I will also add that if you are taking distant images of birds and know you will crop the images anyhow, put the camera in crop mode, and the auto focus will work better on the birds.

That’s a great tip Ted. I will give that a try.

That is a myth. Crop mode does nothing except reduce the file size. Crop sensor does improve reach compared to full frame, crop mode does not. Shoot in the native 3X2 format and keep all those pixels to crop in editing!

@@RetrieverTrainingAlone I didn't say it improves reach, but that the autofocus will work better on a distant subject. Cheers, Ted 😎

@@tedinohio3981 That makes no sense as your throwing away pixels. Better to customize autofocus options for need instead of throwing away pixels.

@RetrieverTrainingAlone I am considering this as a useful option for small birds or animals, when I am using eye focus. I already plan to heavily crop, so would not use the pixels I throw away. I would not use crop mode for landscape, for example. Cheers, Ted 😎

I like this lens and have got good results with it. I agree you have lost some "reach," but you can also get an option to get more of the environment by not being at 600 all the time; that is at 250mm for example. Also, it works well at close range, something the rf 600 f/11 does not- it's an "almost-macro". On the rare occasions when I need more reach I have the 1.4 converter. It's a good option, but nearly as expensive as the price of the rf 100-400! It did stop me from getting the even more expensive rf100-500. Also, the 100-400 is much lighter and easy to carry, for me. I agree. I need to use it more but I like having the ability to zoom. Thanks for the comment Ted.

I just started at of the blue. Getting the camera, lens and the rest of those things needed to make it work and then I plan to jump right out there. I was surprised you sold the 600. Would like to know why. I got four lenses and put some others to maybe by later. One of the lenses I got was the 400 like you on sale. I really wanted the 100-500 5.6-8 maybe?, but I will never be able to afford it. I mostly want to do this to get out in the woods and have some fun. It looked like you were having fun. I am going to try to be creative and get those great shots. I figure on wearing my camp and try crawling through mud and swap until I am right on the bird. Then I’ll have that good photo with the smooth background and sharp bird. I think it is possible anyway. Great video😊

Thanks for the comment. I sold the RF600 to help fund the 100-400. I find that the F11 of the RF600 didn’t work well for my type of shooting. I figured I would try the 100-400 to see if it fit my style better. In the long run if I am going to focus more on wildlife photography I will need to spend the big dollars and get a 600mm F4. I hope you are able to capture the images you are looking for. Have fun.

Yah, images kind of soft. I saw better results from other testers.

Bad photography technique looks like the cause to me, mine is sharp.
