I’m a first year student midwife and seeing a forceps delivery on my first shift was an experience, so i’m glad to hear someone else openly say that it was ‘intense’ to witness . I’ve had a few night shifts and it seems that’s when the spontaneous vaginal births happen.

My first time on the labour ward I also saw a forceps!! Quite the introduction to obstetrics 😅 determined to see an spontaneous vaginal birth on my last 2 weeks of this placement !!

As a former nurse who worked ICU on nights, and now a 2nd year medical student, I definitely wonder what the doctor side of things feels like on night shift.

That’s so interesting you’re doing medicine after doing nursing! What made you switch careers?

@@LydiaMartinMedic as much as I loved taking care of people when they are at their most vulnerable, I wanted to know why I was doing what I was doing. Only the physician has that level of knowledge. Also, I feel like the impact that I can have on the healthcare system here in the USA will be bigger as a physician than as a nurse. There is so much that still needs to be changed. So far, I don’t regret my decision at all. I love being able to learn everything that we learn.

I'm medically exempt from night shifts and on-call shifts, but it's always a good time when I watch your content!

A week of nights is a killer especially the hours between 4-7 unless you’re busy. Depending how you sleep you’re bladder wakes you up every hour during the day and come the end of the week you have night shift bloat as your digestive system is in chaos. I usually had dinner about 8pm with porridge and banana around 2am which kept me going until morning. Keep hydrated… water not coffee.

Thanks for the tips!! Defo agree with the no coffee rule… after one night I can see how that would mess your sleep up even more

I was a nurse, I worked nights hit for years. 1 on 1 off, as my hubby had cancer and a new baby. I look back now, wonder how I did it

It's crazy that you're the one who made dinner before a night shift. I'd be mortified if I was the dude that lives with you.

I'm meant to be on nights the week that the strikes are happening so no idea if I'll actually be in for them or not, but my next placement after that is obs and gynae and I'm 99.9% sure we have to do at least one night! Hopefully it'll be as successful as yours was 🤞 Also, I was a forceps baby born on a night shift, and apparently I kept freaking everyone out because my heart rate was all over the place😅 (lol sorry mum)

Placement is always a bit hit & miss with strikes i never know what kind of day it will be 😫 but yeah defo jump on the chance to do a night on Obs&Gynae!! Ahhh you were a troublemaker like me (also a forceps delivery - my mum loves to tell me what an ordeal it was!) x

An an American it's so funny to listen to these - American doctors have zero chill - at least two of those three births would have been c-sections here.
