When you hauling for large projects like road building you calculate weight because the heavier the more fuel you use and you dont want to overload When you do smaller progects you measure the thickness and the square footage of the area you going to cover with that material and that is all you buy.

I was really surprised that you've never had to deal with material in cubic yards before. Although most companies have it all computed over to tons for the trucking aspect of it but on the construction side of it it's measured in cubic yards, there's not many but there's still a few smaller gravel pits around here that don't have scales so they still sell it by the cubic yard which I kinda prefer because it's cheaper that way. It really depends on the product and moisture content on the conversion from cubic yard to tons but generally ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, here pit run is around 1.4 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

Lenz is in my neck of the woods. Their primary business is the residential customer which is why they have you order in yds instead of tons. It's annoying sometimes. I rarely go there though. I love their new scale house, makes it so easy. We have two 1 ton dump trucks in our dept that we use for small stuff and they don't have CB's in them so that scale house makes it real easy. We haul out of Belleville pit or Conway pit mostly.

When converting tons to yards.....I generally multiply 1.2 times #yards to convert it to tons....not perfect but close enough. And it only works with gravel....not stone. My experience also has been when you deliver a load to a homeowner....they have no idea how much a yard(or ton) of material is anyway....so don't be too concerned about being exact.

@@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver Get this, after my mixer career I drove for a broker that had its own fleet, and owner operations. Now this is in Southern California, the last to do anything like other states. So we had transfer rigs and buster dumps and the buster was like a mixer with the drop down axel in the rear, with an aluminum box!!! What a stupid combination, they claimed if you were to off camber and you were able to raise the box, the aluminum box hinge point was supposed to brake off instead of the truck going over with the box. So this is a simple case, of you better know your truck!!! We can all get in trouble from time to time, but that is usually the case of not sizing the situation up first! Amen!!! @@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver How many tons of that rock would it take to fill a 15 foot by 100 foot driveway at 4" deep? As a pro, my tape measure is not marked in pounds and tons. We order concrete by the yard as well and we need a certain volume to fill forms. The 5.5 yard bucket on the 349F excavator we used on the job before last moved dirt quite fast. It took 3 scoops or so to fill the super 10's, depending on the material. The wet, black, heavy, stuff on the bottom of the pile (dredge material out of San Diego waters) put some trucks over weight. Buckets are listed by yards. Unfortunately, the scale option was not setup on that machine. We were paid by the ton for hauling the material out and needed to get max weight into the trucks. It depends on the material and what you are doing with it. If you care about volume, you need yards, or if you deal with a very light material (think shipping bulky freight such as insulation) you will be more concerned with the volume you can haul instead of tonnage. Often times tonnage makes sense, but not always. Math is easy to use, if you know the conversion and the material is consistent.

In some countries, materials are bought in YARDS because there are NO SCALES in the quarry. It was strange to me hearing that you buy gravel by the tons. Every job you get is WORK, so none is too small. It will, help to build your business.

@@DauminiqueTheDumpTruckDriver Add me to the list of those that drive with awareness, logic and situation around stop signs rather then written law. Oh I am sure Mr Police man won't see it that way though LOL. Icy intersections in the middle of rural no where and an up slope at the stop sign is a classic example of not being able to start out from a dead stop on glare ice etc yet can see for a mile in either direction and not a vehicle in sight.

One yard of gravel is around 2000 lb if I'm not mistaken. At time 4:20 why are the dash lights flickering ? Oh, then the lights stopped , I say you have a bad ground for the lights. ( my two cents)

Oh my Word Dauminique. Can you imagine this Yard Story in a modern metric world. With all my Maths (and I am good at it) this took me aback that companies still get along with it. I'm still waiting when you guys will get into the kilometre and litre thing instead of miles and gallons. Oh and also the inches versus millimetres. I'm lost when someone talk about miles, inches and gallons. Love my metric world. 🇿🇦🇿🇦

All of their light duty are metric. Bolts, nuts, thread pitch and engine displacement so they are getting broken in to it. Weight, speed and greater lengths will take a long time- if ever. Canada has been officially metric for about 50 years and even 10 year olds still know pounds, ounces and miles/hr. Part of it is our roads surveyed over 100 years ago are a mile apart in both USA and Canada. Part is that a gram is too small and a kilogram is too big. Same with millimetre and kilometre. Ton and Tonne are okay. Celsius temperatures are much more logical.

No Thanks !!! We will stick to ounce, lbs. and ton / pint, quart, gallon / inch, feet, and yard and mile stuff , us smart hillbillies . It has worked for 100's or maybe even a few thousand years, LOL, if it ain't broke don't try fixing it .

I’ve worked for landscaping company’s or dirt excavation companies that sold pulverized black dirt . I’ve done lots and lots of home deliveries. Plus , I’ve drove for paving companies and we would do home drive ways. I can put a paver box inside the garage , out side the garage , I could care less. I backed six wheelers into every conceivable situation you can imagine. Home deliveries I would get out and look at the situation. Then I would tell them if they wanted me to dump it somewhere sketchy “ I’ll put it there but I’m not responsible” or I’d tell them simply “ I can’t do it, I’ll drop it on your approach “ Or on the street or the parkway. I’ve worked for a entire season working with machines on new construction sites, backing over ramps made out of dirt on to of green concrete , dumping on top of a big pile, dumping between houses , backing up between two houses , loaded so much that dirt is falling over the sideboards with the operator sitting on the machine going “ come on fu__ker , your fine. I’d do that in the late fall when the dirt was all mud and your hanging your head out the window to see if your going to hit your mirror on the house because the truck is so heavy it’s starting to sink and tilt to one side. I’d do that day in and day out. Never a mishap. But ya, I know about home deliveries, as the old saying goes” been there and done that “ 😎

homeowners always want yards they dont understand tons my truck does 23.5 tons so i just tell them its 20 yards most have no clue you piad by the ton so charge by the ton or just give them a delivered price per load a yard price would be all over the place depending on moisture dont stress over details like that

Ok good job, boy if you haven’t looked , the new federal truck laws are crazy, i have my license from 1989 and I’m even having problems renewing my clas1toclass A license, on your next renewal, don’t be surprised if they say you did not bring enough required material to renew your license, 1 birth certificate, and two articles of mail with the same full name on them as your full name on your license, the new truck drivers, can’t just go in and take test federally any more , it a whole new law all states are requiring and new registered federally approved truck driving school it’s five to $6000 and like six months long , when I was in the DMV I heard a ton of people got turn around and sent out the door , they are not even allowed to give Extensions for any drivers if they don’t have the correct documentation, all federal (all drivers in The Whole country) the new none grandfathering any more rules took over on February 7 2022, When I was in the DMV twice I said maybe I could drop down to class C , they said if I do , then when I come back after getting my birth certificate, they said I would have to go through a 5 to 6 ,000 .00 dallor truck drivers school, and I had nothing wrong with my license from 1989 , so this Is crazy new laws , I love the new laws , But sorry to say , the foreign people that can’t and don’t have the required USA birth certificate, are just going to be driving with out a license and insurance, its going make us American drivers born here need to have really real good insurance on our trucks, and cars , The ones that don’t qualify for license because they weren’t born or can’t show here with the birth certificate from here will just keep right on driving anyway, they could of done a little bit different thing with this new law, all class A and B and commercial C have til the 28 on February it’s a blanket notice on the whole USA 🇺🇸 to get all required materials, birth certificate and medical and articles of mail two of them with your full name m I taking my house tax bill and one other with my middle initial I hope it works , I been twice , and they would not except nothing but what the new law requires, so get ready Dauminique, on your next renal you we’ll need said documentation, lol thanks BigAl California.
