My FIRST EVER REACTION to NIGHTWISH 'Storytime' | Literally SPEECHLESS!

Hello Daniel Goland [DG Reacts] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I discovered Nightwish almost two years ago...and despite being a hard rock/heavy metal enthusiast since the 1960's... I had never even heard of Nightwish here in Texas! Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish! The concert that this song is part of is Wacken 2013 and will go down in history as one of the the most epic shows that not only Nightwish performed, but anyone has ever performed. You simply cannot go wrong with any of the songs from this show, and what is even more amazing is that Floor was not even confirmed as a full time member of the band at this point, she had only been with them for around 10 months after filling in for their previous (second) vocalist who was ill on the US leg of the world tour. You'll probably hear reference to a video "learn the set list in 48 hours" and she did indeed do that whilst travelling from Europe to the US. Enjoy jumping down the rabbit hole, its very, very deep!!!

In a recent video she mentioned working out, but in others she has said that the work around the place keeps her in shape, so I guess it depends on the moment. There is an old ReVamp video floating about YT where she is shown working out wth the band. Apparently she used to power lift with Sander back in the After Forever days. HaHa. When you mentioned Floor Jansen reminds you of someone, I thought you were going to mention another singer, not Chyna. That's funny. Actually, Floor at 6'+ is 2" taller than Chyna. If you're in the USA then you usually won't hear them because their songs are too long. Radio stations like to crank out the 3-3.5 minute songs. Tuomas keyboards/founder/composer doesn't write short songs. He writes them until he is satisfied that the song is finished. Every song you hear from Nightwish and Floor is excellent. Your music volume could be a little higher. 😀🤘

I second this. Normally I despise live music but with Nightwish I don’t want to hear any studio versions. The only exception I will make is storytime performed by annettet in the I guess official video. Floor is my absolute favorite but I’m giving props to Annette as well. OK I guess how’s the heart studio version is good as well. OK what am I saying I’m going off topic, but there’s just no bad Nightwish version.. Lol.

Floor Jansen…the singer…can sing (literally) anything. You’ll find that they are very versatile, and no two of their songs really sound the same. Gabriel will give you a list…use it as a roadmap, and it will propel you down the rabbit hole. Be prepared to be amazed all over again every time you hear another song. I’ve been a Nightwish fan since the old days when Tarja was the singer, and then Anette. At the same time, I was a big fan of Floor’s singing while she was with her first band After Forever. When she joined Nightwish in 2012/13, it was truly a match made in heaven. They’ve always been good, but she is the perfect vocalist for this band.

I was in the same boat as you, DG. Nightwish is a band I've known about for ages, but have never actually listened to them. Well, I have now and WOW! Musicianship and vocal athletics aside, I was really drawn to the lyrics. "Storytime" was an apt description for the song name, but I also love the idea of Neverland/Peter Pan, so may have been biased. Hi Daniel, Gabriel Bardac has already provided you with a ton of references, I would only give you a few extra hints: Storytime is a relatively "normal" song for Nightwish standards. Two other very good (and very different! ) ones like this are Song of Myself and Romanticide, and if you want to get aquainted with the (even) more EPIC side of Nightwish (and Floor Jansen, the singer), I would definitely advise Ghost Love Score (!!). It received a boost with her participation in 2020 "Beste Zangers" show in the Netherlands - singing in almost every style and finishing with a stellar duet doing "Phantom of the Opera" (you GOTTA watch that one! - look up Floor Jansen and Henk Poort). That move won over even the more pop-minded home audience for this world-caliber singer.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on her. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16.
