I have lived in Northern Minnesota my whole life & have seen lots of black bear, timber wolves, and even moose while hiking or skiing. I agree with the gentlemen about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area: over a million acres & 1100 lakes. No roads. No motorboats. Thank you for showing that Minnesota is more than the Mall of America (which most of us avoid).

Absolutely love the wolf exhibit. They are truly amazing animals. Loved the howling and chartering show you were able to witness. My family comes from Walker and St Cloud, MN. Growing we were warned about possible black bears in the area when picking wild berries. Never saw any though. Growing up around nature is the only way I believe we should all grow up. You learn to respect and understand the circle of life first hand.

The winters here can be brutal which makes me want to move, but I don't think I'll ever fully leave Minnesota. The Minnesota series from Duluth (my hometown) and up along the north shore of Lake Superior made me so very happy. I am so glad you got to experience the nature that I grew up with and love. If you do return in winter, bring some very warm clothes!

You've seen more in Minnesota than a lot of native people have who live here. One event of note happens over Labor Day holiday each year, up in NW Minnesota area. Western Minnesota Steam Thresher's Reunion. Highly recommend spending 2 or 3 days on the grounds watching and partaking of all the exhibits. There's no 1800's era show anywhere in America like it. Also the changing of the autumn season tree colors is fantastic in MN, around late September to middle October.

Marie, I love your channel, and particularly love your Minnesota episodes. You visit all my favorite places, and it's fun to revisit them through your eyes. At the Int'l Wolf Center, did they bring out a deer carcass for the wolves' evening meal? I really enjoy that. (I think it's roadkill - I believe that cops and\or state troopers bring them to the Center for the wolves' delectation. Yum, roadkill!)

Every year in Plymouth, North Carolina they have a black bear festival. I live near Pikeville North Carolina. My late father has seen bear tracks around our house. On occasion I have seen deer in my yard

Usually when we're up at our cabin in northern MN it's always the day you are leaving that has the best weather. A couple of weeks back we were driving our side x side next to a blackberry patch and suddenly 2 cubs and then the sow popped their heads up from the berry patch. It was pretty comical they had that guilty hand in the cookie jar look on their faces for a few seconds before they bolted for the nearby woods.

So glad you had fun in my beautiful state. When my son was in 5th grade,I volunteered to be the nurse for a week at Wolf Ridge which is also in Ely. It is a winter camp where they learn about wolves,and winter life for the natives. Snowshoe walking is so much fun. They brought a wolf over,and also an eagle. The kids learned how to tap a maple tree and make maple syrup. It was so much fun. Thanks for your wonderful comments.

Yes winter in Minnesota is fun with outdoor activities. Danny found some fun summer activities. Can he or some other Minnesotan pull off a winter adventure? There's dog sledding up around Ely if you like that. Snow shoeing in the woods and cross country skiing. Frozen waterfalls and ice climbing some of them. Lake Superior does not freeze over unless it's a really cold winter from the start. People actually surf Lake Superior in the winter when a big storm hits. I live in Duluth and it's normal to see open water during winter 😂

Lol miss Marie I use to live in an area near a mountain. Sometimes the bears would come down looking for food. I lived in the area for about 13 years. In that time I saw a bear close up once. It was huge. That was enough for me lol a good friend of mine lied in the same area. One time he opened his front door to go to work and a bear was right outside his door between him and his car. My friend was not afraid and waited for the bear to slowly walk away into the woods.

While I’ve lived in Minnesota since the fall of 2000, I grew up in the wonderful state of Michigan, affectionately known as “The Great Lakes State.” For reference, Michigan has over 3200 miles of shoreline while Minnesota, a beautiful state in its own right, has 189. And another tidbit of information to put those stats in perspective: If one includes the shoreline around islands, Michigan’s shoreline is just about equal to the entire Atlantic Coast from Maine to Florida. With all of this said, there’s much to see and do in Michigan and I’m hoping you can visit it during your travels in the U.S. Thank you again for sharing your experiences both large and small while in Minnesota and, to a lesser degree, the great state of Wisconsin.

Hearing the wolves made me smile! When I lived up there, I used to track the different wolf packs, with data from the Wolf Center, and then try to camp near them so I could hear them howl at night. I also used to have a dog that was half wolf, and he used to sing along when I practiced trumpet. The wolf's howl, and the loon's call are the two sounds I miss most from Minnesota. You're making me homesick, now I'm going to have to make a trip back home.

Bonjour Marie, even though your last day in MN started off rainy, it looked like it turned out to be a beautiful day. Overall, the weather was good to you. Happy belated birthday to Mom. The bear and wolf centers were very interesting. Black bears rarely attack people. Once while camping with friends, a black bear invaded their campsite, but they only attacked a cooler with food in it. 16:26: It was nice of the bears at the bear center to call ahead and tell one of their friends to greet you on your drive back. 😁 I hope your trip back to France was a good one. I probably already told you this. When I was a kid we would go on vacation in northern Wisconsin. For fun, we would go to the local garbage dump at night to see the black bears. Such fun! I actually traveled with two timber wolves doing educational lectures back in the day. Magnificent creatures. When I was backpacking in the U.P. of Michigan a bear got into my backpack. Totally my fault. All he stole was my peanut butter. I was very lucky. There are occasional bear sightings here in Illinois. We went on a canoe trip in Quetico Provincial Park in Canada in Ontario north of Minnesota. We saw wolf tracks but didn’t see any wolves. Saw lots of moose. I’m so very happy that you had the opportunity to experience this. Minnesota is beautiful.

The winters are very cold but can be very beautiful, even magical looking after a heavy snowfall.... and .... no mosquitoes! 😊 In metro areas the bugs are less because the cities spray to reduce the numbers, but out in the wilderness they can be bad. Bear can be tough to see when you are hopping highways to destinations. Gotta be traveling back roads mornings and evenings. I dont live nearly that far north in Minnesota but we get bears in our yard all the time. And last year a few nice sized wolves.

We're happy you're in love with Minnesota. Danny is right, Minnesota, in winter, can be magical. But be sure you get good warm boots, heavy gloves, and a thick coat, or leave extra room in your suitcase and get the stuff here. I grew up in the Northeast Metro. A couple times we had bears in our yard. Our dogs' barking was enough to get them to mosey off. Black bears don't like noise, and won't fight if they don't have to. Doesn't mean you should give one a hug - it's still a bear. But they avoid confrontation, which is probably why there are more of them than there are of all other species of bear combined.

Marie, I'm glad you got to see the bears and wolves up close and personal on this trip! It's one thing to see them there in a zoo and entirely another to turn the corner on a trail in the middle of the forest and see one walking toward you on the trail. I always talk to them like dogs and figure that they can tell from someone's voice if they are hostile or not. Luckily, I've never had to defend myself from one. I've also been followed by a wolf pack in eastern Washington State and that was a really cool experience because I was hiking along a creek and the wolves stayed on the other side. We made eye contact many times and it was just like they were coming along for the hike wondering what it was we were going to see. They eventually went another direction and I didn't have to defend against them either. I hope you continue to see amazing animals in nature and even more fantastic locations to fan the flames of adventure in you! Take care and keep smiling!

Love your videos. Would be nice to hear some comparisons between places you visit in the U.S. and other parts of the world that you have visited (included your home country) as well as places you visit in the future. I used to travel quite a lot, but my body can't handle it so much anymore (mostly traveling by roadway with only a bit of flying and one cruise). Now my adventures are more limited to those shared by others like you. Not a huge fan of the common big tourist attractions. I much prefer these adventures like you shared here in Minnesota and Wisconsin (my home states - where I was born and raised before re-locating to North Carolina in the mid-1990s). I was hoping you made it to Ely, for those specific places. Last time I was there, they had the largest ever captive black bear, about 900 lbs already on a diet. Some people had originally kept it as a pet, but let it get too fat. I hand fed it carrots. You're also likely to see moose driving around up there.

If you do, another cool experience is staying in a cabin on one of our many lakes. Its cool to hear the loons calling to eachother in the morning and the beautiful sunsets in the evening, as well as cruising around in a boat or pontoon. Thanks again for the great videos!

Marie, when you next come to Minnesota visit Hibbing to see the iron ore mines, Itasca State Park to see the source of the Mississippi river, and Pipestone MN to see where the Native Americans quarried pipestone, out of which they made their ceremonial pipes. Pipestone was traded all over North America by various Native American tribes and was in great demand.

To add to this when doing the Headwaters of the Mississippi River you can do the Lost 40 trail, it's not too far away and it's a short hike threw 40 acres of woods that's never been cut

Underrated, probably true. The northern one-third part is endless forests and endless number of lakes scattered in the forests. The central one-third is mixed prairie, forest and lake country. Very scenic to drive thru (for reference, see Fargo the movie at the cabin) . The southern one-third is open farmland like Iowa, but with scattered lakes. Every state has its unique human and natural attraction, although MN does have a special spell-binding attraction. It is truly underrated. Colorado has the mountains, but MN has the lakes and vast expanses of unending forests, moreso than say Colorado. So its a draw to be honest. Lived in both states, and it is a draw to me.

@@mnstates the culture in CO sucks, though. Born and raised in MN, lived in ND for 10 years, lived in CO for 4, then moved back to MN. The north has the hidden gem that is empathy for your neighbor. That small-town feel is standard throughout. In CO, not a single neighbor ever approached us without us first engaging. At work in CO, people didn't ask about your day/life/family mostly because no one cared to learn about each other. That's the real beauty of living up north here.

For 30 years my family ran a camp. We had a few resident black bears. They never bothered the campers. Just ate blueberries and blackberries and wrecked a dumpster.

A couple friends and I went out into the Wisconsin woods at the end of a fire track (rough cut lanes for forest fire fighting trucks to use if needed) and a short hike and set camp. We ate before going out and were going to eat after we left the next morning, but we had beer with us. Bedtime I decided to sleep by the fire while the others used the tent. Later I woke up from being cold and was about to stoke the fire when I heard a bear outside of camp. Didn't come in but hung out a few minutes. In the morning we went out to scout deer sign for hunting in a few weeks. Came across the bear den. Bear was out so no worries but we decided to go scout a different location.
