I had some "weird" feelings while being in Germany... (Cultural differences Germans & Asia)
Recently, I spent three weeks at my home in Germany. It was my first time being back home after almost three years of traveling Asia, southeast Asia especially. While being at home I encountered severyl cultural differences between Germany ans southeast Asia. And I also had some mixed feeling about my time at home. Today, I am going to share these feelings with you, to give you an insight into my life behind all this traveling.

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia, currently in Malaysia, making Malaysia travel vlogs. It is my goal here on this channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see much tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.
There will be almost daily uploads on this channel, during the next months from Southeast Asia. I will be traveling Southeast Asia, showing you around local places and try lots of different local food. Join the journey if you are interested in experiencing Malaysia now from a more authentic local point of view.

Hello Ken, I am Roy, June's son actually. I have lived in Thailand before, and spent very long times in Malaysia (also visited Singapore and Hong Kong ). I very much prefer southeast Asia, especially Malaysia. The people are more relaxed and approachable, you are quite right. It is easy to meet peope and make friends there. There is food available all day everywhere, and such a big variety of delicious things. In Malay, there is nasi campur (choose from mixed dishes), nasi ayam (rice with chicken),nasi lemak, rendang; all kinds of noodles, fried or in soup or in a spicy sauce;.........then if you want a change there are all kinds of Chinese and Indian foods, and you can get a pizza etc if you want it!...............It is sunny almost every day ( I don't like cold weather and it makes me feel ill). I woiuld like to recommend you improve your Malay a bit more: it helps to make contact with people who are not good at English. Thank you for your videos, and the very best luck to you!

Ken, I completely relate to what you say in the first half of the video. I visited Europe 2 summers when I was 18 and 20 and fell in love with it. When I was 23, I lived in Barcelona for just over a year and visited many other places in Europe. When I returned home to California, I found that my friends and family were doing exactly what they had been doing when I left. I had had all these amazing, life-changing experiences that they could not relate to. I eventually just had to accept that. I now travel to SE Asia on business regularly. I "discovered" Malaysia about 4 years ago and visited several times before Covid. I am back in Malaysia now for the first time in over 2 years and it feels great. I love Malaysia. Love your videos. Keep on traveling. I am 64. My advice: do it while you can. Guy

I did what you did Ken when I was 20, Thailand , all of Asia, in the end could not live happily back in Canada. Now 26 years living in Asia with 2 kids. Hard to be away from family but follow your heart and the times you go home are precious and the times you live abroad are also precious. We can have it all if we have the desire! I get what youve said! I also lived in Indonesia! Sumatra and Java! amazing and I cant wait to see your videos!

You’ve found a way to balance the “Rule of Three”. To live the travel life requires 3 things; Money, Time, and Energy. When we are young we often have the time and energy but not the money to travel. In middle life we make some money and have energy but not the time for travel. Once we get old we usually have the money and time, but energy begins to wain. Enjoy the the solution you have worked so hard to make reality. In the game of life you have already achieved success.

I think it is easier to travel and have adventures when you are young and single. Not that you can't do it when you are older (I'm 61 and still at it) but you have more energy now and don't need to take children or a partner into consideration yet. Or having a pet, owning a home or other things that influence where you live. It's good to evaluate every so often what makes you happy and what you want in the future, and adjust your plans to make it happen!

The monotony of every day life wasn't for us. We've been watching you for a while quietly in the background and can honestly say you have a good soul. You're blessed and deserve the best life you can live. We are traveling through Vietnam right now and headed to every country so maybe we'll see you along the way. Oh TDD in d house ... Hi John and Christine .... Didn't know u guys have been following Ken ... Ya Ken is one of d Travel Food Warriors Abroad team along side d Travelgramers, Food and Footprints and d Jetlag Warriors that d Malaysian medias had referred to as Malaysian Tourism Accidental Ambassadors bcoz of their almost daily videos about Malaysia ( West or Peninsular Malaysia ) that they made during d Malaysia's Lockdown or MCO ( Movement Control Order ) period due to d crazy global widespread of Corona virus for almost d whole year of 2020 ( starting from 18 March 2020 ) onwards .... They had extensively introduced, promoted, explored and showcased West Malaysia or Peninsular Malaysia like no other youtubers had ever done before, especially Ken thru' his youtube channel Ken Abroad and Steve and Ivana thru' their channel d Jetlag Warriors ( almost daily vlogging about Malaysia from 18 March 2020 until early of 2021 ) ... Imagine that .... No other youtubers had done this so extensively like them .... Thus d title of " Malaysia's Ambassadors " given to them is very aptly .... Kudos to them .... 👏👍

Oh yes, @@UncleBin1269. They give a detailed insights about West Malaysia from a foreigner’s point of view (which foreigners would be able to relate more). Ken, you're so lucky you can travel whereever you want. Im, on the other hand, stuck in M'sia. Im originally from Eastern Europe, came to M'sia to study in 2000, but due to some unfortunate twist of fate became a refugee and now waiting for my relocation to another country. Though i love M'sia and its ppl, being unable to travel or work really gets me down. Miss my homeland but going back now is out of question. Been watching your videos and following your adventures. It's good that you've found something you are passionate about. Good luck in your future undertakings.

Hi Ken, I have just returned from Thailand after booking 20 days there. I am 61 and have been traveling over Asia for 20 years. Its great. But this time I was very unwell. Out of 20 days I spent 14 in a hotel room sick. This is the time when you miss family and your home. But while you are fit and healthy you must follow your goals and travel ! I am now recovering and looking forward to going back to Asia. Thank you for your amazing videos. Please keep traveling and sharing your great adventures.

Just do it Ken while you are still young. Just do it. A bit of sharing.......I studied in USA for 6 years, graduated in 1990 and came back to Malaysia. Got married 2 years later. On my graduation day, my parents offered to go with them to travel round the world but I rejected for personal reasons. I regretted until now. After I got married, I managed to do some travellings with my husband but even then they were just short term holidays. So again, I regretted I did not travel the world earlier. I do not know when I can travel again. Don't be like me. Just do it.

Hi Ken, great to see you back in Asia, it was nice to see you home and Mam and sister in Germany. My story is too long to tell here today but I will share a little of my life experience. I am 67 years young now I lived in Dublin, Rep Ireland till I was 22 years old and finish 5 year motor mechanic apprenticeship. I move to Surry in England with a friend who had traveled all over world already I had always wanted to see the world since I was young boy, I applied for PR visa for South Africa ( had older sister there ) to Canada, America, and Australia. I got all of them. Long story cut short we ended up driving a Land Rover with two other English guys from England to Singapore. Fell in love with Thailand from the very first time 1978 ended up working and living base in Australia work was plentiful and good money to support my travel for many years. They only thing I will say was I really miss my family especially as I got older I traveled many many times home to see then when they were alive, but I wished I had more spent more time with them but still not too many regrets. The distance was a bit of a problem and back in the days no Mobile phone so it was hard. Family is very important but living your life and dreams is most important. I could talk for hours with a fellow traveler only we understand what it’s like the excitement of seeing something new and smells and cultures. I also love the smiling faces in Asia especially Thailand I marry a beautiful lady nearly 28 years ago still together. Keep up the great work Cheers Irish Paul

the sun and warmth makes all the difference . even in winter if its sunny people are far more happy let alone when it is hot . and no winter clothes layers to keep warm its just horrible and early dark < which is fine in a hot country > but not in europe as it gets dark early and colder as the evening goes on

Wow, it was surprising to hear your frank assessment of Germany and its people. Reminded me of how I felt when I first ventured out of India and travelled to Hanover, Germany. Cold weather, Cold people and not much variety in food either. I admired the technological prowess of the German nation and meticulousness of whatever they do, but as a society I felt so many things were missing. Later on I crossed into Switzerland and such a difference in the peoples attitude. There was a smile and warmth in people. I guess each nation needs to learn from each other. 😃

Well Ken, you are a great guy doing the best you can to make it happen the way you want it. It's obvious that life is very different in Europe than in southeast Asia. You don't find the smiles here because we are always running, chasing o dreaming of having a better lifestyle and makes us people living for work and not the opposite way. I wish I could have been there for much longer in my life but once you have a family and a business to run it becomes almost impossible. Keep updating us on your beautiful travelling adventures and forget about Europe, not of your family of course. I guess we like to think that we are little part you. Hey Ken, first up welcome back to South East Asia! Thanks for sharing your reflective thoughts. My take is home is where you make it. While routine and structure may work for some, others prefer the exciting unpredictability of the unknown. Wherever a person is at in terms of phase of life or location, what matters most are the relationships we form with others and most importantly with ourselves. Keep your informative and interesting vids coming! By the way I really liked watching your vids from Germany, beautiful country, looking forward to more clips of your home town in the future too.

Hi! Ken, that was a great comparison! I think, like many here you love travel and everything that comes with traveling. I have enjoyed all your videos and can understand how you start missing the active and vibrant life styles and cultures in South Asia. Having said that I love the quietness and the peaceful life (boring for many including my family from Sri Lanka!) I am experiencing living in rural USA for 30 yrs. It is actually very much like your home town in Germany. But I do love to watch vlogs of people who travel while enjoying a quiet life here at home🤭Probably, there are more people who love to travel than the opposite. Best of luck for your travels in Asia for the next 4 months. Keep posting 👍

Since then I cannot imagine myself sitting in just one place and working in the same town for years. I also fell in love with south east Asia in a blink of an eye. I have been in Malaysia for 3 weeks just before the pandemic and the thought in my head came up on the second day already that I wanna live there. My plan is to move there in the end of this year or so, let see. If u have any valuable info about how to move there for more than 3 month, let me know pls. It's good to know about your future plan and those places mentioned surely have lots of charm for you to discover, people to interact and many exotic foods to savour. Anyhow, you definitely had the will, nice persona and amiable, freedom and resources to travel, possess good health and mind and moreover had a caring, supportive mother and sister back home. So keep on doing what u love, take care!

The feeling of homesickness. I had that when I was 16 when I am at boarding school in Perak. Sometimes you feel like crying but my dormmates always cheer me up. Travelling back home by bus for holidays and I feel like I got over it after I got into college. I went from Kuala Lumpur to Perlis, it feel more adventurous and it was my first time riding the night train and it was a great experience.

Hello Ken, it's great that you've chosen what your life desire. Never fear anything. Enjoy what you do and live comfortably. We are all born with two inherent fear..ie. The fear of loud noise and the fear of falling( You may have experience this, during your sleep and get a shock of falling off your bed or from a height).....Perth, W. Australia

Awww.....You definitely belong back in Malaysia. One of my BFFs just moved there this week, and we are planning to retire there soon as well. My husband and I were there 10 years ago and just fell in love with that country. We went everywhere from Penang to Sarawak and Sabah! But of course it is such a big country and there is so much to see, there never seems to be enough time. We follow you on IG too and really appreciate all of your posts and videos. Thank you for all your hard work and for all the information you provide everyone. I hope that the next time we go, we can bump into you! We are huge fans!

Hi Ken, selamat datang (welcome) to Malaysia. Enjoy your forthcoming trip to East Malaysia. It is the same to me as I came out from hometown (64 km away) over 40 years to Kuala Lumpur. When sometime back to my hometown (kampung), things are still the same, no changes and is now not use to it.

in 1 of my visits to my country we talked about that . i said everyone i see could not be nicer but still i feel that i dont quite belong there anymore and some things do change people have moved away etc . and people with the same experience say the same . and one cannot pick up where we left off . a lady said when she visits her home town 2 hours away from the place she lives she feels the same and said to me . to feel like that one does not have to live abroad like myself . the same with you . we should not feel a bit like strangers in our country and place where we were born and lived .
