MANY parents struggle to maintain discipline in their home. But spare a thought for Jim and Susan Kowalczik whose main charge is a huge 1400lb Kodiak brown bear. The couple look after the 9ft giant at their orphanage where they have dedicated their lives to rescuing and releasing injured animals. They now care for 11 bears, including Kodiak brown bears, Syrian bears and black bears on their 100 acre estate in Otisville, New York. Most were rescued as cubs from breeding programs or nature reserves that closed down.

I’m originally from Middletown NY, close to Otisville. My Dad is a mason that had to do a job for Jim and Susan around 2018. As a single father, he took me and my brother to their plot of land and I was lucky enough to get to hand feed these bears and see how gentle they really are. I was about 10 at the time and now as a 15 year old I can only remember how great of an experience this was.

@@metroplier2670 Its worst actually, when you realize that animals are so much more vulnerable than other humans, the precious life of an animal become more important. And the sentient aspect of animals with their loves, hates, fear and etc., makes you more responsible towards theses guys. A domestic cat/dog/rabbit... dying, ill or suffering, I think its more terrible than a baby human, because the world is adapted to us, its usually no big deal, and they will grow, but animals stay vulnerable from day 1 to the last days.

Bears are pretty intelligent creatures so they can sense and appreciate the deep connection that this couple has. Sure, that danger is always there but it's all about how long you train, how they have been raised, and understanding how the relationship with the animal works. The more dangerous the animal is, the harder you need to work to achieve the relationship and do you're research.

Bears are primarily brawlers, not ambush predators like tigers so they don't get the pounce instinct that big cats do when they see a person's back so bears are much less dangerous overall. The Kodiak bear is beautiful that all of your bears are beautiful. It made me sad when you were at the cemetery for the Bears that had passed away and brought tears to my eyes. Yeah, Kodiaks are the biggest Brown Bear species, and rival Polar Bears as the biggest overall bears. I'm a big fan of Tigers, but when you see the sheer size of that 1400-pound Kodiak, it's laughable to see some ppl say a 600-pound Siberian Tiger would kill full grown Brown Bear. Small adult or cub I can see, but put that 1400-lb beast in with ANY Siberian, and there'd be a dead cat in short time.

LiGht YaGami A Tiger doesn't have the extreme low center of gravity that the Wolverine does, and combined with its quickness and being small enough to get on its back/neck, the Polar Bear couldn't get at it the way it could vs. a very large Tiger. Again, I'm a HUUUGE fan of Tigers, but after looking at this video and the size of that 1400-pound Kodiak, if you're betting money between that Kodiak and a large 600-pound Siberian Tiger in an enclosure and which animal would come out alive? I don't think you'd bet your money on the Tiger. I know I wouldn't.

The key part of this video is that they are passionate but also have a place dedicated to the bears. They aren't taking a bear out of the wild and putting it in their living room, they made this sanctuary where the bears can exist and thrive just in a different way. I really admire these people.

About 3 months ago, my wife and I rescued an Alaskan Malamute named Bear. I saw this title, "Our Big Bear Family" and loved it. I have seen these fine people on utube before and love the fact that they do what they do. These gentle giants are an awesome sight to behold and raising them from cubs helps a little when worrying about them turning on you. They however are still wild animals and should be handled with care and respect. At 1500 pounds that bear could injure you just by playing with you. I believe Jim said that himself. 🐻
