EMI's Masters of Rock comps did indeed originate from Germany but were sold all over Europe. The other artists featured in the series were, in no particular order, Wizzard, Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, The Band, ELO, Rare Earth, East of Eden, Edgar Broughton Band, Steve Miller Band, Grand Funk Railroad and, yes, Geordie (which was the one I bought around 1976 for five Deutschmarks, I think. I actually still own it).

I find that live albums are often the best 'best of' for those bands that were/are much better live than on studio albums and as such are usually the only albums by them you need. Examples for me are Cheap Trick's 'Live At Budokan' (the 2-cd re-issue), The Tubes 'What Do You Want from Live', AC/DC;s 'If you want blood), Deep Purple's 'Made in Japan' and Thin Lizzy's 'Live and Dangerous'. I know many will disagree but it's just my 10 cents worth.

Black Sabbath Greatest Hits on NEMS records and the amazing Bruegel painting “The Triumph of Death” on the cover! As a 12 year old this was my incredible introduction to the greatest metal band of all time. The painting perfectly describes the mood of Sabbath and also introduced me to fine art! Also “Relics” by Pink Floyd issued on Music for Pleasure was a great compilation of their best early stuff including the Nile song ( total punk/metal song way ahead of its time and seemingly ignored in music history!) Also ELO Greatest Hits with photo of the medallion on the cover and Geoff Lynne”s letter in the back is an amazing compilation which preoccupied my youth! And T. R. A. S. H. by the Tubes on A and M was great.

Depeche Mode - The Singles 81-85 - for me they really made a massive effort with their singles in comparison to a lot of the album tracks. Thin Lizzy - The Collecion was one that was given to me in a vinyl collection and I was blown away by their early tracks like Return of the Farmer's Son Attention Black Sabbath - was another gifted record that had tracks from the first three albums and sounded fantastic too The Essential Jean Michelle Jarre will always hold a special place for me. Great stuff and one of the Magnetic Fields tracks is a totally different version than appears on the album - I loved this version so much when I finally got Magnetic Fields many years later it totally threw me and still sounds totally weird to me now Siouxsie and the Banshees - Once Upon a Time - this is the only Banshees album I had as a kid and it's killer. Another band where you can tell they paid special attention to their singles. Hendrix - Smash Hits was a killer comp which also included the great 51st Anniversary but also the weird and really badly produced Stars that Play with Laughing Sam's Dice Exorcising Ghosts by Japan too was the first Japan release I got although totally dominated by Tin Drum and the most popular tracks from Gentlemen Take Polaroids you also get some really great instrumental interludes and a couple of tracks from Quiet Life.

The reason to get an album instead of greatest hits sometimes is when it has a theme. On which, each song was carefully written and organized. Also, it could be because of the album art, the liner notes, the sleeves, and the other perks you get on the album holder itself when there's a theme. For example, What's Going On by Marvin Gaye is a lot different than just his greatest hits. Electric Ladyland was much different than Jimi's greatest hits. So I usually get both.

Hot Rocks -- Rolling Stones Perfect Best Of, because it included all the hit singles not on albums, but album cuts that were never released as singles. Sequenced beautifully, breaking their career into three phases -- early hits, mid-sixties experiments, and the late sixties return to the blues. Side 4 is bits and pieces. Sound and Vision -- Bowie. Great selection of his 70s work, including hits, key album cuts, and unreleased material. Decade -- Neil Young. Great for the same reasons as above. And I totally agree on The Beach Boys, All you need is a Greatest Hits album. There are many to choose from, my favorite is Endless Summer.

I had that Beach Boys album and I agree, I had that Cream on cassette back in the day and now have it on original vinyl, I do agree, the studio albums are patchy. I am trying to find original vinyl Budgie albums (a band you've never mentioned), but they are so expensive, I did however manage to pick up a best of which is great. The only problem I have with Best of albums is that they are not. Take Queen, all you'll get is the singles, you'll never find Brighton Rock, I'd rather have the albums , Queen have so many brilliant sleeper tracks on their albums, and the same goes for Thin Lizzy, there is no way you cannot have Jailbreak and miss out on Warrior and Emerald, all you will generally get are the singles, more a Greatest Hits than Best of.

On the Beach Boys, I don’t disagree that Pet Sounds is overrated, but they have a lot of albums that no one ever considers or remembers that are quite good. Occasionally I will listen to every album in an artist’s history from start to end. Only on rare occasions is it amazing (e.g. Herbie Hancock). Most of the time, it becomes a total slog (e.g. Rolling Stones). But it’s definitely a way to realize all the hidden gems that you somehow never heard or ignored. Joni Mitchell was quite eye-opening for me. I missed a lot of her albums. And Beach Boys discography was a very interesting and enjoyable listen and there are some definite hidden gems in it. Surf’s Up, Carl & the Passions, Holland, Sunflower.
