“Not sure if that’s acceptable”! It’s your workshop and your knife mate, you make it the way you see fit! I think it looks aces.
@PaskMakes6 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Alex! I was just wondering if it was the done thing just gluing a piece in or whether everything on the scales should have a pin through it. I'm sure it will be fine though! :)
@alexnosheds6 жыл бұрын
Pask Makes I think the physics of this will be pretty similar, although knife-making-wise I say that from my armchair. And if worst comes to worst and a piece should fall off, you definitely have the skills to epoxy it back on! :-) BTW I recently was wondering about that quick epoxy, are all the brands the same in their adhesion? I stuck a ukulele bridge back onto the body that had come off and the epoxy joint failed a few days later under string tension. I wonder was it because it was a cheapo 5min epoxy (no name brand)? In any case your knife is going to be fine I’m sure- there’s no flex to be expected (unlike the string tension on thin plywood of a uke body) so I’m sure it’ll be fine for years to come.

@@PaskMakes you pin the 2 sides through the tang to stabilize the whole mess...if you get fancy, you hammer the pins like a true rivet..but then you need material to remove to get the finish back....in this age of really good adhesives the pins are fine without hammering to deform. How the scale is built up really shouldn't make a difference with respect to the pins. ."shouldn't "...

I did paint work for a living for a time. Mostly motorcycles. I learned the mark of a good painter is not how rarely he/she makes mistakes, but how well those mistakes are fixed. I found your channel yesterday and have been watching it a lot. I see when you mess up, you are quite good at not only fixing it, you often make the project look better than it would have had you not messed up. So I say KEEP making those mistakes and KEEP making things better!

Great! From a dirty chunk of metal to a gleaming ergonomic tool of beauty, you have made an heirloom piece. I especially like the way you address and accept your little oversights and you let us see how you solve your challenges. The dark wood bits look intentional! Love your videos. When I come back in my next life, I want to be just like you!
@rpc7174 жыл бұрын
Beautiful work! You should be very proud of that. Just a hint - before doing the final glue up of the handle scales, completely finish contouring the end of the scales by the blade (where the fortuitous oversight was made). That way you don't risk damaging the blade by shaping the scales after they're permanently glued.
@thermmaloverload6 жыл бұрын
Beautiful work Neil, the fancy vise/holder to hold and project the blade while shaping the handle took it to the next level. your video is just the right length, well narrated and best of all, shows how you adapt to challenges and mistakes. Neils workmanship is superb and this video was the first one I chose to watch today.

VERY NICE knife! I've never made one from a kit. Right now, I'm working on a knife for myself made from a lawn mower blade! It's coming along nocely and I tried to sharpen it just to see if I got the heat treat and temper right. THAT THING SHAVE LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS! WOW! I have added a quarter inch thick brass guard and the scales are Acacia Willow. My eldest daughter who died in a car wreck in 1996 was named Acacia so, I thought the scales made from that wood would be good. It's a modified Bowie style blade with a 9 inch length plus the handle! I peened the whole blade to give it a more hand made look and it is just what I wanted! The next knife will be a hefty Kukuri made from a 5/16" leaf spring! Best wishes! Keep up the good work!

It is quite clear from all your videos till date that you work with a very limited set of tools and equipment. But u make up for it in ingenuity and cleverness. Just looking at some of the jigs and fixtures you make for what you actually make is enough to show that u are indeed an excellent example for the old adage " necessity is the mother ( in your case, the father ) of invention ".
