Though, they are definitely differences, but I think in most Christian countries Christmas is celebrated around Dec 24-26. Some of those days are national holidays (depending on the country). You supposed to spend this time with your family. So for these reasons, many of the shops are closed. If their jobs allows, people tend to go on holiday from Dec 24- Jan 1.
