I'm a Brit who is married to a Mexican. They definitely employ, let's say politely, "alternative driving techniques" in Mexico compared with the UK. Less politely, I tell my wife that she should sell tickets for the passenger seats when she goes out driving - it's a roller coaster combination of speed, twists and turns and abject terror.

Swimming lessons once a week for a winter or two could get you to a level where you can swim. You do not look to tense or scared to get to a level where you can swim in the sea. I enjoy to go swimming over stone reefs. There are often a few fish to look at.
