Shanghai, China. A city home to nearly 30 million people, after getting my 144 hour visa, I had a jaw dropping day to say the least. Starting in the centre making our way to the 'bund' we come across all sorts in this episode... From scams, food, friendly locals and all round getting sense for what the city is like. Beijing, wuhan and alot of others are on my list so I'm excited to release more episodes very soon.

Will, an Indian here who has lived in China. Why are you so bothered with cameras? How are they affecting you? They are there for security. If a crime is committed, the cameras would help to nab the criminal. I'm sure you wouldn't want a gun fight to break out, or get mugged or sit through drug deal underway at a fuel station because, "it's a free world", right? What is the privacy you are talking about? You are free to walk around with a semi-automatic rifle, or a handgun prominently tucked to your holster which can actually scare people (and kills a lot). You call that freedom. But you get so uncomfortable when someone has cameras all around so that no one scare anyone and people can move around in peace. Isn't it? What is the privacy you are talking about? Nobody is bothered if you get cozy with someone, take photos or kiss. Chinese authorities have much more work to do that tracking people kissing, photoshooting. But if plan to roam around in nothing but underwear, bikini, or a thong or body paint or whatever, then not just China, Asia itself is not the place for you.

Of course they CAN be used for surveillance purposes and in some cases they ARE used for surveillance. But that is not the point. The problem is, as long as something in China theoretically CAN be used for nefarious purposes, "China" is automatically found guilty, no due process or evidential standard needed. Nobody cares about Chinese laws that constrain the police from using private data and everyone from the West seems to automatically assume that the Chinese, who are almost like aliens to them, must be thinking and behaving in completely opposite ways. No, the Chinese are just humans like people everywhere else. We do not need a totally different mindset to understand China. Just use some common sense.

It is completely safe to walk around China for a foreigner. Unfortunately, the opposite is less and less true. (more and more Asians are attacked in the USA) And in France, where I live, Asian tourists are often targetted by thieves, scammers, etc. It is like that in Paris for a long time. A Japanese friend had her bag stolen in Paris. She was surprised when she went to the police station: the papers to fill out were already written in Japanese! Because the police were so accustomed to foreigners that their forms were already in the language of the most targeted tourists. 😅

Have you heard about PRISM, the Pegazus program? The ECHELON system? Have you heard about telephone conversations of European leaders spied on by the United States? Have you heard about the sensors installed by the United States (with the help from Denmark) on underwater Internet cables to spy on Europe? Did you know about backdoors on some old Sun microsystems hardwares? Have you read these Articles confirming that Twitter was infiltrated by FBI agents? Yes, you are right. Don't be too paranoic about the cameras, the average ones on the street are not AI powered and believe me or not, there's also privacy laws about the limits of the information you can take from a person on the public. Why would you be afraid of the cameras if you're not going to commit any crime? The country is also very camera friendly for that reason; people there think that If "you don't allow them to film you in the public, then you must be hidding something not very good". I can bet you that you won't be allowed to film everything in Japan or Korea. It's mindblowing how conditioned people are by the western media when they visit China.

just some tips 😅 1 - just say 'ni hao' to greet someone. no one says 'ni hao ma' as you can probably tell by now from replies. 2 - most people who approach you will just be curious and want to say hello or even take a picture since a lot of people at tourist areas are not locals to shanghai but tourists from other parts of china. for many chinese, they never seen a foreigner in person. if anyone approaches you for anything other than a greeting, they are trying to sell you something so to get rid of them, say 'bu yao' which means I don't want. 3 - the cameras are for security like in any other major city around the world. per capita, there are actually more cameras in london than anywhere in china. especially as a foreigner and a man, you can walk around at 2am and be totally safe even in a totally dark alley. you will even see women or teenagers out and about alone at night. only fools prone to propaganda will believe they can keep track of what over a billion people do daily. as long as you don't do anything stupid and obviously illegal, no one will care. no one will care if you are filming all day so just enjoy.

That's right, he asked you twice whether you're cold or not. If you don't understand Chinese at all, you can actually say hello. The vast majority of Chinese people can understand yes, no, hello, goodbye, and numbers up to ten. Although saying hello in Chinese can indeed gain a lot of goodwill, people will mistakenly think that you know Chinese, which will cause trouble for future communication. So, you can simply say hello, which is just a suggestion.

In Australia, even if there are cameras, the police will not investigate for minor cases, such as if your laptop is stolen, or your car is hit while parked, etc. (I have experienced this three or four times). If someone is killed, they may check the surveillance. But it is different in China. The police will also check the surveillance for minor cases to catch the criminals. This is why it is safer in China, especially in big cities. It is said that London is the city with the most cameras, but I have not seen any complaints or protests from Western media.

The surveillance cameras are very unlikely to be tracing every pedestrians, because it is impossible and unnecessary, at least for now. The police will investigate the video clips for evidence when something has happened, or watch in real-time if they are searching for certain people. Well, for sure, they can also be used to track dissidents and social activists. But I believe, as long as you are not someone they are looking for, you will not identified, 'numbered', or your traces be recorded, by the camera system.

Crime rate is super low in China. You can literally leave your cameras and bags on the street and no one takes it. That is because everyone knows the government can track you down with security cameras. Every corner has camera and there are massive face recognition software and data stores deployed. Someone did a test. He showed up random in a city and they were able to track him down in couple hours. Everything he did is back tracked with cameras. If you don't like this society, China is not for you. But if you like the safety of life, China is for you. Whatever floats your boat.

Not to mention, you are walking around the busiest tourist street in ShangHai. 20 yuan per cup is quite a normal price there. Are westerner’s knowledges of China still stuck in 20 years ago? Shanghainese here! Welcome to Shanghai! Not sure if you've figured it out yet, but in China most things can be done, including payment, through either WeChat or Alipay. I was told that it's actually very easy for foreigners to set up an Alipay account and link their credit cards. Maybe you can try that next time. Not many people still use cash here these days. Also, the amount of electric cars isn't as high as you think. I would say about 50% are electric now? You can tell by their number plates. Blue plates mean combustion and green plates mean electric or hybrid. By the way that one occasion you heard a lot of car horns is because you were crossing the road under red light. It's not your fault, as I can see that you were just following other people, but we typically don't do that here. In terms of the streets, Nanjing Road is probably the most touristy place you can find in Shanghai. It's a good destination for a first-timer, but it doesn't represent nowadays Shanghai particularly well. For example, those "big iconic Chinese signs" you mentioned. They were built about 30 years ago when Shanghai had its first boost in economy. We don't really build them anymore, and you will find them in large quantities only on Nanjing Road now. Nanjing Road is also probably the only place in Shanghai where you will find scammers, unfortunately, so do be careful when you are there. Anyway, nice video, and enjoy your trip! (If the trip has already finished, I look forward to you coming again to explore more! Shanghai has a lot to offer!) Cheers!

Many so call "police" in tourist vlogs I watched recently are just securities, like neighborhood watchman, usually in uniforms look similar to law enforcements but they are not. Authentic police are always with Police uniform, and are not so often seem outside of those crowded hotspots. Considering the large population, China actually has a slightly lower than average law enforcement officer per capita (Wikipedia). Also, some cameras at the Bund in the video are used for statistics on people counting. Right at that location in the video, there was a stampede in the last night of 2014, resulted in 36 casualties. Anyway, nice adventure you got! 👍
