I think part of the fun is buying a kit and building it. Just but a qcx mini, build that for practice, then build the qmx. I've built a bunch of qrp labs stuff and I can only tell you it isn't hard, just read the instructions then start building.

@@thedoobie1I have some very high-end JBC soldering stations, and reflow equipment. I also have an AmScope microscope that aids in the build of stuff like this. For me it’s not “hard”, but it is definitely a build more a more experienced builder. It’s worth a go though. It’s a more advanced build, but the instructions are very clearly laid out. And for the price, it’s a great learning experience.

for powering my QDX, I just use a USB-C PD to barrel connector 12v cable and as long as your USB-C power source (battery, charger, etc) supports 12v PD you are good to go. Easy to charge and can be used to also power your cell phone, laptop, etc.

That's what I use for my X6100 and my USB-PD powered Mini-PC. I have a Ugreen 90Wh powerbank with dual USB-PD ports that can run a both ports simultaneously at 100W & 45W, which is more than enough for my rig and my PC. It is about the rough equivalent of a 6.5-7Ah battery and can be charge using a regular USB-PD charger, which can be valuable when on the go.... like during the commute between parks 😉

I bought one of those too but the battery I was going to hook it up to kept turning off. I guess there wasn't enough of a current draw for it to stay on when the radio was in RX. I do like the smaller form factor of the LiPo pack, and I got to build another battery!

When doing POTA, always get more than the minimum number of contacts! I will say that WSTJ-X somewhat limits your ability to incorrectly copy a callsign, but I've had it happen once or twice on SSB and been saved by those one or two extra contacts I got as a buffer. If you miscounted though, those one or two could also save you. I've got a CaHR Ares (9:1) antenna, but think I want to get the Apollo (49:1) and make it a linked EFHW like this. I also have a linked dipole for 10, 20, and 40 I made using a K6ARK 100w kit. Super compact. If I could get my hands on another one of those kits, I'd probably use that instead.

I have the QDX already which is tiny and I ordered one of these a few months ago. They do take a quite a while to arrive if you order a built kit (4 to 6 months) but if you compare them against eg USDX they are way better and about the same price. In all it’s worth waiting for!

This radio pairs very well with the KM6LYW digipi. It works natively, I think you have to set the radio as a specific Kenwood model listen in the QMX instructions. Glad to look if someone replies asking. Fun way to have everything in a tiny kit and not need your laptop. I know the screen is too small for Mike’s taste based on his FT8CN comment, but you can also use a tablet with it. The USB port on Talentcell YB1203000-USB powers a Pi Zero W2 nicely while also powering QMX/QMX+ on 12V.

Nope. Just cut for the bands you want and link them all together. In my case I cut the first wire for 17 meters. Then added a link for 20, then 30 and then the rest of the wire after 30 gets you 40. If they are all linked you'll get 40, 20, 15, & 10, but when I want 17 or 30 I can just unplug the link and I'm resonant again. At the end of the day, it's just a 40 meter EFHW with links cut for the other bands.

Just use a buck converter set to 11.9 volts. That's what I do with my QMX, & it works fine. About the EFHW, are you hiking some distance to get to your location, making it necessary to limit the weight of your carry pouch so you don't bring a tiny tuner? I get that, I once walked a ways to the top of Mt. Davis, PA. BUT IF YOU'RE DRIVING TO YOUR LOCATIONS, WHY ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT A FEW MORE OUNCES FOR A TUNER? Ditching the devotion to half wave antennas was the smartest thing I've done in over 50+ years as a ham. For portable ops I now use either a 53 or 82 foot wire along with a hand sized auto tuner to work 80-6 meters (dependingon which radio I pull from the suv). No fussing with jumpers in the air; I just work whatever band & mode I want without getting up. Piece of cake, and easier to use than a HW. Whether
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 2 ай бұрын
I did use a buck converter when I first got it, but why would I want to carry another piece of gear if I could just make a battery for this radio? Much more convenient. As far as the antenna is concerned, I'm not into tuners. They can fail, you can forget a jumper coax, the battery could die, etc. etc. etc. Any problem with a tuner means you're most likely not getting on the air. With the linked EFHW's I make, they're already resonant on 40, 20, 15, and 10. Adding links for the other bands makes them more versatile, while never having to rely on a piece of equipment to make my radio happy. That's how I roll.
