I gave up on using a phone for navigation on my first trip -- it overheated and shut down, leaving me without any navigation. It mystifies me why no one talks about this! Bought a dedicated Garmin.

I only had this issue when I had it in a clear case where it got no airflow, I use a charging quadlock mount now and have no issues.

Hay Neighbor ! what are you doing camping in my back yard ? LOL I've never been to Medicine lake yet... you beat me ! and I think that KTM 390 is a better bike for you ! it's good to see you up and putting around on the bike again after the Broken leg ! in fact I think your getting around better than I do ! GOOD FOR YOU !!!! we should meet up for a ride together some day.... like next summer as it's too cold for me now if I knew where you lived I'ed come visit you ! but alas i don't. we older codgers need to stick together as there are few of us left ! hang in there ! and stay out'a trouble !

Glad to see you’re out and about! The countryside you explore is so beautiful. Tip: there is empirical evidence to prove that the vibration from motorcycle handlebars destroy cellphones. I have removed my cellphone brackets from my bikes and bought a Garmin Zumo XT motorcycle GPS instead. Additionally, I also have an Inmarsat satellite phone just in case I ever find myself out of cellphone range. Greetings from Sacramento. 😊 Edit: Since you’re also an aficionado of old school methods, be sure to include a compass in your kit.

Yes manufactures warn against mounting their phone to anything like bike bars. Normally the first thing to be destroyed are the cameras in the phone.

Hi Bruce, I really enjoy your adventures, I am nearly 60 and like your style...would like to ask or comment on the fact cell phones are somewhat unreliable..I realize you have SAT backup but have you considered Amateur Radio-as a 2 meter handheld transceiver with an enhanced antenna could be useful utilizing a network of repeaters to enhance range from 30-100 miles to even trans continental -they also tune NOAA weather too and sometimes is just fun to chat with others on the frequency-not really like CB-much more organized and civil ... requires passing a Technician level exam but is not hard to do..I always take one into the back country, camping etc.. just fruit for thought.. stay safe and enjoy your new bike!

I have a Kawasaki klx 300sm set up for adventure. Use the same tusk tank bag and going to go this week moto camping if I can find somewhere. The east coast sucks for dispersed camping. Going to have to do some stealth moto camping. 😮 Going to put it up on KZbin when I get it done.

My wife and I were at medicine lake in September. Didn’t camp there but hiked over to the lava flow on the same trail you took. Also declined to climb the flow (I had an ankle and knee replaced in 2021 - looked like way to much for me to climb :}. Thanks for the drone shots showing what is up there!

Love the sound of your new bike. I have a Super Duke R 16 I've wearing my backpack on my chest lately because of my tent and pad behind. Looks strange but is convenient for water hose and getting anything out for gas or glasses. Doesn't effect riding . Kinda hassle to put on ,but I like it so far . Thanks for the back up phone tip . Going to check in to that.

Great vid buddy. I stayed at Medicine Lake coming back from Amanda's Rocky Mountain Roll in Montana last August. Great camping but fuel getting there was a challenge, as you mentioned. I'll spend some more time in the area blending it with some more stuff I want to ride in Southern Oregon. Keep up the great content. Like you, I'm a solo senior rider so you content is very relevant to me...

Thanks Bruce, Love your videos.. So glad to see you back riding again. After you purchased your KTM 390 adventure I ended up trading my 2021 CB500X for a 2023 KTM adventure and look forward to riding it. I too am getting older and I found the CB500X to be top-heavy. The KTM 390 has a much lower centre of gravity and is also 60 pounds lighter. 👍🏻👍🏻
@MySeniorMoments
@MySeniorMoments Жыл бұрын
I considered the CB500X, but like you noticed, it is a bit top-heavy and at 439 pounds, almost the weight of the Tenere 700 that I recently sold. It is also more of a road-oriented adventure bike.

I'm with you on my navigation system. I have an old and new phone both loaded with the maps of where I am going. A paper map usually and an Inreach device. I keep my good phone in my coat pocket as back up for mapping and use my old phone on my quad lock with the vibration dampener.

I looked at the 390 and it was too high. I want to check out the new Triumph 400 scrambled. I’m 74, I was completely healthy until a few months ago. I had surgery but my right leg and foot makes mounting my bikes difficult, I’m maybe 80% now. I have a BMW 1200GS and Husqvarna 701 but I’d be more comfortable on a smaller, lighter bike. I’m still looking.
@MySeniorMoments

I believe KTM has a lowering kit available that includes a smaller rear spring. Not too awfully expensive either. It can be difficult to mount at stock height. However, it's a great bike for us older adventurers.

When your phone loses signal, it continuously sends out a ping. This accelerates the draining of the battery. Maybe your battery was just deeply discharged. I have a Garmin Zumo XT GPS which is hard wired. Pretty good unit.

I've watched a couple of your videos (now subscribed) respect to you fella, you're the vision I had of myself until a couple of years ago. I'm 61 years young so a spring chicken in comparison 🙂 Been riding bikes since I was 15, unfortunately being from across the pond, riding was limited to hard top with the occasional jaunt over to mainland Europe but I did get the chance to quit work at 47 and ride around the world for 3 and a half years .. 57 countries and 80+K miles, a lot of it off hard top. Retired to my house in France after the trip and got a few jollies in to Eastern Europe, Ireland and the North of Scotland. (Off topic now but relevant to my first sentence) .... Then 2019 hit!!! Locked up in my house and forced to take a faux "vaccination" to have basic freedoms, which I have to say I agreed with at the start. After the 2nd and then 3rd coerced poisonings I, a formerly fit and healthy ex Serviceman with no medical history developed heart problems which have all but put a stop to any "adventurous" motorcycling activity and curtailed my day to day life. Channels like yours keep the dream alive, keep doing what you do .... thanks

You may not have gotten the shots you wanted from your GP, but what you got gives a pretty good sense of the views and environment you enjoyed. I'm far away now but from SW BC in my younger years. I like that Oregon/N California area. Thanks for sharing. Just wondering, in a word, you mention feeling a little cramped on the 390, how would you compare just that to the 411? Cheers.

I had mentioned in a previous video that I sold my T7 and purchased a 390 as well, curious, do you travel with extra tubes and tools to change a flat? Personally I've never changed a flat on a motorcycle. I do have AAA though, not that they would be much help other than tow me away.
@MySeniorMoments
@MySeniorMoments Жыл бұрын
Yes I carry a spare tube (only the front that can also be used in the smaller rear tire). I also carry a jack, air compressor, and tire spoons plus a can of slime as a first resort. It is not fun to change in the field. If I was close to civilization, I would have the bike towed to a repair shop rather that change the tire in the field.
