Just wanted to say that I was watching this video and my 4 year old sister saw you and commented "She doesn't have a leg?" and when I explained she just went like "ah alright". Kids are so sweet when they're curious in a completely non-judgemental way.

She did one video about how some of her videos were taken down because someone complained that her videos would be traumatic to kids. She managed to get them back up when people overwhelmingly said that was not the case. You've just proved it again with your comment. Kids have no expectations. They are curious, and when you answer their questions, they move on.

I once had a 4-year old German girl find my leg when I was swimming, She took it to her dad so he could find who it belonged too and give it back before they fell over. Very sweet child, and though her dad was hugely embarrassed he translated my explanation into German. At the end she patted me on the head and said something that made her father laugh. I asked what she said and he translated it as, "You poor man. You don't have as leg and you can't talk." Makes me wonder what a very young person thinks then they encounter someone speaking a different language for the first time. Here they are, just getting the hang of this talking thing and suddenly they go some place where everyone seems to be talking, but you can't understand it any more. My mother, who was white but spoke Spanish fluently encounter a little girl who just stared at her in astonishment. She told my mother, "Your face speaks English but your mouth speaks Spanish." I(t just blew he mind that a white person could speak Spanish.

My daughter was a Shriner’s patient from 1 to 18 - her “collection” of legs grew over the years until she decided it was time to part with them. Lol at one point, she seriously thought about making one of her legs into a lamp, just like The Christmas Story 😂

My stump shank a bit after amputation, but it grew bigger over the next 17 or so year. My sump grew by several inches after amputation. That can happen if your leg is amputated then you are just 3 years old. FYI, if you gain or lose weight, this too will change your stump size. So keep yourself fit.

Whenever I see a wound, I get this pulling sensation at the lower end of my spine. It's like someone punched me in the stomach and now I'm reeling, but without the pain. I also used to have that sensation with amputated limbs(most of the time. Herr Zimmer, my physics teacher in high school, was the exception, I was too busy dodging chalk and being an ass teen to feel much wound empathy) But this is now the first time I've genuinely felt nothing, it's just Jo talking about the nubbin, nothing to see here The magic of exposure and representation is truly powerful

Does that get more and more painful to walk on? I can’t imagine two chopstick bones surrounded by skin feels very good lol

with a lower leg amputation you will always have pressure points for the bones but as long as the operation went well the bones shouldn't be very sharp (if they end up being sharp you can have to have another surgery to dull them). Even with atrophy you should still have some muscles tissue (the muscles are folded around your bones) between the skin and bones, muscles mass loss is because of cells shrinking, muscle cells don't actually ever fully disappear. I'm not an amputee myself but I imagine the feeling of putting pressure on the stump does change over time, but not sure what that'd feel like exactly.

So the first prosthetic was made somewhere around Persia I can't remember his name but he was locked in one of those blocks that they put your feet in to keep you from escaping he only had one foot in and he cut it off and since at the time there was no way to reattach a limb he ended up carving a new foot from wood

it's kinda trippy whenever the shot allows us to see your legs in a way that lets us see how different they are because said difference is only getting more noticeable

I use my below knee leg to keep the cat food bag folded over and closed. But sans the foot case. I swapped it onto my above knee leg because the original one was making squishing sounds. My leg has shrunk a lot. I go to my tech in a few weeks. We need to shorten the leg and add tons of pads to fill in the gap. Right now it spins around as I walk. I've gotten small enough that I can wear the liner from my BK at night so I don't swell any larger.

But like, if your calf muscle got wrapped over the bones to give your bones patting, wouldn't it mean that you're slowly loosing the muscle you need to use a prosthetic?
@emilysmith2965
@emilysmith2965 Жыл бұрын
She actually talks about her prosthetic in some other videos and hers attaches by suction. It is really important to have a knee for prosthetic movement (above-knee amputees’ options are way more computerized and expensive), but you don’t necessarily need a calf depending on the setup.
@walterl322
@walterl322 Жыл бұрын
@@emilysmith2965 I mean it attaches with suction, but the bones need padding to not damage the tissue between the bones and the prosthetic... tho I guess she could simply use more silicone padding and there are probably specific prosthetics for people who have lost most of their muscle mass in that part of their leg... (Also, in my original comment I wrote patting instead of padding and that's kinda embarrassing)

Hey Jo, I love your videos but I really need complete captions and so do a bunch of other people. I know as a creator you get a lot of bs and that is not what I'm trying to do. I ask that you increase accessibility via captions.

‘Cause… it is pretty cool. Most creatures can’t survive losing a limb, but humans can! Plus we get learn about how the body responds over time… that IS cool! And of course, having someone be so willing to share their experiences, and also teach about the amputee community more generally, is cool. 😎

Off subject, I know, but what brand are your boots? I’ve been wanting to get a nice pair of boots like that and really love the white. They are so sharp and just the right mix of bada** plus feminine which is my total aesthetic. (Oh I’m sorry are you missing a leg? I was too caught up in that incredible boot 😂)

The calf muscle requires use all the way down to the foot. Without a foot, you just can’t engage the entire muscle. You’re just bound to lose muscle mass.
@feedayeen
@feedayeen Жыл бұрын
Muscles exert tension forces with connections to 2 different bones using tendons. In general, the muscle closest to your torso controls the bone system farther out. So your calf controls your foot's stability and your thigh controls your lower leg and the butt for the upper leg. Same thing happens with arms. Hands and feet do something similar except the muscles are farther away due to space and you just have super long tendons.

Honestly this just makes me more upset that prosthetics can be so expensive. Not only do you have the load of bearing this change to your body, but you're going to have to pay a good amount of money every few years to adapt to even more changes. I hope more work can be done in order to change this and make them more accessible.

Side note: are those by chance.... Thermal leggings??? **Emits squeal of delight at the possibility** They look fleeced inside where you have it rolled up... Are they fleecy??? lol please share the brand if sooooo! I NEED fleecy leggings in my life, been looking online, amazon, but, the reviews are so mixed and everything about shopping on that platform feels wrong everytime, plus tired of "taking a chance" everytime I buy something, so far it's like 50/50.... That's unsatisfactory IMO. Too bad we lost all the local shops buuuut, that's a rant for another day.... Anyone have a lead on quality made brand that doesn't fall apart in 5 washes or, go all baggy at the knees in or bum after a half day of wearing? bc the fabric bias was cut wrong or whatever else, please, help a girl ooooout! It's winter and I need cozy pants. Haha Serious question tho, Jo if you're reading this, but is there some kind of training, idk, but like with a resistance band maybe that would work to keep that calf muscle from total atrophy? Tho considering all the physical activities you do now for hobbies and exercise, hiking etc. I guess not or that much movement would likely already do so. Huh, I probably answered my own question there.
