Perks of Filipino Accent : You can mimic every accent, and assert your vocal dominance.
@Ckawauchi35

Your statement is so far from the truth. People can detect Filipino accents from a million miles away regardless of level. The Filipino language is a great backdrop if you want to learn Romance languages, like Italian and Spanish. But if it's English you're trying to learn and speak like the natives, good luck. You will have to employ an expensive speech coach for that. This is not just a problem that Filipinos face--all people of different cultural backgrounds experience it. It depends on where you learned a certain language as you were growing up. I learned Filipino and Japanese when I was growing up so I have no accent in both languages. Now, that I have lived in the USA for 35 years, I still can detect a Filipino accent in my English every now and then. I have better natural accent (or lack of it) in Italian and Spanish but I don't know about my French pronunciation bc I have never recorded myself. This is not to say I can understand French--I just get a kick out of pronouncing their words correctly. So, no don't get ahead of yourself and think that having Filipino as your native language has given you more advantages than the rest of the world. You sound unknowing.

In other words, English is the common ground in the Philippines. Just remember, Filipinos can adapt to the whole world because of their English accent. The whole world are serviced by the Filipinos, yes sir - the outsourcing industry. There are no ratings in English accents. It's the grammar and essence that counts.

My native languages are English and Tagalog. I have a North American accent (like Connecticut, Jersey) and I don’t carry over that accent when I speak Tagalog. It is such a pleasure to stumble into your video! I envy you for your mastery of Tagalog. You speak Tagalog better than I can ever learn to do, and for the young adult that you are, you possess a level of wisdom and integrity that, sadly, not too many in your generation have. I am a 79-year-old retiree who have lived in the US since coming to New York for graduate studies in 1969. I am a native of Aklan Province (of which the famous Boracay Island is a part) and, therefore, Tagalog is not my first language. In my time, Tagalog was taught as a required, discrete foreign language starting in the 5th grade of elementary school and throughout high school. Of course, throughout our four years of high school, we also had to complete our course work in Castilian Spanish in addition to Tagalog. (In those days, Castilian Spanish was one of the three official languages of the Philippines.) I only developed an acceptable level of proficiency in conversational Tagalog during my college years in Manila and, even then, some classmates who were native speakers of Tagalog would tease me because I spoke “book or written” Tagalog, but that did not bother me. You know that Filipinos tend to be regionalistic and, as such, we Visayans mainly socialized among ourselves on and off campus. But I digress! Suffice it that I sincerely appreciate your affinity toward my homeland and appreciation for the Filipino nation. I shall be looking forward to watching more of your videos in the future. Thank you for the pleasure.

My take on this is, retaining your own accent, Filipino, Thai, Korean, British, Scottish, German etc, etc English accent is good. I just don’t know why people think there’s a better accent. At least you are unique in your own way. You’re distinguished where you came from and you can communicate and reach out universally as you mentioned to a wide range of people. Keep it up. Your Filipino-English accent is remarkable and impressive. A lot of people has been living in the USA yet they still don’t know how to speak English esp those who came over at an older age. I migrated here in the USA 4 years ago. So yung engish accent ko is not american but I'm pretty sure it is far better than a typical Pinoy engish accent na ma emphasize yung A, I, E at R. I asked my American friends kung ano masasabi nila sa english accent ko. They said Filipino English accent is cute and very gentle in their ears. Medyo concious kasi ako noon sa accent ko kasi di nila maintindihan yung ibang words ko like Mercedez Benz in american accent it sounds like Mersayedeeze Benzz or yung Twenty sa atin is twenty pero sa kanila is twenee or Internet is innernet and yung Rubitusin sa kanila is Rahbeetahsun. But at least I'm glad they love the filipino english accent.

Have been here in the US for almost 40 years. Usually what people say to you is not necessarily what they’re thinking. It’s small talk and they’re trying to be nice. I have an old very Filipino name and often when they ask me how to pronounce it, they will say , “that’s a pretty name” 😂. Not one Filipino i grew up thought my name was great. Also whenever i come across people who I couldn’t understand because of their very thick accent, I wouldn’t say to their face, thats a terrible accent. I would just concentrate to try to understand them better. After 40 years here, i have better understanding of what’s true and what small talk.

Filipino is more like a combination of different languages (not dialects) in the Philippines, with Tagalog at it's base... As the Philippines began to be more collectively unite we adapt on using or borrowing words from other languages here in ph such as ilokano, cebuano, espanyol, and etc. terms. Tagalog is like the Old English of Modern English, as it is to Filipino. Even English is getting into the mix

@@Milliardo55 that's true, Juwon even studied in UP for college, so talagang na-neutralize na into Filipino yung accent nya. Wow! You're not a Filipino by blood but I admire your Tagalog, you really master it. Don't worry about your English accent... what is important is your diction... very clear and phonetic. Keep it up, cheers.

Most people who criticize others for speaking English with an accent probably are unaware that they too speak English with an accent. There is no such thing as "no accent" English. The other thing that was funny to me was how many people were surprised that you spoke English with a Filipino accent given that you spent most of your childhood living in the Philippines. What would be surprising is if you didn't. Also, I've noticed that there are many Koreans taking English lessons in the Philippines. So, I guess there will be many more Koreans speaking English with a Filipino accent. How great is that?

Well the best reason why there's alot of koreans and japanese study english in the phil. Is because it's a LOOOOT cheaper than studying in western countries.

Filipino talks like they are singing when we they speak. .the tone..and maybe reason why Filipino sings so well.. that makes you so unique being heard by Korean and other nationals. They commented the ranking of best countries speaking in english... well.. they speak the language-but sometimes no proper grammar - tenses etc..they slang their terminologies..

Filipino are neutralingual. Pagkaintindi ko sa article na yon, it's how and why it is easier for Filipino to learn any language it's bcos hindi strict yung buka ng bibig natin and yung nga we were exposed to diff accents from provincial dialects to foreign languages. Mas madali din ang comprehension kapag nag-aaral ng ibang language. And kung mag-concentrate talaga sila it's easier to learn the intonation and accents. Yung lang talaga sa pagtuturo ng English di natututukan sa school, usually, yung nakakasabay sa English class were early readers na bago pa pumasok sa school.

Ay tama ka Juwon!!!! haha...... ay pag sa ulaga ng mga iyan! Obviously, you'll get used to the so called "neutral accent" since majority of your life ay dito sa Pinas, Pag nag Ching-lish yan, or British accent magtaka kayo. (no racism intended). Anyway, I'm proun that someone like you and Jessica Lee are proud of learning English here in the PH despite the fact that some people would criticize you because of your accent,

Philippine English is a blend of the local and the English language. It is a legit and respectable hybrid dialect like the rest (Korean English, Japanese English, Indian English...) But there are people in the Philippines who have a different variety, such as the call center accent, which sounds close to the natives' accent.

In the US and the UK, people like it when your English has an accent other than American or UK. It sounds more sophisticated, so people with non-native English tend to speak in presentations to make the company sound more sophisticated.

i know this one korean girl back in the late 90s who spoke tagalog but with slight korean accent, studied in the same school, same grade. Yours is def way better. Everyone liked her so much that they forgot that shes not filipino. We treated her like a local. It was around that time when theres a surge of korean expats living in the us.
