Probably after a few more weeks here you will be able to make the diffrence between gypsies and romanians. So this is how it came to this point. In 2007 when Romania entered European Union (EU) and the borders opened partially and it became easier to travel (go to other EU countries only with your ID, not passport) the gypsies were the first ones that rushed over the borders and did illegal stuff like they were also doing here. Until then, those people did’t have much contact with romanias so the most of them assumed the gypsies were the romanians. This is how we got our image dusted and to this day we are still trying to clean it. PS welcome to Brasov! In the next comment I will leave a few more tips for this city.

@@therealwan Hi Juwan, really nice video again, I'm glad you continue to enjoy yourself here. A second vote for the papanasi here. I just wanted to make a comment regarding the language: You'd be surprised how useful it is to learn Romanian. Not even I realized this until I talked to foreigners who are passionate learners: Romania is uniquely places at the crossroads of the old Roman empire (and their Latin language which makes the most of the Romanian vocabulary) and the Slavic countries (and their languages, which make the second biggest chunk of the Romanian vocabulary). Learning Romanian means you'll automatically be able to understand from French, some Italian, some Spanish, some Portuguese and even some Ukrainian as I found out recently while talking to some refugees. I'd say it's totally worth giving it a go, the investment will pay off!

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying Romania. some quick advice on how to navigate our culture and ppl: - there are some people that beg for money directly or send children to beg(professionally). Please don't give them money If they ask for food, then yes, you probably are in contact with a person in need for real. - we don't mince words. If you think some romanian is being rude, it's not intentional, we just speak our minds at all times - if you want great food, don't go by restaurant reviews. make a friend that is local and just ask them, they are most certainly going to be happy to get you to the best places they know of - Romania has plenty racists, don't you worry about that part (lol). But the level of racism is nothing like other countries. There is maybe some fear here and there (the unknown), but no hate. (I have to say, some countries really are in the hate part of that spectrum ... sheesh) - as far as safety is concerned, if there are lights on the street at night you are 100% safe. if there are no lights on the street at night you are 99.997% safe in most large cities - if you have the desire to travel the country you can basically get a train to every corner (sometimes not the most modern ones, or fast)

Its strange how it takes a foreigner to remind me that I should appreciate my home country. Thanks Juwan. The food has gotten more expensive since Russia and Ukraine are at war, and the inflation that it caused, at least for us locals, is affordable compared to other EU countries. A tip when eating at restaurants is to go to those that you see already have lots of people at their tables; that's when you know the food is fresh. In Brasov, there's a great spot called Cupt'Or. Every time I ate there I was very satisfied and their portion sizes were also BIG Concerning safety. Things used to be wild in the '90s and early 2000s, but the police cracked down on street crime HARD and it actually paid off. We still have crime and organized crime, but it's more discreet. You only get into trouble if you really go looking for it.

have a nice time in romania. you should go see Peles castle in Sinaia, just under 1 hour travell by train. but only if you are an early riser as it gets very crowded after 10 am. on seccond thoughts, even if you don't make it into the castle, the castle gardens and the whole town are lovely. if you have not been there already, go to Poiana Brasov, 10 km up in the montain from Brasov- a nice ski resort but also worth visiting in any other season. there are several pretty good restaurants as well . if you have time for longer trips, Sighisoara town is only in one hour and a half distance form Brasov, it is a charing medieval town part of UNESCO herritage. stay safe!

I agree with the smoking. It's the most disgusting habit, and more dangerous for the people around the smoker. Fortunately, there will be a stricter legislation pretty soon. Regarding the traditional food -keep in mind that Romanian cuisine is more like the comfort food . Slow cooking, really good, healthy in moderate quantities, especially for an athlete. You will not be able to eat 'sarmale' and 'mici' every single day (although you will want to). Traditionally, the Romanians have religious fasting (mostly older generation) - they practically turn vegetarian 2-3 days a week and for longer period of time before Easter and Christmas. That helps with the diet. So you'll have vegetarian/vegan options , too: try the 'zacusca' - it's a vegetables spread. Enjoy your stay! P.S. Maybe you'll reconsider driving, if you rent a car you will be able to visit more, that's plenty to see around Brasov.

Hi Juwan! I highly recommend the restaurant "Sergiana", it's in the center of the city and they also have another location that it's outside the city (Stâna Sergiana). The one in the city is underground and their food is amazing (my favorite dishes are "Tocăniță Ardelenească" and "Sarmale", but everything there is tasty and for sure worth trying. Hope you and your wife will have the time to try their food! ☺️

Traditional appetizers: roasted eggplant spread (salată de vinete), roasted peppers/vegetable spread (zacuscă), fish roe spread (icre), bean hummus (fasole bătută), roasted red peppers (ardei copți), breaded beef brain (creier pane), breaded yellow cheese (cașcaval pane). Soups - too many to list but the most exotic would be beef tripe soup (ciorbă de burtă) and soup thickened with cream Rădăuți-style (ciorbă rădăuțeană), matzo ball soup (supă cu găluște). Side dishes to try include polenta (mămăligă), in the spring stinging nettle greens (urzici), shaved apple and celery salad (salată de țelină cu măr) and sauces like the traditional garlic sauce (mujdei). Main dishes include grilled pork neck (ceafă de porc) which is much more tender than American pork chops, stuffed cabbage leaves or stuffed grape leaves (sarmale), both can be with pork or vegetarian with rice, marinated meatballs (chifteluțe marinate), poultry with quinces which are a local fruit (mâncare de gutui), celery dish (mâncare de țelină), in the fall try sheep pastrami, and Romanian style kebab (mici). For dessert the crepes are good and varied (clătite), various cakes are great, juicy syruppy dough dessert (savarine), chocolate potatoes, named so because of their shape (cartofi de ciocolată), traditional sweetbread (cozonac), plum dumplings (găluște cu prune), and only in the context of religious ceremonies honoring the dead, boiled wheat dessert (colivă). For drinks, other than the alcoholic ones, in the fall you must try young wine or must, which is fermented grape juice before it become wine (must), elderberry infused drink (socată) but try it fresh, not bottled, or rose petal lemonade (limonadă cu petale de trandafir). For alcoholic drinks I'd recommend, other than the usual suspects, the various "ades" (think Gator"ade" in English) made from various fruits, they are liqueurs with less alcohol than brandy (țuică) and the like: sour cherry ade (vișinată), blueverry ade (afinată), fig ade (smochinată), quince ade (gutuiată), sweet cherry ade (cireșată), etc. Of course if you go to the delta or the Black Sea coast, you have to try all the local river fish or the seafood, respectively. My favorite sea fish is the turbot (calcan) which is flat and fatty. But there will be a huge variety of options. In your mountain area go to a trout nursery for food (păstrăvărie), there is a really good one between Brașov and Sighișoara which serves trout soups, main dishes, etc which are delicious- just be careful with the bones! I hope you enjoy the country's hospitality and have nothing but positive interactions with the people.

What you mentioned about cutting people off when in the central lane of the roundabout and wanting to take a right is illegal, the same rules apply as when you are driving straight, so in order to change lane you need wait for it to be clear. So those doing it have little to no respect for laws or other people.

There are rules for changing the direction of travel, the traffic lane of the car. You signal and drivers generally let you change lanes if you want to change direction. Also, many drivers who are locals know the areas where there are side streets and expect it and are careful. Drivers know this but for someone who doesn't drive it seems chaotic.

Our staple foods known across the world are mici with mustard and sarmale with sour cream. But we have a lot more than that. The variety of traditional foods we have is actually quite insane and varies depending on which region of Romania you are. We have a lot of traditional meat or fish dishes served with mamaliga(polenta) and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. We mostly serve our traditional foods during Holidays like Easter, Christmas. More often you will see traditional foods being served in villages than in cities and most of the times a Romanian grandma can make cabbage rolls "sarmale" and cheese pie "poale-n brau" better than any restaurant.

Tips: (1) eat "mici" (pronounced as "Mitch") with bread and regular mustard, not honey mustard; (2) ask if the "sarmale" are made of pickled cabbage (these are the best); (3) try the sarmale first without sour cream, then you can decide how you like them better; don't forget the bread.

Don't feel bad for the parents. They are abusing their children and using them for money. DON'T support child labor and child abuse. Don't give them money or food. If you don't give they won't ask. If you give them they'll not be thankful they'll consider you dumb and a fool, which would be factually true. Honest people don't do this, they go and work and kids go to school not in the street.

If you think smoking is bad nowdays, you should had seen it like 5 years ago before it was banned to smoke indoor. A lot of people gave up on smoking then but there are still a lot. Slowly it's getting changed but it's hard to change mentalities overnight. Do not give gipsy beggers money, it's rarely that they need that in order to eat and more so it's their business to make money. Some may even be richer than you and you will never know it. Try sarmale with mamaliga, mici, shaorma. You also can try for bread spread :salata de vinete, zacusca. For desert papanasi, langosi, kurtosh. Not all romanian but you will find them anywhere. As romanian and living 18 years under the communism era, i have to say that Romania was always safe. You don't see police much comparing with USA, because people are peaceful. You can see police during protests or strikes, but most of the times these takes place in Bucharest, in front of Government building.Regarding Brasov,is even more peaceful, being a very touristic city.Try to visit Maramures,Transfagarasan and Bucovina and discover village life.Prince Charles of UK is staying in Romania 3 months per year, and he has a house in Viscri village, opened for tourists when he is not arround.Try to pay a visit,is only about 80 km from Brasov, and you will discover real village romanian life. Moreover try traditional food, like famous sarmale, mici and kurtos-colacs. We are a country of pretzels and bread, and we like also cheese.

Just don't give money to random people you meet that are poor, offer them food or groceries, that's the safest way. Because if you give them money and all, they will go and buy something else other than food, because all people have addictions, so with the money you give them, they will try to use them for addictions which is bad. So offer food instead, or water/juices. If you want to, if not thats fine. It is your own choice. I hope you have a great time here, i appreciate your work, you're doing great, God bless you. 🙂

Traditional Romanian food: Sarmale cu mamaliga (cabbage rolls with polenta) - polenta is like bread but from corn... don't taste it by itself... it's meant to be eaten with the main dish Mici (like a grilled sausage but without the skin - you eat it with mustard and bread) Ciorba de costita afumata (soup from smoked pork ribs) Ciorba de fasole (bean soup) Ciorba de burta (tripe soup - cow stomach) Carne de la garnita (smoked pork steak preserved in pork fat over the winter - delicious!) Papanasi (desert - it's like a donut with sour cheese cream and blueberry jam)

romanian language is in my view the easiest language to learn for westerners that know english or know a romance language from all of the former comunist countries , so if you want to experience eastern europe on easy mode, romania is the best choice, not to mention romanians are more liberal in the core value sense and less populist than theyr former warsaw pact countries

I wish you all the best! So glad you like it here & i wish for you good health and don' t believe that romanians are gipsys or they steel , in all countrys are bad ppl & gipsies are not romanians. They decent from indians and they are a migrant tribe they came here because of Ceaușescu from Russia because he wanted cheap labor & they stayed here. Actually Romania was named the small Paris years ago & is the first country in europe to have street lights( Timișoara was the first city in europe with street lights) . Thank you for your visit & please don' t believe this nonsens that every one steel in romania , no, like every country we have also bad ppl but not all romanians are bad ❤. Yes we smoke but this is Europe 😊Yes don' t give money to the beggers, they are those gipsies that steel, and it' s just an act, actually they have big houses& if they are not gipsies they are put by them to steel😢we have not guns every where & just few & very hard to have a permit for a gun😊 Go to Brașov, Timișoara, Black Sea, Oradea , Sighișoara etc

1. Gypsys have been living here and various parts of Europe for centuries. They have nothing to do with Ceausescu. 2. Bucharest was called Paris of the East, not the whole country. 3. Timisoara was the first European city that had electric street lights, but it wasn't part of Romania in that time, so Romania was not the first country with electric street lights.

Hi. about the kids that are asking for money. don't give them money. they will use it on cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs. they'll almost never take food cause they don't want it. now, if you see some poor old people in fornt of a Gigi or Luca, they'll probably want some food and thank you for it. So, if you see a kid begging, it's just a gypsy. don't give them anything and don't feel bad about it. I'm not saying it with any hatred towards them, it's just a "scam" and everybody in Romania knows about it.

Hello friend, from what I see you are active in a team from Brasov. Be a little careful in terms of safety... however, I'm not referring to people, they are OK. But especially in the evening if you go out for a walk, keep in mind that there are bears in the area. Basically, you are in the country with the largest population of bears in Europe. And occasionally one ends up wandering through the urban areas

Food recommendations that I haven't seen is hungarian foods. We have a lot of ethnic Hungarians here in Romania, most of them in transylvania. I recommend gulash (some kind of beef stew) and kurtos kalacs/curots colac (a kind of pastry desert that looks like a hollow tube sprinkled with all kinds of toppings like cinnamon or walnuts, one of my favorite deserts :)), you can usually find it at stands on the street). The langos that you mentioned is a hungarian dish.

Careful in Romania as smoking is everywhere. Science: "Abstract: In Romania lung cancer represents the second most common cancer after breast cancer, for both sexes, and is the leading cause of death among patients with cancer. Between 2011 and 2019 the incidence of cancer had a growing trend for both Romania and Constanta County. Unfortunately, the forecast regarding the incidence of cancer in Romania shows a trend of continuous rise of new cancer cases until 332.7%000 inhabitants by 2025. In these conditions we wanted to analyze some aspects of lung cancer situation in Constanta County. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp2kinymbcmjiLM

The level of safety is exactly like in Italy and Spain, if you pay just normal attention to your belongings you’ll be fine❤ Romanian reputation in Europe has been a little spoiled by. all people identifying all those begging gypsies with Romanian people, also a lot of Romanian people immigrated to Italy to find a better life and accepted very humble jobs which nobody wanted, but this was perceived as “they come there to steal our job” ( happened the same with Albanians in the ‘90) and it is hard to get rid of this fame. But this is too bad because Romania is really Europe hidden gem 💎

Yeah, try not to give money to beggars. Over here, begging is pretty much a sort of organized crime, where parents, usually part of a clan and of a certain ethnicity, send their kids to beg, but they're not really poor, it's just a way to get some extra income, and also whatever money you give to some disabled person or an old person, someone who looks genuinely poor, just ends up in some mobster's pocket because they're pimping out the beggars and pretty much own them.
