Omg I have experienced this! I studied in France for a year when I was in college, and have gone through almost all the stages, probably 3.5 lol Kasi hindi naman ako na fully integrated, but I got adjusted in sa French society by my 3rd month. Then when I came back sa US(born in Philippines pero grew up sa US), na culture shock ako going back home 🤣 I started missing the boulangeries, fromageries, the public transportation, the historical buildings, etc.

One good thing being a filipino is that we don’t worry about culture shock since we try and can adapt to any place, situation or environment easily and asap. Our philosophy is: that’s part of life and God will provide; why worry.

Filipinos do too. Everyone does that goes someplace that is unfamiliar and culturally different but the only difference with pinoys is they adapt so well that some forget their own culture. I know plenty of full blooded pinoys who know very little or none at all about Pinoy culture. I'm only 1/4 Pinay but I've met others who are so shocked that I know the culture and speak my grandma's dialect. Meanwhile, the other Asians I know are the opposite. They make sure their kids never forget.

Yup. I definitely experience Reverse Culture Shock when I go back to the Philippines. I can’t drive in Manila or in the provinces anymore, although I had been driving in Manila for several years before I left the country. But I’m sure if I stay long enough in the country, I’ll get used to everything again.

I like the way you explained about the stages of culture shock. It is very true. I am an OFW in Japan and I've been living and working here for more than 6 years now. And honestly, I've just gotten to the 4th stage honestly on the 5th year. For other people, they can adapt much earlier depending on how fast they'd embrace the foreign society they're in and how much rooted they've been in their own culture. I'm a Filipino who immigrated with my family to Montreal (Canada) over 35 years ago and was expat to Manila a few years ago. My first reverse culture shock was how everyobe used kuya (older brother), ate (olser sister) and nanay (mother) to anyone regardless of age to you as long as they are about your age or older. Second was the cleaning of table in a fast food area, we are so used to cleaning up our mess here in Montreal after a meal that it was automatic for me but once in Manila, I was being scolded by the cleaners that I was taking away their duties 😊. The other was the tipping - when you are used to leaving 10-20% of tip in Canada then to the least you should the server in Manila, this was a little bit humiliating for me but I was scolded by all of my friends everytime.

Your love of the Philippines, your sadness when you flew out, are unsurprisingly, emotionally, understandably, lovable. Your Tagalog is perfect, together with the accent. Your English sounds Pinoy-ish, too---like a Filipino speaking English. You are funny, too. Be yourself and don't change. 😉 On second thought, I would not consider your scenario "reverse culture." Having brought to the Philippines when you were just 4 years, I would posit that at that point in time, you had not been exposed or experienced Korean culture yet, being that you still had baby milk in your mouth. So, in my view, you are just undergoing a plain one-way culture shock, no reverse yet. 😑

It's so interesting to hear your experiences of reverse culture shock! I, too, had reverse culture shock when I went to the Philippines to stay with my dad. I'm fully Filipino, but I was born and raised in the US. So, my home culture is America since I spent pretty much my entire life here. I ended up staying in the Philippines for almost 3 years, and while I've visited in the past, I've never stayed for more than 3 months. I got the first culture shock when I had to adjust to living in the Philippines for so long. Nag-adjust naman ako sa Pilipinas kasi full immersion sa kultura at wika yun, pero at least may background ako ng Tagalog gawa ng upbringing ko. Nagsalita ng magulang ko ng Tagalog sa bahay, pero yung mga sagot ko ay English. 😅 But when I got back to the US after adjusting to the Philippines, that was when I got my reverse culture shock. Tama ka naman sa mga phases ng ganyan. First, I was so glad to be back and talking to people who could understand my native tongue, and everything is so organized and efficient. (Sidenote: Sobrang taas ang fluency mo sa Tagalog. Kung narinig ko lang ng salita mo at hindi ko nakita na Koreana ka, akala ko na ikaw ay purong Pilipina talaga.) Then, I realized that every day life is very different. I had to readjust to the faster pace of everything here as compared to the Philippines, as well as how to interact with Americans. After about half a year, I finally started to feel normal again. Since your home culture is the Philippines, you'll definitely feel reverse culture shock when you go back there. But in time, it will feel all right. I think the initial shock of going to somewhere that you're not familiar with is stronger than the reverse, but maybe that's different for everyone. Also, this was my first time seeing your videos, so I'm a new subscriber now.

Interesting. I am a Canadian that has lived in Korea for 24 years. I might have encountered some culture shich but before that I had lived in Europe for 8 years. When I go back to Canada I feel a little culture shock because things have changed but people there expect me to know because I look and sound like them. But I don’t know how some things work or heard of them and really Canadians get impatient because I ask questions about things that are obvious to them they think everyone knows. Actually last time I was there I was glad to get back to Korea where everything is normal.

After living in Australia for over a year I returned to Manila and got so bothered seeing beggars and homeless people in the streets. Nadudurog Yun puso ko. Dude, I experienced the same thing when I tried KFC (and McDonald's) as well sa Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Not gonna lie. I’ve never seen an ethnic Korean that’s also a Filipino national. Also I’ve never heard of reverse culture shock before. Edit: I’ve probably would have never guessed she’s actually Korean considering there are many Filipina women that can look like her in some way. For example, my wife is Filipina but some people mistake her for Japanese due to her fair complexion. For the record, I’m Filipino myself but I was mistaken for Latino a couple of times due to my light-brown complexion. Which is a little funny to me considering I’m actually learning Spanish due to the Philippines slowly reintegrating the language. Also for the record: My wife was born and raised in the Philippines whereas I was born and raised in the United States. My wife is currently living with me in the U.S.

Me naman when I had a one-month vacation in my home country, the Philippines, after living in South Korea for about 2 years: Hindi na sanay sumakay ng jeep. Iniisip ko noon eh baka kasi sa loob ng 2 years na wala ako, hindi na pwedeng sumakay sa nakasanayan kong sakayan, baka hindi na pwedeng magbaba ng pasahero kung saan-saan, etc. Pero I regained my hometown-self after a week... So basically, I'm already at that fifth stage of culture shock na "Oh! I forgot it's like here"... Yun lang...

Yung tungkol sa spam, nanonood ako ng Korean cooking show dito sa YT and may narinig akong tip sa kaniya na hugasan daw ang ham bago iluto para mabawasan yung alat, so baka ganon din ginagawa nila sa mga restos para lesser saltiness. Pagpapaalam part, yes (both me and my sis both mid and late 30s still update our parents if we have arrived or where we are especially pag nasa labas pa kami tapos pamidnight na hahahaha) Tapos yung sa dry air, baka kaya mostly ng mga musicians use humidifier para sa voice nila.
