The beginning was priceless hahaha. I thought you've seen a snake or something at first 😅😅😅 The toroid is small indeed. I tried that too and a friend of mine tested it and was heating as well. Now I increased the size to a 140-43 that I put in a nice enclosure made from PVC pipe material. I will test it on the (tr)uSDX and hopefully there will be no more issues. Glad you made a QSO at least. 73 and have an amazing and productive week.

I love my (tr)u SDX. I received it a few weeks ago. A first I was skeptical the receive wasn’t very good but finally had one station responded back. I connected a small end fed antenna Saturday and to my surprise, signals reception improved. Every POTA station I attempted to make contact with replied back with RST’s of 43 to 54 SSB and one CW contact 559. I am a believer. Thank you for a grant little radio. 73 de Roger W8RLP

With such a short coax you need a counterpoise for the EFHW to get more efficiency from your antenna. So, either use a longer coax cable (a few meters) or ad a counterpoise of at least 0.05 lambda. In my experience and testing, having both a longer cable (than what you had connected to the (tr)uSDX) and counterpoise lowers the SWR additionally. Try those options the next time you are doing portable. Anyways, great video.

I know. I commented the same under K6ARK´s Video. I did it anyway wrong, as I wanted to know if it works. I have a good EFHW (Homebrew) here, waiting for the next Video. Better showing this time than the first one, for sure. The new battery pack & radio bottom are really nice. I'll have to see if I can finagle one of those from my 3D printing friends ;-) Pretty neat QSO with Italy. (Piero Begali now has his own (tr)uSDX . . . Maybe you can catch him on the air some day.) Also your previous comments about being out in nature are right on. I'd be out there in the woods right now but I have to wait another two weeks until I can test negative for the plague. And then my doctor wants to bother me with more tests. Thanks for the excellent video. Stay safe & well, my friend. 73 de W8IJN

Fantastic set-up you have there. For fine antenna support string it is also worth checking out 100lb braided fishing line (cheap as chips & you can get it in inconspicuous green). Be careful with the hot core, they quickly go non-linear & your harmonics can shoot way up (there is a youtube video quantifying this problem... unexpectedly into FCC spectral fail territory with little warning).
@dl2man
@dl2man Жыл бұрын
I´ve heard about that video, but the premise alone is false. It´s not a part of the Antenna, that heats up and creates harmonics ! If that happens, your transceiver had a harmonic suppression issue in the first place.
@StreakyP
@StreakyP Жыл бұрын
@@dl2man are you sure that is right. Your TX can be "as clean as a whistle" but if the non-linearities occur after the TX lpf you can still get harmonics and spurii radiated. The "rusty bolt effect" is a classic example of this. Things would be very easy to verify (even without a calibrated spectrum analyser).. simply tx a straight CW carrier which should be a pure sine wave and stick an oscilloscopes probe on the base of the antenna (ok with a voltage divider to get the voltage into the range of the scope).. if the saturation and non-linearity show any "flat topping" or other distortion away from the pure sine wave it shows that there are harmonics there an they are being radiated

The fruit looks like a raspberry… about your battery holder, it’s pretty interesting and practical. I’ll do mine for a 3 cell 14500 battery pack, but 4 cell also works, and the advantage of 14500 is that you can use normal AA batteries with 4 cell for something similar to feed the rig with 5v

I´m not into SSB so much, but it would be interesting for sure. The benefit of CW however is, that I could make that contact under those bad conditions, which was not possible on SSB. It´s a matter of energy density: While my 3W of CW are foused on one point (like a laser) SSB is seperating those 3W on 2,4Khz Bandwidth. So before that can happen, I need to build a portable ANtenna without those losses, to get out the full 3W. 73 Manuel; DL2MAN

As far as I admire CW, I didn't manage to learn it yet, so I'm still confined to the SSB parts of the bands. And I can tell you, (tr)uSDX is a blessing even for SSB. Last time I managed to score some nice QSOs to a few different European countries when I was on a business trip in Switzerland and had two hours of time and a meadow with a tree in the middle of it, not far from my hotel. And of course my trusty (tr)uSDX and a few meters of thin enameled wire and unun. I faced the same problems as Manuel in this video, I couldn't hang the antenna high enough and I had no counterweight, but I still managed to make some nice SSB QSOs.
