The part where you talk about being honest about your qualification is super important and something all new developers should think about when having interviews for jobs or even in their application. Im in the beginning of my career and have during this past year been to several interviews, and during this time ive learnt that it is very important to be honest about you being new to this and what you know or do not know, and the people you are applying to do appreciate the honesty alot, and in the end there will be that one company that actually wants to give you a chance and kinda wants to invest in you which then leads you to be able to work at the same time as you still learn! :).

Oh Kalle, that’s so mature and so honest to say that you feel under qualified and I know that feeling, it’s terrible. 4 years ago I joint a new startup too, and I was their first ever engineer on their previous startup. But here they were on it for 3 years already and I was tasked to implemented an architecture that already had product choices made that didn’t work. And I went to their CIO and said: “Vincent I don’t feel like I can make a difference I’m stuck in architectural choices and I think I may be the wrong guy. So I would hand in my contract and not bill these first two weeks.” And he was like: “Hell no! I won’t accept your resignation, Walter (the director) has praised you to the skies. You will sit with the architect and agree to remove these product choices and you will find solutions that work within the architecture. Architects shouldn’t make product choices!” But at least I knew I was delivering to the standard that they were paying. Honesty is best.

I enjoy your channel. You're a good content provider and I'm glad that you chose your health over the startup. You could have worked at night, synced your time with that of the operation, but you have too much potential than to get burnt out on a startup. Especially, without an equity postiion. Generally speaking, startups can be lucrative (or, not) if you're willing to do what it takes, but it's probably best to know what one's work/life/wealth goals are; remaining careful to be cognizant of adjustments. Kalle, you touched on learning the "Domain knowledge" of the business. Learning it's way of doing things, it's operations, it's profitability, it's politics, etc., AND coding can be daunting initially. Smart businesses understand this...to a degree.

I don't come from Java background BUT I already have 1 year of JavaScript which isn't strongly typed BUT I have strong fundamental skills in JavaScript, and I did a bit of React Native for mobile. I and trying to get an idea if Dart and flutter is hard to learn in comparison to JavaScript or even something like Java? With Dart do you find yourself writing a lot of code like Java? Or is it more like Kotlin where it is strongly typed but more functional and not OOP? I am wondering if it is worth my time or not? Thanks, Hallden I appreciate your videos.

You've had some - to me - strange expectation. When you hire a freelancer, you hire an expert to do something your employees can't or will spend a long time on. You as a freelancer shouldn't expect learning (don't worry, you'll have it) as you should be doing stuff you already know, albeit in a new setting. Yes, you'll be thrown in head first and will be expected to handle it. Usually some introduction to an existing codebase must be given, but if not, you'll have to figure it out yourself. That is the freelance way, have no expectations, do the job, that's why you get the higher hourly rate.
@BillClinton2284 жыл бұрын
Where I'm from freelancers are expected to get paid a lower rate than a full time employee. The reasoning behind that is, you are a one man show and therefore should be cheaper... otherwise we might as well spend our money on a dev studio company. I was a freelancer for 4 years and could never make ends meet. I'm earning 3 times as much working for a boss... yes, working for yourself is fantastic but theres alot of business stuff you have to deal with that has nothing to do with being a developer. Taxes, accounting, sales, networking, support, contracts, price negotiations etc etc etc... just being a good developer doesnt mean you will be a good freelancer... in fact if you have sales experience and little coding experience you will do better than someone that just focuses on coding.
@Ondal14 жыл бұрын
@@BillClinton228 I'm surprised, didn't know that was the way in any place. I'm from Denmark, were it is like I describe, were are you from? Here - in estimate - you make twice as much as a freelancer just doing code, if you happen to have some specialist skills sought after by companies, essentially the sky's the limit. It's within all the new modern stuff like ML and fintech, but also if you happen to know banking systems and is heavy on the COBOL - yes, that's a thing, as pretty much no young people will touch that with a 10 foot pole. As for the side jobs of being a freelancer, again, in my part of the world, it's not really hard. Consultancy companies come to me saying they have a job - mostly, or you can sign up with them, I give them my price, they add some amount - sometimes undisclosed to me, and sell me to their customer. Taxes (insanely high here) the accountant handle once a year, while I do the simple stuff for a few (agonizing!) hours every 3-6 months. Granted, I'd make more just selling myself, but as you're aware that's a separate job. Essentially I can focus on what I'm good at for 99.9% of the time, making customers happy with what I do for them.
