I’ve been a mother/baby nurse for 7 months now and I always chart everything in the room. Saves time and less mistakes made. I get the most satisfied with baby baths obv and feeling a firm fundus haha. The worst days are when you’re working day 3/3 and exhausted with no motivation but have to put on a force smile the whole time because the unit is always happy.

Being an L&D nurse I’d advise you to chart everythinggggggg! Every time you talk to the doctor write a note in the pt’s EMR! Some things that seem insignificant may become very significant especially when it comes to preeclampsia occurring during the pp period!

I could never do l&d it's a scary thing having so much liability and charting so often on baby and mom...i guess in the Icu we have some drips that can be as frequent as q/5 to 15 min but seriously L&D is scary. Kudos do the nurses who save the day in the during a woman's most stressful day!

As a mom baby rn of 14 yrs I appreciate you being open and honest. People inside ans outside of the nursing world believe that MB is the happiest easiest nursing area...it's not. I've seen med surg, ICU and so many others come to MB and quickly leave. It is A LOT of work!!! And you have to wear multiple hats. I like that you encourage nurses to ask questions. But I would just add a caveat...be mindful of timing of those questions, consider the situation and environment, and remember to utilize the nursing team as you learn and grown in the specialty. Maybe even set aside a time with your preceptor where you can do a q&a session. As you are now able to see, your preceptor is finding a way to provide care & oversee your transition and to do so safely. Love your videos.

I am a former mom/baby nurse, now I am in the NICU. And the truth can be said with any new job. The first month on your own is the hardest. But, after that first month something clicks and it starts getting a lot better. Every new nurse I have given that bit of info too always comes back to tell me how true it is. So, hang on. You totally got this. And when you feel comfortable start charting what you can in real time (if you don't already). It will save you from having to stay late charting.

Im also a mom baby rn of 5 years, 3 years as a traveler. Im burnt out and some days I want to quit nursing all together but I've only worked one specialty. I was thinking I might try NICU. How do like it compared to mom baby? Mostly I just feel like I'm bothering mom's half the time, and having 6-8 patients to take GOOD care of it bothering me because it's seems like someone is always getting less attention.

I’m two months into mother baby and I only know ER! This has been the best and somewhat difficult two months all from the charting. It adds so much to the day but as I’m approaching my last few days of orientation it’s getting so much easier. I just have to write down everything and mark off for each patient or there is no way to remember every little thing! It’s been a major adjustment coming from ER, but I know it will all come together! I’m so excited that we are going through this journey together and that you are having a similar experience to me! I’m loving the videos and thank you for doing this.

As a former CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) in Family Medicine everything had to be charted in EMR when done from: Triaging, ht, WT, BP, CC, Meds/Vitamins, blood draw/labs, printing out Summary Visits, educated information, short procedures assisted in, injections are given (how much, Intramuscular/Subcute/Intraderm, side, type of injection or med given in office & when), Scripts, Rx, etc... As well as when other physicians were contacted regarding patient or scheduled. Even when preparing & assisting in GYN. ER for me is totally different as well...

Hiii there!😊 just gotta day I’m so excited for you and your new journey, and thank you for making this! I graduated nursing school Dec 2019, and I’ve been working on the MBU as a tech while I was in nursing school, and lets just say 2020 was rough and I had to take my nclex three times during 2020, and then I just took it a 4th time on 4/1/21 and found out I passed my nclex the next morning on 4/2/21! I totally understand how you feel because my coworkers def feel the same way, but I applied to my unit because it’s the specialty I’ve always wanted to do and I love it. I know I’ll have to learn so much more, but I am going to work my butt off because I am FINALLY a RN!!! These are good tips and I appreciated them, and I’m prepared for all of these things as I’ve been seeing on my MBU since I’ve been a tech! Because even as a tech it can be CRAZY because I used to have all the moms unless I have another tech with me so it would be insane with the tasks and vitals, but going from all the patients to couplets, I’m a little nervous but mostly excited!
