And a photo that my mother found from the very first time I saw a drum set way before that. We have to be so insanely grateful for our parents and their way of documenting what maybe seemed to be not too big of a deal back then - but happened to be some of the most important events of our lives, haha. Thanks for sharing, Kristina.

My first kit was full sized. I got it Christmas of '95 My mom didn't get the whole "drums" thing and wanted to get me the cheapest smallest kit available. My dad thankfully took over because he knew I wanted real full size actual drums. The kit was a Sunlite brand. They used to advertise their "pro" line in Modern Drummer magazine but it never took off. Mine was the lowest level beginner kit. The drums themselves were fine, I never found out what wood they were made of, I guess luan? That seems typical. With foil sticker badges. The heads were cheap single ply. The hardware all broke. And not even from hard playing because I was a light hitter when I started out. The spring in the hi hat broke. The "cam"/ beater holder on the bass drum pedal was not held by anything so it rocked side to side. The footboard was not screwed onto a bottom plate like pro pedals today are. It was held by thin strip of metal on the bottom held by a single cheap wing screw! So it rocked side to side. I got to tell this story to Carmine Appice and he laughed. Worst cheapest pedal ever. The hi hat had footboard was exactly the same. Moved all round and your foot was on it. The cymbals stands were stupid thin, like 50's and 60's stands were. No thick tubing anywhere. The snare stand was lousy too. Same thin metal strips for the snare basket as was on the pedal bottoms. The basket had one tiny screw holding it tight so my snare would almost all out. The snare was still with beads on the shell. Nothing special, six lugs, cheap loose strainer. I had brass starter cymbals. The made noise and that's about it. But I loved having that kit! I later bought a Mapex Pro M kit as my first real kit and sold the Sunlites to deserving friend of an acquaintance. Nice trip down memory lane Kristina!

Lol i still have my first kit from when i was like 8. I took lessons for a few months then i stopped. Then a few years later i got the video game Rockband and i got the drums for it, i played the game for a few years and then i told my mom i wanted to get a real kit again. My mom said go for it, i got a cheap adult kit off Amazon and ive been playing for about over a year. I only learned the basis stuff when i took lessons but im now self teaching myself. I taught myself how to play double bass and blast beats, and the snare that came with my bigger kit broke and i used the snare from the kit i had when i was a kid. And honesty that snare sounded pretty good even though i used a no name tom head as the batter side head.. but that little 10" snare packs a punch!

I think all musicians can remember their first instrument. For me it was a basic rock kit with a pair of cheap hats and single crash / ride. Would've sounded much better had I known how to tune a kit back then... I then moved to a Roland TD-6V electronic kit, which was a package deal from a German music store with cheaper pads than the standard Roland model. It used real drum heads and semicircular cymbals, with no rim triggers, a two-position hi-hat pedal (either fully open or fully closed) and single-zone cymbals. From that I went to a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz with Sabian cymbals which I regret selling, and from that to a Yamaha DTX-750K which was a pretty sizeable step up. I'm now on a Roland TD-30KV which was a stupid decision, I long for another acoustic but the practicality of the electronic stops me getting rid of it. Great video.
