It was probably because some others ‘bigger’ names had dropped out so they went to the back up list to fill the spots. The Met Gala and other big events invites go out sooo far in advance just to avoid what happened to Eugene. It’s also to insure all the ‘important’ people have enough to notice so they can plan ahead and to not double book the date if they actually want to go. People like Royalty, Politicians, The Elite, Top Business people and the most Celebrities have there most important scheduled appearances planned a year ahead usually. What’s more rude is having your invite for so long and dropping out so close to the event, but not close enough that it was clearly an emergency or last minute sickness. That just indicates you weren’t super keen on going but wanted to keep your place, thus stopping others from going, just so you can keep the option there incase you feel like it nearer the time. It’s bad etiquette and just shows your selfishness.
@TheSomeonewholoves
@TheSomeonewholoves 3 жыл бұрын
@@LadyLocket well in defense of a person who dropped the invitation. you never know what happened to them, maybe they fell sick, maybe someone in their family got sick, maybe they had an emergency. you can't judge someone being rude and selfish, without knowing what happened. besides i think many YT celebrities got a late invite, i think Jackie or Nikkie mentioned that their team made an incredible work considering the time restraint.

It seems like Jackie and Nikki were also at the table, but had more time to prep...or else they pulled off miracles if they also had short notice. Was really touching hearing about how seriously his immigrant mother took style and presentation. It really reminds me of a period of time I spent as a foreign exchange student in Nairobi. I lived with a middle class Nubian family in Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa. I was always struck by how sharp everyone dressed, even in a massive shanty town. When riding the bus home from downtown I realized you’d have know idea any of my fellow passengers lived in a slum. And don’t even get me started on Sundays with everyone in their church best! 🤩 My family explained how important it is for Kenyans to always put their best foot forward, regardless of your circumstances. Much love ❤️

Women with no shoes would still have bangles, rings, nose rings & gorgeously colourful sari & shawls, walking their cows, getting water from the well with giant pots atop their flowing headscarves, or yeah, even shovelling soil. I suppose Pakistan is more subdued with the colours & the cutting with mainly kurtas & baggy trousers.

I actually think it ended up being a good thing to see something "gender fluid" that was also more on the masc side. Similar to how people were a bit upset that Elliot Page didn't go bolder with his look, others commented that it was important for him to be able to step into a masc look and debut in that way. I think many of us are used to seeing Eugene in more femme/masc combos, and while this look could be critiqued as underwhelming, I don't think it was. It showed people how to experiment with style, that you can add small nods to your personal style in your nails, make-up, and hair. It gives people who are newer to fashion an access point into it. That experimenting with personal style can be small acts of revolution. Isn't that also a very Try Guys message? Just try! You may think this isn't your vision, or your end goals, but how can you still show yourself? I think it's great for younger audiences to see this! (Esp. if their school has dress codes or uniforms! You can still find a way to be yourself!)

An idea: the borrowed vintage designer suit was pretty much exactly what your mom would have given you because it was, well, designer and good looking but since it wasn't new and already worn it was affordable and into that base you build your own style and identity through the red accents in make up and shoes, the hair and the jewelry. Just what came to mind while watching the video

I won’t lie to you, I genuinely thought that it was an incredibly well thought out look of dominating masculinity locking away the feminine, gender-bending side of Eugene. I thought the symbolism in the necklace and the burst of red felt like a battle he was fighting to be set free. Male fashion has come such a long way from just the traditional black tuxedo to the past. My understanding of it was that the story he was trying to tell was one of conflict with accepting that he was not abiding by any gender norms, a fight with tradition and breaking free of that. I thought it was one of the most intelligent look on the carpet.

There's a HUGE story, and q very American one, in two gay men - virtually strangers - coming together in a moment of emergency to help one another. Esp when the demands and fulfillment of the elite took away your ease of opportunity and sense of security to begin with. Another gay man showed up for you, behind the scenes, with no one else the wiser, and fitted you with the armor you needed to go out and face the day. And not just face it but go claim what's rightfully yours to share and thrive in. It reminds me of the way that gay men and women came together in the underground during the AIDS crisis. No one else could be bothered, but they offered whatever they had, no questions asked, to help them move through this world with less shame, fear and loneliness. This embodied that spirit and was more valuable than your intended fashion.

right? I feel like this is common amongst immigants and poc. Everytime he metnions it, I always my grandfather (still alive - he's half german, half african american and immigrated from germany in the 50s/60s, so he had a lot against him) and how he had to both be tough (willing to physcially fight), but also work insanely hard to look good and intelligent to be deemed "respectiable" and combat sterotypes. Growing up he would tell us a lot about how we needed to look and act intelligent/etc because we are and to help us make it. Like it really hits and is super inspiring hearing how it's shaped him, and knowing he/others have gone through it too.

I recently read East of Eden by John Steinbeck and there's a line in the book where one of the characters is speaking to someone very wealthy and says, "One must be very rich to dress as badly as you do. The poor are forced to dress well." It reminded me of what Eugene talked about and as a first-generation Asian American born to immigrant parents, I can definitely relate. When you already have wealth and acclaimed status, you can get away with a lot more and people will still take you seriously. Whereas when you already feel out of place and foreign in your own country, there's so much pressure to always look perfect and presentable just to feel like you deserve a seat at the table. I'm glad he brought that up in the video and explained why fashion was so important to him and his identity growing up.

This was intense and educational. I never really realized how important fashion is in our society. My mom was similar to your mom in her approach to fashion and dressed me in expensive clothes as a child to portray a contrary image to what society expected of me as a child of a black single mom. It always annoyed me because I just wanted to dress like other kids, but I do remember my teachers always commenting on the quality of my clothing and that they treated me better and different than children with similar backgrounds. This video brought back some crazy memories from my upbringing and also emphasized the importance of my appearance and what I show the world in a way I haven't thought about in a long time. Thanks Eugene for sharing your experience. I saw you on the cream carpet and you looked amazing as always, in fact you were one of the best dressed there.

I hope Eugene can feel as proud of himself as everyone around him visibly was throughout this lovely vid, at least now that the fire has died down. The suit looked incredible and made the styling and nails (love the story! the symbolism!) pop and set a new standard for menswear on the carpet, queer or otherwise. Thanks for letting us behind the scenes and sharing some vulnerable moments. Wishing you rest, joy, (and maybe some therapy with a queer/Asian provider-- you deserve to feel this moment!)

why did you say folx if folks is already gender neutral 💀

@@loi5s You're right, however since many people use "folks" habitually but aren't actually open-minded about gender diversity, "folx" is used to signal that I am consciously including gender diversity in the term.

I love that when Eugene had trouble continuing the story, Alex stepped in to help keep it relaxed… having that atmosphere of talking to a friend about this huge thing that happened helped make it feel so real and personal and emotional. Next time, Eugene, you’ll have the perfect outfit and you’ll have the opportunity to really relax and enjoy yourself.

I love how you do still display your southern roots by using the word "y'all" ( a word I use far too many times during a day). You give us fellow Southerners a good look. A lot of people think that people from the South are uneducated hicks and you just destroy that stereotype so I applaud you, and also your bravery to be who you are. Thank you, Eugene; and keep being unapologetically fierce!

Actually, this whole story is pretty American! Getting an opportunity and doing everything you possibly can to make it is very the American dream. I know it's kind of cheesy but hopefully, it makes sense. Also, the look is killer! Note: I didn’t realize he made the same point in the video lol I wrote this midway through the video!

I'm so mad that Eugene, Jackie Aina, and Nikkie only had 6 days to prepare for the Met Gala. I know that if they had more time to prepare, the looks they would've had would been stunning. The things I would do to see them in full-on looks 😭. But they still look amazing. I always get so emotional when Eugene talks about representing his background and identity. He always uses his platform to lift up people from the communities he from. They better invite him back and let him shine

I still go back and watch your coming out video and it inspires me to be brave and tell my story. I want to cry thinking about how Eugene's mom made it a point to protect him and ensure he had respect through clothing. My immigrant mom is the same exact way and even though she can't offer me parental help in the traditional/ financial way, she always reminds me to look my best :,)

Eugene, you were stunning. I hope you can take this as a compliment: the final look in the tux reminds me so much of Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria, but with so much of the "I look f'ing amazing so don't f' with me," shield glaring through your accessories and makeup. It's not your dream look, but you owned it, and absolutely slayed as you walked up those stairs. Can't wait to see what you pull of in the years to come.

It would be incredible if you did a video with Roman, once he's back in the country, of a recreation of the look that you were actually going for. I'd love to hear the story-telling behind each piece and why, as a team, you chose that specific styling. I'm sure other Try Guys fans would be interested in watching it as well! Also, for being told you were invited to the Met Gala six days beforehand, Eugene you looked incredible. I want to say that your story and your intentions behind your vision resonated so deeply with me and I'm sure other AAPI's.
