I find that Super Metroid is similar to Dark Souls in that I really enjoy watching someone go into the game completely blind. It's very entertaining for me.

Super Metroid has some of the best game/level design I’ve ever seen in a game. I love seeing classic games like this and Donkey Kong Country on this channel! You don’t see lots of channels doing it.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I love watching people play Super for the first time. It's very intuitive once you get the hang of it, and the minimalist storytelling is very effective for 1994.

I've watched a lot of first playthroughs and the variation is always interesting. Some people get trapped for a while figuring out how to morph ball (because who reads the manual?). Some people try shooting one missile at a red door and give up (especially if they already played later games where one missile is normal). People who started with NES Metroid don't think to try shooting downward. Some people beat Bomb Torizo first try, but most don't. Some people take several bosses to understand that boss projectiles drop health. Surprisingly few strategize to bring as many missiles as possible to the fight. One thing that never changes is people getting creeped out by the hallway to the gold statue. Just an incredible bit of scenery in such simple pixel art and music. One thing I think this game does very poorly is communicate how damaging the weapons are. When you first get the missiles, if you haven't played the NES game they seem like they're just a tool for opening doors, even though they're 5x the damage per shot of the starting beam. Modern games would just tell you the damage values, even if that seems a little boring.

I always thought of the statue as the "aiming diagonally upward" tutorial boss, but you beat it without aiming diagonally upward.

I LOVE this game! The music, the mood/atmosphere, the gameplay, all fantastic and top notice for the time. I’m weirdly giddy about this one. Takes me back. Also… they set us up the bomb! Lol. ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.

Always an interesting sight to see someone try this classic for the first time. Torizo (the bird statue) is definitely the first big wake up call about dodging attacks and firing on weak spots.

So great to see younger generations discovering this true classic. I don't really play that many new games anymore, but I always seem to find time to spend with Super Metroid. Even though these days it's usually honing my speedrunning skills. Looking forward to watching the rest of your journey.

Ah the great gran of Metrovania games… or maybe great great great gran. I was mostly a pc gamer back in the day, but this game and several other classics from this era of gaming were some of my rare console faves. I was a lot better at them then, maybe I’ve caught too much old.

Yeah, this is the 3rd game in the series. 1st is Metroid and that has a remake called Metroid Zero Mission for the GBA, 2nd is Metroid Return of Samus and was remade as Samus Returns for the 3DS, which leads to this one. Fusion is 4th, Dread is 5th.

This is my oldest brother's favorite game. I remember watching him play it on the SNES when we were kids, and being super shocked to find out that Samus was a girl in her game over animation. But nowadays? She's bae. An absolute waifu if there ever was one.

I played this for the first time myself… gosh, 4 years ago? But I’d played most of the post-Symphony Castlevania games so I had a lot of preconceptions about how the genre worked. So there ended up being a ton of stuff that jumped out as “okay I get why this really launched the entire genre”, and I love the times it goes for pure atmosphere like the opening, but also the fact it’s the precursor to all these other games I’ve played really stood out. It’s definitely a lot rougher to navigate than its Castlevania counterparts and that sucked some of the fun out of it. Curious to see how you’ll feel about it considering you have a similar background with the genre!

haha. you should destroy the cannonballs that boss throw ya to refill missiles. and yet that was a good bossfight. i didn't know that torizo can be defeated that way.

"Please have mercy on me, I just started this game..." The game: _well, yes but actually no_ (but actually yes) I think I counted ... 7? deaths against the statue boss (and that's ignoring the one due to controller malfunction). Fun fact: despite the feature's association with F-Zero and other "3D" games on SNES, Super Metroid actually uses "Mode 7" on certain occasions: the title screen sequence (where it pans the "camera" around and then zooms out), the cinematics involving Samus's ship, and the escape sequence from Ceres station. From a technical perspective, all Mode 7 did was provide ONE layer with custom scaling and/or rotation -- said layer could contain anything from a full background scene to a single character sprite. Its association with the 3D effect of F-Zero (and friends) was specifically caused by changing the Mode 7 scaling parameter _while the system was still drawing the screen_ (like quickly moving an object in front of a rolling-shutter camera, where each row of pixels captures the photo at a slightly different moment in time). Carefully adjusting certain render parameters on a per-row basis (while the screen was being drawn) is also how they achieved certain mask/overlay type effects, like the searchlight that activated when you took the Morph Ball.

I’ve played this like 20 times, and MegaManX1-3… Zelda: link to the past, Secret of Mana and CHRONO TRIGGER was the greatest SNES game of all time!!! Stop running (you can’t run) and shoot that guy in the head with missiles. You can always come back when you have more health and more missiles.

I remember messing around with the original Metroid when I was like, 7 and playing on an older kid who lived next door's NES. Pretty much avoided Metroidvania entirely after that until Hollow Knight, which I freaking loved. Watching you stream this was fun but I think I'll leave it to the speedrunners. Even the people in chat who loved the game didn't make it sound appealing.

nice i'm so looking forward to this playthrough. i actually started playing this last week when i knew you was about done with it, i pretty much got everything in the game i just need one more item for Samus then i need to go through and clean out all the rooms making sure i get all the extras then onto the final fight. i am surprised how bad this Rom runs on the switch, i'm running a Rom as well on my Super Nintendo classic but it doesn't run nowhere near as bad as this one does, every time Samus gets hit she disappears on the screen even going down elevators she disappears and it doesn't do that at all on the version i have, i never actually had that happen once during my play time with the game, hopefully it gets better as your playthrough went along i know it has to suck especially getting hits during boss fights not being able to see your character anyway this game is just amazing i love the music and all exploration it has even though sometimes it can get pretty tedious it's still one of those games you will never forget and i hope you really enjoyed your time with this game as well

The disappearing Samus is a KZbin framerate issue, not a switch one.

@@infinite1up389 so that is a KZbin issue that's a good thing she didn't have to play the game like that, I've seen glitches in games before especially some of the older one's where a character would go invisible or disappear whenever they received damage but I didn't know this is was caused by KZbin and their framerates that's interesting to know. Thanks for the heads up on that otherwise I would have just assumed it was the game itself

Ohh yeah like Infinite said. To me I didn’t even realize Samus was disappearing because it looked normal on my screen. It’s because the framerate in the game doesn’t match the framerate in OBS.

@@bunnytails that's weird how that happens but yeah one of your other members pointed that out to me that it's a KZbin issue and not on your end, I've never seen it happen on KZbin but I have seen it happen playing games before especially digital games that are older one's

So I've never played any Metroid game and the closest to a Metroidvania style game I've played is recently picking up Nier: Automata (amazing game). Unless we count Super Smash Bros. I dont know much about Metroid. However the somewhat popular conception that she's a tall trans woman is known to me. I've heard one of the creators say she's trans but the transness of any Japanese video game character tends to be complicated and get pushback. So yeah I know pretty much nothing about Metroid and its an old enough classic that I probably wont actually play (I dont think any of them are on xbox) but probably should know more about. Looking forward to learning about the tall woman in power armor everyone fawns over.

Super Metroid is my favorite SNES game by far and that says a lot given that the SNES library is one of the best of any system. If you haven’t yet, you should at least watch Alien and Aliens while playing this series. They go together like waffles and syrup.

That first boss fight seems so hard at first but figuring out that the morph ball lets you roll under him and shooting his bombs gives energy and ammo makes the fight easy.

My favorite game of all time! :D Hmm, something is up with the refresh rate. A lot of your shots are invisible in this video. And when you get hit you disappear >_< Ah you got sort of unlucky on that first mini boss, in 2 ways: First, none of your shots hit any of those orbs he spits at you, and each of them drops pickups. Second, every time you tried to use the morph ball to dodge him, he used the claw attack, so you never noticed that when he's NOT doing the claw attack you can roll right by him without getting hit. So basically he gave you the impression that he's much harder than he really is :P You fought him the hard way! Good practice, though. It forced you to get good at jumping.

Kind of annoying how when Samus gets hit, she completely disappears instead of flickering like she's supposed to. Is that always the case on the Switch version? Something to do with the framerate?

It has to do with framerates unfortunately. It looks as it should for me but when recorded it does that.

yeah sprites do flicker alot on/off.. its an easy fix - record and upload @60 fps :-)

I get that your chat doesn't want to backseat game, but they can't even teach you the basic controls? You really need to experiment with the trigger/bumper buttons (usually at the top of the controller). It's pretty essential to know how to shoot diagonally up and down. Wait.. right after you finally win the Chozo fight you start using the diagonal up... ... .... .... ..did you not think that may have helped in the Chozo fight? lol bunny

no hell no that aint metroid 2 thats metroid 3 just lemme be clear metroid 1 = metroid nes/ metroid zero mission gba metroid 2 = metroid II gb/ AM2R windows game / metroid 3 = well that one only super metroid metroid 4 = metroid fusion gba metroid 5 = metroid dread switch
