the cultural life is returning, so I hope for the best for the city, and certainly hope to visit again.

Thanks for this great video. I hope to make it to Hong Kong some day.
@BritishCulture Жыл бұрын
Thank you! It is a great city. Many people who do visit only see HK Island, which I think is a pity. If you're able to get out to the Islands District, such as Lamma, you'll see such a different side to the former colony. Bond never makes it so far, but hopefully, you can!

We’ve talked about this before. Hip’s nieces are both probably doing kung fu. Yuen Qiu (short hair) was trained by the same Chinese opera master as Jackie Chan and Sammy Hung Chinese opera Kung fu. She appeared in small roles in Kung Fu films in 70s and 80s but had her breakout role in Kung Fu Hustle in 2002. I could never find Joie Vejjajiva (long hair) martial arts history. It says she grew up in Thailand so TDK is possible but Thai kickboxing is more likely. However, since she too is in the Asian film community, it is most likely that she was trained by Hong Kong martial art stunt coordinators, who are all trained in various forms of kung fu. Usually either opera kung fu like Jackie Chan or Hung Ga, which was the most common among all the Hong Kong martial arts stars.
@BritishCulture Жыл бұрын
We have indeed! I certainly see elements of TKD, but as we had discussed this, I mentioned Kung Fu. 😊
@yestoadventure007 Жыл бұрын
@@BritishCulture That wouldn't be hard, TKD came from Shotokan Karate, Shotokan came from Okinawan Karate, Okinawan Karate came from White Crane Kung Fu. It's all connected.
@BritishCulture Жыл бұрын
@@yestoadventure007 Absolutely, and I understand cross-training is not entirely unheard of? Certainly among TKD teachers I know (and have known) they usually encouraged focusing on one, whilst 'sampling' others to get a more rounded martial arts understand. Is that in line with your experience?
@alexlamas6324 Жыл бұрын
@@BritishCulture Absolutely but it depends on the teacher, some allow cross disciplines but others do not. After the kids like Yuen Qiu left the Chinese Opera Kung Fu school (also like Jackie Chan) most continued to learn from the fight choreographers of the various films they worked on. In Hong Kong they mostly picked up Hung Ga, Choy Le Fut and Wing Chun Kung Fu. I was also thinking of the fight choreographer for this scene who also was Hong Kong based.

All the travel shots get my wanderlust back up...even though I returned home from vacation only 2 short weeks ago! Which of the film locations from MWTGG is your all time favorite to visit in person?
@BritishCulture Жыл бұрын
Hi Frank! Seeing that Day Market where Bond searches for Lazar was great, partially for the thrill of finding it, and partially as it really added to my understanding of filming the scene. The HK Night Markets are famous, so rather than close one for a night of filming, they filmed in a Day Market at night. Also, it is quite close to Kowloon, rather than going to Macao. But my favourite is surely the Peninsula Hotel. I've been again and again for their afternoon teas, they really do make it special.

@@BritishCulture Yes, I know what you mean! I love participating in cultural "rituals" from yesteryear that have managed to carry over...so few have, it seems. My wife tells me I was born in the wrong century. I have a feeling you were too. I just spent a week in a hotel in Lisbon that offered daily tea with a piano concert...it was my favorite part of the day. We did not want to return to Arizona! Cheers, and thx for the great video!

Wow, someone who actually openly sings the praise of this 007/Bond entry! (Many reviewers rank this in the middle third, at best. Empirically, this film fared poorly at the box office compared to both Live and Let Die and TSWLM.)

Thomas, you’re a solid Bondophile and an excellent presenter. Plus, you wear that safari jacket better than Mr Moore. But . . . Your favourite Moore film is THIS ONE, really? Sorry to be far apart from you on this, but I’ve always ranked it near the bottom of the Bonds. Fabulous locations and good actors (leaving out Britt Ekland) were wasted on this film! I’m not just referring to Christopher Lee, but also to Soon Teck-Oh, Marne Maitland, and Richard Loo. If this had been a straightforward thriller focusing on Bond and Scaramanga, leading to the final duel, it could have been exciting. Unfortunately, it was cluttered with: the Solex/energy subplot; the henchman dwarf; the villain’s fun-house; one of the dumbest women in the series (Ekland); a bigoted sheriff on vacation in Thailand (?); and the worst kung-fu sequence ever put on film! Bond comes across as a bumbling fool. Such was the result of leaving things in the hands of Guy Hamilton and Tom Mankiewicz, who would have been better suited to the “Pink Panther” series - maybe!

Hello, hello! Thank you for your kind words about the jacket, it is a favourite, and one I've worn quite a bit, at least, when I'm in the correct environments. As for the film, for a long time, especially when young, this was my favourite of all the Bonds; guaranteed to make me smile, and hold my attention for the full duration. It was actually only very recently I discovered this was such an unusual view among fans. Of course, it's so different from Fleming and Connery, but then again, when I want Fleming and Connery I have them both happily to hand. One of my favourite aspects of Bond is that there's one to suit every mood. I don't think I can explain much more why I enjoy it so much beyond what I've said in the video. My taste varies from FRWL to this, to... well, my favourite Timothy Dalton film... I'm looking forward to revisiting that one, although I know License to Kill divides opinion almost as much as this one does!
@thomaschacko6320 Жыл бұрын
@@BritishCulture Well put, Thomas! As you said, there’s a Bond to suit every mood. Being an older Bondophile, though, I was never in the mood for the Hamilton/Mankiewicz style. Perhaps being a diehard Lazenby fan colours my perspective. But it also leads me to view “For Your Eyes Only” as the best Moore film. The right script and director enhanced Moore’s performance and made him a believable Bond, something neither Hamilton nor Lewis Gilbert could do. (Gilbert couldn’t even coax a performance out of Connery!) I look forward to your review of “Licence To Kill” - one of my personal favourites. See, a serious Bond! This film was given short shrift by many fans and critics; those who, having been weaned on a steady Moore diet, found it too much for their delicate nerves! Keep up the good work! However - I must ask a favour of you. You look good in a safari outfit or tux (without Moore’s flare bottoms). But please, PLEASE, don’t make use of the casual wear from “Diamonds Are Forever” or (sorry) “Man With The Golden Gun”!

@@thomaschacko6320 On 'For Your Eyes Only', I think we really do have common ground. In fact, after I've done my favoruite for each actor, that's one I really want to cycle around to, either here on KZbin, or on my podcast (of the same name). It's an outstanding film, and a good candidate for 'most underrated Bond film'.

Of all the Bond actors, Roger Moore is my least favourite by a very long way. I love most other things that he has appeared in {particularly The Saint} but he never seems to take Bond seriously. Even setting that aside, when I see characters such as Nick Nack, and the absolutely awful Sheriff J W Pepper, I am given no reason to take any of the film seriously. {Was anyone ever supposed to take the Moore Bonds seriously??} That said, I love your point about Christopher Lee's having Bond-potential. I had never stopped to consider that and I must say that I agree with you.
@BritishCulture Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you like the suggestion of Christopher Lee as Bond in the '50s. As for Moore, well, Tosca isn't for everyone as Mr. White says in Quantum of Solace. Funnily enough, Quantum of Solace isn't for everyone either! 😄
